I saw the comments about some of the weekly check in groups being quiet, and I saw in another month group they were doing group wide GTKY posts, so I thought this might be fun? Maybe not on Weds b/c of HDBD but I felt like getting the ball rolling
Who has any? How many? Planning on more?
What do you have? Meaning behind it?
If you don't have one, what would you get if you got one?
Me, I have three. I keep saying I want another one, but have yet to pull the trigger.
Sun and Moon, lower back - oh yea, I was THAT girl in 2004. I wanted a nose ring, my parents freaked and said no, but let me get a tattoo (b/c you know logic?!) at 17, I just wanted something pretty. At almost 32 i don't regret it, it's in great shape and since low rise jeans have since become a thing of the past it barely gets seen, I honestly kinda forget about it. I have my zodiac (Leo) on the inside of my left wrist. And a prayer that takes up basically my entire right rib cage (the most painful tattoo I have), not a super religious person, but grew up with it being said often in my family.
I have one, though I've very often thought about getting more.
My mom reads rune cards (which are similar to Tarot) so when I was 21 I got a rune symbol called Dagaz on my upper back. It's a little stylized but essentially this:
It's all about cycles, and progress. Though it often gets mistaken for a wonky infinity symbol.
@anniemarie887 - Great idea! I have a very similar first tattoo and story which is kinda crazy!
My mom was a bit of an 80's rocker chic and we have always been best friends not just mom/daughter. So my 16th birthday present from her was my first tattoo. The idea was a balanced universe to keep me balanced through life. It's a half moon, the sun, stars and sweeping lights. I still love it more than any other gift I've ever been given and it's on my right foot.
I got my second tattoo when I was 19 on my wrist and inner lower forearm. It's a purple filigree cross I got around the same time I got baptized.
I always want a new tattoo but being a grown adult means there was always something more important to spend my money on lol. Neither of mine hurt too bad but I was also a teenager with both and my skin had a lot more elasticity. I hear it gets more and more painful as you age. I do plan on getting a tattoo for my daughter sometime after she is born and I'm done breastfeeding. But I have no idea what or where it will be yet.
Two: one on my back, one on my ankle. The one on my back is a dove with an olive branch in its beak--I started thinking about it in high school, originally just a symbol for peace (I was a bit of a hippie as a teenager), but got it at 24 to also symbolize hope, kind of like how the dove returned to Noah with the branch after the flood, giving him hope (22-24 was a rough period)...so it was kind of a reminder that God's got my back. Literally.
Second on my ankle also has religious connotations, got it at age 27. It's a sun, but it's my personal symbol for "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Got a sun to symbolize it because sun is a play on the word Son (Jesus), who is "The word made flesh" (and now in my flesh), and it's on my foot because He's guiding my path. And the sun is the brightest form of light on Earth for us.
I've toyed with the idea of getting an anchor for a couple reasons--my husband is Navy, but there's also that "hope is the anchor for the soul" verse. But, haven't made a decision. Not sure where I'd put it, and honestly, it hasn't been as pressing in my mind as other two were. Maybe in a couple years, but it's not high priority right now.
I don't have any, but I love hearing stories behind peoples tattoos. I almost got one in college but never pulled the trigger... instead I got my nose pierced which came out shortly after because my body rejected it.
I've thought about getting one symbolizing the kids after this one is born, I have a few ideas but nothing I'm super in love with yet.
I don't have any tattoos but I plan on getting a tattoo on my 40th birthday- a bouquet of flowers with each representing the birth month flower for myself, my husband and my children including the two I lost.
• I have two. I got my first at 17 and when my parents found out my mother threatened to call the police on the studio and my dad called me white trash 😂
• The first is a flower on my right hip bone. My second it on the side of my foot and says just breathe. Honestly they weren’t well thought out. They’re not horrible and I do want more but would like to get these covered or incorporated into something else first.
@k_mama91 i need to know, did the studio check id or you just used someone else's? i may have been ornery and got a piercing using someone else's id before i was 18.
@anniemarie887 I may have gone to a studio known for being lax on checking IDs.. and it may or may not have been the first instance where I participated in underage activities by purposely seeking out places that slacked on abiding the law.
@anniemarie887@k_mama91 You guys are rebels, lol. I begged my mom to let me get a tattoo when I turned 18, she said no, and if she ever found out I did, she'd cut me off their health insurance. It kept me scared enough to hold off for a few years.
So basically the week I finally got off theirs and onto my own, I scheduled my tattoo appointment. She was less than thrilled.
I don't have any but eventually will. I've always had a friend henna a tattoo on me to see if I would still like it after it faded but still have 0 tattoos. I want to get one to represent my son, our 25 month breastfeeding relationship, and this baby but of course I've got to wait to see who this baby is (Team Green) lol
I do love looking at other people's tattoos and hearing the stories behind them. I always find it fascinating what a "simple" symbol can mean to so many different people.
@rjgmcmanus the nose ring my parents wouldn't let me get at 17... yea i did it within like 24 hrs of turning 18. at some point in the next 6ish months my mom paid me to take it out (bribery man, makes the world go round) but then i went and redid it at like 21. my kid will either be able to get nothing by me like @k_mama91 said, or like 10x wilder than me. i feel like i'm owed some payback - although i never got in trouble. i always managed to just toe the line.
My parents were also thrilled with my nose ring. Lucky for them ds kept grabbing at it so that phase was short lived. @anniemarie887 Payback comes at different times, don’t be surprised if your sweet 8 year old wakes up with a smart mouth one day. I wasn’t expecting my karma for another several years but here I am, looking at a shrunken version of my teenaged self.
Omg this thread is so fun to read. I have 4! I have a tiny keyhole on the back of my neck (it’s adorable but I regret it sometimes). I also have a verse going vertical down my spine in my own calligraphy. Then, two which I love the most, are a sea turtle that I got in Australia to remind me of our time there and esp of the times we were in the ocean and fell in love....and then my Harry Potter tattoo!
I never did a tattoo- I was never sure what I’d want to have on my body permanently when I was younger. My husband has a tattoo with a special memorial story for an abortion he went through with a very unstable, drug addicted ex-girlfriend when he was young. He’s an artist, so he designed his own- it looks like a tear, but stylistically drawn. Since we’ve had our daughter, he’s wanted to redo the tattoo and convert it to something in her honor.
I tried for a or a belly button piercing in college, but my body never healed around it and now I just have a stupid scar 😛. I’d like to do a tattoo if my husband could design me something amazing- maybe a yoga or Hawaiian theme?
I have one. A heart with an ancient symbol for strength imposed over it. Grayscale. It needs to be touched up. It’s high on my right ankle. I got it when I left my first husband (jackass).
I have another bigger piece planned but haven’t done it yet. It’s two butterflies the body of each are a different awareness ribbon. One is green (CP for my niece) and one is pink and blue (infant loss for my other niece and our two losses).
Like this but the second in pink and blue (and no border)
No tattoos for me. I've considered it in the past, but looking back on some of the design ideas I had, I'm glad I didn't go through with any of them. I like tattoos, though. If I got something it would probably be really tiny and on the inside of my wrist.
I don't have any. If I got one it would be a Roman numeral. I have a lot of siblings and a few have gotten thier birth order number in Roman numerals. I think I'll eventually get mine since my number will coincide with the number of children I will have, but we'll see.
I have 1 - Flounder from the Little Mermaid saying Part of Your World. Originally wanted Sebastian but decided having a crab tattoo would leave an innuendo. 😂
i might get another with my sister but nothing in stone.
I love everyones tattoos and the stories behind them.
I only have one, I hate it and I am so glad that I got it ibelow my underwear line (which my hubby makes fun of me because apparently I must have had to have my pants pulled pretty low for it. But it is a crown (for my sorority @anniemarie887 I am that girl lol) and I dont regret it, since you cant see if I dont even really care.
I would like another, I would like this (pic below) for my boys and the 3 miscarriages I have suffered.
i love this discussion. My husband and I are Tattoo junkies and I always love seeing others and hearing stories. Obviously from my first photo I got quiet a few, and some not showing on my feet and hips. Even tho they all have a particular story I'll just share my favorites! I have gotten many of the course of different points on my life and a lot from the military. So first in my collage is my underwater anchor girl, I was in the Marines and my brother is in the Navy and we both did boat deployments(just never together) he has a male version of the same thing and it's our way of saying we will be connected across any seas. My next one is snowflakes on my lower arm with my first daughter's name, hailee Rhea. She was born in December and at the time I thought my only child. My sunflower is my newest for my second daughter Lillian Marie. Already at a young age she is a wild free spirit, stubborn and aggressive. And the owls represent my husband and I. Some say it's bad luck to get matching but I know I will be with the man forever. Til death do us part. The owls are a little goofy to represent how our relationship works. We both are alpha personalities but softies with each other. I plan to keep adding as I have a lot of skin, yet none planned at the moment. Since some added piercings in here... I used to have my belly, nose and a 4 point trident through my ear when I was younger. Being almost thirty I have slowly taken them all out and got away from that phase in my life. No judgement on anyone else, just doesn't tickle my fancy anymore. I love the unique art of tattoos though and how they have been evolving!
@klmcguire well now i wanna know what sorority you were in? haha, i could've done the same - althought a kite or a pansy flower aren't really the coolest tattoos.
@lilyrheas your tattoos are AMAZING. i love the forest and owls! i also had some piercings, the only ones i keep up with are the handful in my ears. the hole from my belly button has never closed and its starting to look a little off as things are stretching!
Thanks ladies!! I always get crazy questions about pain and how i will feel as I age and this and that but at the end of the day I do love it. They all have good meanings even if life has changed from the time I got them. A scrapbook of growth and life.
@klmcguire I love the simplicity of the tattoo photo you posted. It has a beautiful meaning and the placement would be really elegant.
..... To many to count... 🙂 my important ones. My kids initials ZAC and MAC on my wrist yes my oldest is Zac my other son is Max I made their initials spell there names almost. My first tattoo of a butterfly lower back.. was apart of that underage early 2000’s trend.. Yosemite Sam On the back of my arm above my elbow for my dad it was his first tattoo and my way of knowing he’s always got my back. An arrow for my sign Sagittarius down my wrist which my left arm is a half sleeve of Mandela’s, death moths and vines and flowers. I have a stormy umbrella which has a meaning of family protector. Seashells because we love the ocean and protecting it. And my latest is matching wedding bands with my husband it is a tiny wave with a snowflake under it. Because he’s from the ocean and I’m from the north and I have been his snowflake forever. And a whole mess on non meaning and tiny meaning tattoos. 😊 excited to add our newest son Archer’s next!
I have 3, first is a crown on my ankle, my sorority symbol. Then I have a cross on one hip and a butterfly on the other. My parents only know about the crown one, to this day I still hide the other two from them. My older sister only saw them when she was in the delivery room with me when DS1 was born.
I was more into piercings when I was younger, and like others may or may not have sought out places very relaxed with checking ID’s.
Thanks for sharing all these amazing tattoos and stories!!
I don't have any but have thought of getting pretty much the same thing for about ten years. I'd like a line drawing of an iris with some ivy with the Latin phrase "flourishing in sun and shade" - it's a family motto from my mom's side of the family that a cousin of mine already has. We talked about all the cousins getting it at one point but no one else has. The line drawings of the plants represent family members and also my love of flowers/nature. Id like to get it probably on my ribcage.
I don't have any piercings other than my ears but I did in a rebellious teenage phase pierce the web of my tongue (no, it didn't hurt) and had that for about a year and a half.
I *love* your tattoos and especially the stories and meanings behind them! Beautiful! (Seriously. I should tag every single one of you!)
I don't have any, but I have wanted the same tattoo, for the same reason, since I was 15. I always told myself that if I still wanted it when I was 30, I could get it. I turned 30 this past February, started making loose plans to travel to see my best friend (who has several tattoos already) so we could get one together, and lo and behold, in March I find out I'm pregnant! So I am still planning on getting my tattoo, it'll just have to be when it's safe to do so, lol.
I'd like to get a chambered nautilus shell tattoo, likely on the inside of my wrist (though I keep toying with the idea of where to get it). It's for my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails, since I've loved them literally my whole life, and it's the same imagery as is used for my favorite album. Plus I just love the symbolism of a chambered nautilus, and love the poem of the same name by Oliver Wendell Holmes.
I have a bass clef on my back, I was trained as a professional classical/ orchestral bass player and got a major in it and everything but I don't play any more and no I don't miss it. It was right for me at the time, now it's not. I am too much of a wimp to get another one. That one hurt a lot.
Husband is a tattoo junkie I honestly don't know how many he has total but no more these days, too expensive.
@ale9687 I saw your comment and made the assumption you were!! I like my tatto, just would have placed it in a better place had I been a little more wise haha
