I don't think screen time is the end of the world. Most days it's the only break I get, and even then it's only for 10ish minutes. I guess the other part of this UO is that I can't wait until DS is old enough to be entertained by a TV show or movie for an extended period of time. Or is that a FFFC?
this stems from a recent encounter with new parents. I cannot STAND people who are militant about hand sanitizer. build up some immunity ffs. obviously cleanliness is important, but making me pump some sanitizer EVERY time I hold your kid during the night? nope.
@chichiphin I can only understand militancy with absolute newborns or immune compromised infants. Mostly because I have close friends who's otherwise healthy newborns contracted RSV and meningitis (enterovirus) in the first few days of life. Otherwise, I'm 100000% in agreement with you. I don't think we even have hand sanitizer in our house...
I don’t think the list of things pregnant women should avoid is that hard to follow. Do I miss some things a bit, sure, but I’d much rather protect my unborn baby and it’s just for a short time. My judgement isn’t on women who’ve done research and decided that they don’t think something is a risk it’s more for women who are just like I don’t care I need to have it...

@stassischroeder Yes!! I also think that a kid sitting and watching a show isn’t a bad thing. They are paying attention and following a story! DD watching TV is a legit lifesaver for me some days and is the only reason Dinner is made or the laundry is done. I’m against her having an iPad (i legit know 3 year olds with their own) but TV or playing an educational game on her leap frog are great!
@chichipin some parents are way overboard with the hand sanitizer! I’m all about building up immunities and am far from a germophobe.
@varimama after too- that’s great that some women want to have a glass of wine every so often. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but it’s not for me. If I’m giving up pooping alone for the next 5 years, i can give up wine for 9 months!
Maybe not an UO but need to put this somewhere. My healthcare provider SUCKS AT LOOKING AT CHARTS!!!! Why every time I talk to them or go in for a visit do I need to get asked the same damn questions!? I just got off my pre-appointment call for my OB appt tomorrow and they literally did not ask me a single question that is not answered in my chart and records already. I'm sure tomorrow they are going to ask me the same stuff and test me for things I have recently had tested. WHY WHY WHY the waste of my time!! /rant
@sunflower_auryn YEEESSSS!!! My provider is the same way!!! Last pregnancy my OB didn't even realize that DS's anatomy scan had an abnormal result (he ended up being fine). When I asked her for her thoughts about it she was completely clueless. And yup, the nurse/CNA always asks me a list of questions that the doc RE-asks when she comes in. It makes me feel like no one is actually listening, and doesn't actually put things in my chart.
@varimama agree. I've made my decisions based on actual scientific data and feel I've made the best decisions for myself and my baby. I saw someone on here say that they'd had been put on pelvic rest for a condition (can't remember what - maybe a SCH), but "Ooops, couldn't say no to DH this morning!" ....... Uuuummmm, wut. That's gross and irresponsible. Going against actual medical advice and endangering your baby make me ragey.
@stassischroeder we have the Amazon kid tablets for both of our boys. We have curated what is on it, and they generally just get used when we are away from home and need to keep the kids entertained in situations that aren't as kid-focused. But they both love Disney movies and educational kids YouTube channels and watch them often. DH and I have not put screen time limitations on our kids, we just try and do a mix of different activities with them through the day.
uhm @stassischroeder wtf. okay new OU - I get ragey when women don't get their partners involved in their prenatal care or at least make them aware of bodies/babies/etc
@laurenm2123 Agreed! All of the shows that DS seems to like at this point are educational, so why the hell not take advantage of him (or your daughter) being occupied for a few minutes??? DS has always been high-needs, so if I can get the dishes or laundry done - or *gasp* sit down for 3 minutes - while he watches a show you can bet your sweet *ss I'm going to do it.
@kailanae I can see us getting a tablet for DS and treating it the same way that you do. Honestly I have no idea how parents survived before the age of tablets and in-car entertainment systems
uhm @stassischroeder wtf. okay new OU - I get ragey when women don't get their partners involved in their prenatal care or at least make them aware of bodies/babies/etc
Exactly!!! This isn't 1950. If you don't demand involvement from your SO, or they don't offer it voluntarily.... goooood luck to you and we can't be friends because we're clearly people with vastly different priorities. Or maybe I'm just extra moody today
We do copious amounts of screen/tablet time, especially these days when I feel nauseous and tired all day.
idk if this is a UO but SAHM life is not for me. I could not do it. A couple months in the summer is all I can handle. I’d be a wreck without work. Of course I have nothing but respect for SAHMs because I do know how hard it is!
@kagesstarshroom I think you're wise to anticipate a LOT of expectations changing once bebe is actually here And you're crazy! Horseradish is amazing! And, fun fact, most wasabi served in the US is mostly horseradish with green food coloring.
@kantobean YAS. SAHM life would reduce me shambles.
@kagesstarshroom I wasn’t militantly anti-screen, but I wasn’t exactly pro-screens before baby. But I remember when DD was like 12-18 months some mornings she would be UP for the day at 4:30 am and we would just bring her in bed, give her a phone with Super Simple Songs playing on YouTube, and go back to sleep. Sometimes for an hour. 😂 You have to do whatever you can just to function!
UO I love being a SAHM. I hated work. Although my commute was awful and I wasn't allowed to work remotely so I would commute 3.5 hours roundtrip to do one hour of work that I could have done remotely. And then I would sit there for the remaining 7-8 hours until it was time to go home. I hated my life when I worked. Maybe if I had had a job I enjoyed I would have found work more appealing than catering to a tiny human all day.
@kantobean FFTC: I'm jealous that your 12-18 mo would be entertained by YouTube for an entire hour! DS is 16 mo and the longest he's ever been entertained by any screen is about 20 minutes.
@silverhope I’ve had a horrible job before (I was teaching, but at an awful school) and I think if I’d gotten KU then I may have quit and done the SAHM thing.
@stassischroeder DD loves screens 😂 I rarely let her watch for an hour at that age, but when we needed it, screens came through for us! Lol
I can’t think of anything super juicy, but my UO is I don’t think Bradley Cooper is hot, in fact I think he’s kind of creepy looking. I’d take John Krasinski over BC any day!
@laurenm2123 I was figuring my love for bloody marys would also rile up some opinions. It's like alcoholic salad breakfast! so good.
@kantobean I am PRETTY SURE DH judges people so hard when their small children have screens. & I'm just like, psychically, "please do not say words out loud about what you are thinking"
@kagesstarshroom I love Bloody Marys. One of my favorite preg drinks last time around was RW Knudsen Very Veggie Spicy (basically like organic V8). So amazing! but not light on the sodium, so you can’t go too hard on it, lol.
I’m pretty anti-screen, but since my kid’s been like 14 months or so, we occasionally watch 15 minutes or so of a cute show called puffin rock. Sometimes I feel that she needs the distraction while we wait for the Motrin to soothe some troublesome teething pain, or what have you.
I didn't allow DD screen time until she was 2.5, but she was so well behaved and would play on her own so it literally didn’t even cross my mind. Plus 9 years ago things were WAY different (wow just saying that ages me). Now DS has his own iPad. He’s 2. Granted it’s an iPad 1st generation that is obviously ancient and was sitting around the house. I put YouTube kids on it and a few toddler apps and totally rely on it in order to rest (or be on here), or cook dinner. I think as long as kids also have social time and play time there is nothing wrong with having screen time.
I cannot for the life of me think of a UO today and I even started the discussion. I’ll keep thinking.
We are currently a pretty anti-screen time family - only because DD is a great sleeper and pretty even keeled (knock on wood). I think our expectations around screen time would be different if DD had a different temperament. Things will likely change when #2 comes around! Also, I'm totally "you do you" on this issue, so no hate to any of you with different situations.
@stassischroeder It's like you read my mind! I actually thought about the situation you referenced MULTIPLE times because it rubbed me the wrong way. WTF to both parties there.
@chichiphin Huge eyeroll to those parents. I'm 100% anti-sanitizer in everyday situations.
@kagesstarshroom OMG alcoholic salad breakfast is the best! I had a virgin bloody mary the other day and it was *almost* as good as a real one.
AFM, my UO is random, but I hate when my friends who claim to be liberal and into human rights eat at Chick-fil-a! "But the chicken is sooooo good!" IMO, no chicken tastes as good as equality, respect and love. I feel the same way about Hobby Lobby.
@stassischroeder Same with the pelvic rest comment... and I'm with you on screen time. I have absolutely no problem with DS watching a show or movie for entertainment/learning. DH and I love movies and TV, and I work in TV, so it's just unrealistic to think I'm going to keep my kid from watching. Plus, youtube on the phone has saved us in public a few times. Like @kailanae DS is getting a kids Amazon tablet for his bday. I totally didn't think I'd be on board with that before I had kids, but now, pssshhhh.
@chichiphin Also roll my eyes at germaphobe parents. I know one who legit wiped her 8 month old baby's hands after a family member touched them, in front of said family member. She's a doctor too. Rude and unnecessary.
@kagesstarshroom I guess my UO is that I don't like bloody marys! I'm not a fan of tomatoes/tomato juice.
@sunflower_auryn That's so frustrating! Since I have appointments with different doctors within my practice, I feel like I'm always repeating myself and explaining my previous issues and it's annoying.
@keeksie84 I'm with you on Chick-fil-a! Yes the chicken tastes good, and I live 3 minutes from one, but I will not give them my money.
@keeksie84 Your UO is speaking my mind! I also hate people who say they love animals but eat (American) meat from (basically anywhere) places that use factory farming. Do you LOVE animals? Because if so, you should look into the quality of life/reproduction/mode of death that goes on there, and then, like, do you want to pay money and keep contributing to that and being part of the reason WHY it happens? OR do you actually LOVE how meat tastes, and you think animals are cute?
@keeksie84 Solidarity in judging ppl who shop/eat at places you know give $ to causes you disagree with. We live in a capitalist democracy where literally money is power-- wield your power wisely.
