High Risk Pregnancy

Anyone else diagnosed as high risk? I’m 5 weeks with baby #2, I had gestational hypertension with baby #1. The spike in blood pressure started early with her as well, 130/90 and spiked to 154/104 during the end of the second trimester. She turned out fine and I didn’t take any medications but was induced at 37 weeks. My BP went back to normal after birth and has been normal since, until now. They diagnosed me with GH early this time, and prescribed low dose aspirin and BP medication. Has anyone else had this? I’m afraid to take the medications and have it affect the baby, but my BP Tuesday and today was 148/102 & 148/100.

@AmandaNacora I haven't been for my official OB visit yet but I'm around 5w4d. I'm certain I'll be considered high risk. I'm 35yrs, have PCOS (which is controlled with Metformin) and I have fibroids. The biggest thing with me is GD, I'm trying to keep my diet under control and still workout. I am nervous out of my mind. This is my first pregnancy, which happened on it's own. I was excited and blessed to even get pregnant, I pray everyday that my pregnancy is a success.

@mistee16 Congratulations! Im nervous as well, hoping everything goes smoothly for both of us! The only plus I had with being high risk last pregnancy was the extra scans and NSTs, it gave me peace of mind to be able to hear and see my baby more frequently. Prayers for us both, these babies will be perfect!

I will most likely be classified as high risk with this pregnancy.  I'm 41, my water broke with DS just after 33 weeks, and I've had several losses.  I don't mind the extra appointments, but being on pelvic rest for several months and not being allowed to exercise gets old fast!

@AmandaNacora thank you and congratulations to you as well. I too am praying for a successful pregnancy and baby for us all. I don't see how some people can take this experience for granted 🤷🏾‍♀️. That would be nice to have the extra visits and scans, it would he very reassuring.

@bakerstreetboys I'm sorry to hear, but in the end it will all be worth it once you meet that little one 🥰. I'm praying for a smooth pregnancy and healthy baby for you.

I’m also a high-risk pregnancy candidate!  I have epilepsy, and my daughter (8 yo) was watched and scanned many times to make sure my meds weren’t damaging to her.  The only thing is that I’m on a different meditation this time and I’m hoping the risks attached are lower.  My first real appointment is this week on Thursday, so I should know by then what my treatment this time entails.  Here’s to safe pregnancy for all of us!
  • Options
@bakerstreetboys oh my! Hopefully this little one cooks a few weeks longer! I haven’t been put on bed rest, but it sounds awful! Wishing you a very healthy pregnancy!

@cpk3535 I’m sorry! It’s a very stressful situation, worrying if the meds you’re taking are affecting the baby. I had a very hard time with that last pregnancy. I felt so guilty. GL with your appointment Thursday! Here’s to happy and healthy pregnancies!

Hi!  I'll be high risk in this pregnancy.  I'm already working with an MFM in lieu of a regular OB.  DS had IUGR (growth restriction), heart disease, and a bunch of other issues.  He was delivered at 34 weeks because of reverse cord blood flow.  The plan this time is to get an early ultrasound (already scheduled for May 9), do the NIPT to find out the sex, and have at least 2 fetal echocardiograms - the first at 14 weeks.  If the baby is a girl and everything looks ok, we will not do a CVS or amnio.  If the baby is a boy, we may do a CVS or amnio even if things look alright just to make sure he has no chromosome deletions or duplications.

@AmandaNacora Wow that sounds really scary!  I'm glad you were able to hold out to 37 weeks.  I'm also on low dose aspirin to try and prevent IUGR.
@mistee16 I have fibroids as well.  I've been told that they shouldn't affect my pregnancy, but who really knows.  I'm trying to eat really healthy this time around as well - we can be accountability buddies!
@bakerstreetboys I didn't know you had a preemie!  Do you know when you have to start pelvic rest?
@cpk3535 How did your appointment go today?

I had Gestational Hypertension with my first as well as a single umbilical artery so I was induced on my due date. My first appointment with my midwife isn't until May 21st and I'm slightly nervous about GH again and if my previous Dx means anything this time around.
  • Options
@SpongeWorthy Yes, my 2.5 year old DS was born at 34 weeks!  He was quite big for a preemie, but we were infected with a blood infection while I was in the hospital, so he was born quite sick.  Pelvic rest for me just means no sex from date of egg retrieval (which was almost 4 weeks ago) until the end of the first trimester at least  :/  I'm glad they have a plan in place for you with this pregnancy.  Fx everything looks great on May 9!
  • Options
@SpongeWorthy Oh that’s terrifying! Hoping all is well this pregnancy for you! I’m terrified of IUGR this pregnancy since the high BP started early, having my 5th Drs appointment tomorrow, my BP is staying high :/  Definitely had a few scares with my DD having irregular heart beats and not reacting to stimulation so I’m worried already... it’s going to be a long, worrisome 8 months!
  • Options
@ashorkey May 21st?? That’s such a long wait 😫 I hope you don’t have GH this time around. I’m trying to get my Dr to give me an early US, I’m just so anxious and with DD I found out I was PG at 10 weeks so the scans started right away, this waiting is torture. I’m having some cramps and no real symptoms so I’m freaking out already.

Hi everybody, I’m keeping hopes up for all of us.  My doctor’s appointment is tomorrow morning with a doc I’ve never met before, and I’m pretty nervous.  I feel a little more at ease because my husband gets to come with me this time (last time, prior to my miscarriage in September, he stayed with our daughter while I went in alone).  I know I’m going to be high risk on a few levels, we’ll see what they think I should be tested for tomorrow.  I’ll keep you all posted ❤️👍😊

Also, tomorrow puts me at approximately 7 weeks, 2 days.  I hope I see a heartbeat- last time, all we had were empty yolk sacs.  It was weird, because that first appointment, the doc implied I might be pregnant with twins.  So, going from underdeveloped twins to a miscarriage in a week and a half was quite a mental and physical body slam.

Also, sorry if any of this is repetition of something I’ve already shared...I hope I’m less slightly less anxious following tomorrow’s appointment.

Hi ladies, I have a feeling I am going to be in the high risk category this time around as well. With DS I had increasing BP from 2nd trimester on. Bed rest for 6 weeks with induction at 37.5 weeks which ended with an emergency c-section. My DD I didn't see the BP issues until 37 weeks and she was born via VBAC at 41 weeks without the same issues as DS.

This time I am incredibly bloated, having dizzy spells, shortness of breath and can tell my BP is up. Thinking on calling my doc and seeing if I can get in sooner, I am freaking out a bit.

Oh and I am almost 34 and "obese" so I am sure those factors are not going to help...

I’m high risk as I had pre term labor with both my children, before them I had a partial molar pregnancy and now I had to do IVF the past several months to get pregnant and last cycle I had a miscarriage. We met with our high risk doctors, was only allowed to transfer 1 embryo. I have to start P17 shots like my previous pregnancies from 16-36 weeks. Nice to meet you all!

@AmandaNacora my midwife does first appointments at 10 weeks. Because we did IVF this time around we have a viability u/s with my IVF doctor on May 1st.

@AmandaNacora thank you!  Our appointment went great today, everybody- had an ultrasound for 7w2d, showing a strong heartbeat and measuring according to the conception date.  Phew!  Now, I filled out my prenatal care high risk questionnaires, then I have a phone appointment in about a week to discuss those, and they should be able to decide what is required of me after this.  My anti seizure medication is on their list, and sometimes my doc today was telling me women with epilepsy will spike during pregnancy with more seizures, and some will drop off and have very few.  So far, I’ve had one extra batch of seizures this pregnancy, so we’ll see if that was just stress-induced or hormonal fluctuations.  Luckily, my having seizures doesn’t endanger the baby unless I injure myself externally, so that’s a plus.

@cpk3535 I am also high risk with epilepsy but things are a bit complicated..... I was diagnosed at 21 and was on meds for 10 years. Two years ago my neuro suspected I may have been misdiagnosed or "grew out of it". For the past two years I have seen so many specialists here in Toronto trying to figure me out. All my EEGs have been clear. Since last June, they weaned me off my meds and I haven't had any seizures. So now I'm pregnant and they're watching me like a hawk. Last week I got a dizzy spell and was so scared I was feeling my aura and a seizure was coming. Thankfully it wasn't. I am happy to be off the meds due to the risks to baby, but terrified I may have a seizure again or they may put me back on meds.

Congratulations on seeing your Little's heartbeat. I hope to see mine next Wednesday April 24.

@loandbaby that’s great that you’re not taking a regular medication right now!  I’m so happy for you that you’ve got some control over your epilepsy.  Whatever you do during this, try not to let yourself stress out and cause a flare-up.  My seizures have morphed  over the years from mild experiences with lights in movie theaters, to now typically flaring up over some cocktail of work stress and hormones.  Luckily, I only get petit mal, so I don’t black out, but still not really fun.

My doctors have ticked me off repeatedly, when I’ve asked to be reassessed, they have told me it’s not necessary, several times.  The thing is that my seizures have changed from a single seizure experience to a multi-seizure, day long experience followed by days of auras over the years.  Some months are better, some are worse.  I like my neurologist, but I don’t understand the logic in not retesting.

I use yoga and meditation to try to help myself, and I would say that’s made the biggest difference for me.  In the meantime, i keep taking my meditation (Keppra) just to stay on track.

@cpk3535 thank you for sharing. I've never met anyone else who is going through the same thing, let alone another woman who was also TTC. It's touching to me to have connected with you so thanks for sharing your story.

I was diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and put on lamotragine. It was one of the safer meds but did cause neural tube defects. I moved to Australia for three years to do my masters degree and never really had good follow up. I had episodes where I would pass out and sometimes convulse. Now, My neuro thinks it was just syncope (fainting) all along, only one EEG showed the polyspike waves they look for... But unfortunately that record is not available for her to reanalyzed bc it was on a CD and got damaged. I've had full cardiac work ups but they found nothing. Over the years, There were times I would miss a dose, not knowing the dangers of skipping doses because I basically was slapped on the drug and immediately moved without follow up... and due to withdrawal from the meds, would have actual seizures. So the lines got blurred as to what was going on. My episodes are triggered by stress, lack of sleep, hunger, being too hot or a combo of that... Which are also triggers for syncope so there's no way to really tell. The trouble is..  there's not much I can do to control the syncope and if I do pass out and fall, it can hurt the baby.

I use yoga too to reduce stress. Trying really hard to not get myself get worked up but it's hard. Especially at night I find myself just thinking too much and worrying... I think I'll feel better once I see that heartbeat. :)

@cpk3535 and @loandbaby I would never have thought about how impactful epilepsy could be with a LO on the way! Scary stuff but sounds like you both have good support systems and now have each other as a sounding board!

@SpongeWorthy excuse my ignorance but does IUGR only affect males? Or is it just lower odds in females?

Update: went to the doc today and they suspect I developed chronic hypertension sometime over the last few years because high BP this early caused by pregnancy is not likely. I am officially high risk and they are putting me on one of the safer BP meds and going to go with the lowest dose possible to control it. One positive is I will get to see baby more often as we go and sooner than usual for my practice. Next week Friday will be my first ultrasound to make sure everything is good and to check dating etc.

@sdegrootmom3 No IUGR can affect either sex.  The reason we’re testing for sex is because I carry a potentially damaging gene mutation on one of my X chromosomes.  It’s more risky if we have a boy because he will only get an X chromosome from me, so it makes it more likely that it’s the potentially dangerous one.  They think the IUGR was most likely caused by a gene mutation in DS, not an environmental factor.  I’m sorry your BP issue is more complicated.  I hope the new medication works!

This is my 2nd pregnancy. I had a miscarriage last September.  I have lupus so I know I'll always be high risk. I'm having a hard time with the doctors taking my requests for referrals to see a maternal fetal medicine specialist seriously since I've moved to a new state. They don't get why I want to see someone special and are blowing it off which is increasing my anxiety.

    @sdegrootmom3
Thats what they told me with my first pregnancy, despite having normal BP throughout the year they told me being diagnosed with GH before 20 weeks isn’t likely... well BP dropped back to normal after birth and remained normal, until now. This time the did diagnose me with GH before 20 weeks because of my history and the fact that I’ve been to office multiple times this year with normal BP. So it can be the pregnancy! I’m taking low dose BP meds also which dropped it from a steady 148/102 to 122/85. Happy I get to see baby more often but definitely anxious about the potential effects high BP can have... hoping we both have a happy, healthy pregnancy!

    Hi all,

I have Type 1 Diabetes since 2001 and I manage with an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. Not a lot to do right now as I will only start seeing the MFM at 20 weeks for a fetal echo. My first baby was completely healthy and I hope I can have another healthy uncomplicated pregnancy this time. I'm not off to a great start though. 7 weeks this week and it is HARD to keep my blood sugars controlled. Hormones have a mind of their own and make my blood sugars do whatever they want without reason. I'm exhausted this time. Plus hungry and nauseous all the time.. the struggle is real.

I will be. I have Crohn's Disease, and Autoimmune liver disease. I also have an 8 month old daughter, who had IUGR. I had gestational diabetes with her, along with elevated AFP. She came four days before my induction day. I had spoken to my OB about wanting to try for our second while still in remission and off of immunosuppressants and she gave us the go ahead a month and a half ago to start trying. We discussed that I will be high risk again.

@loandbaby lurking from August (sorry for being creepy)...I know you said you had a full cardiac workup, but did they do a stress test and check your QT interval? A lot of people with Long QT Syndrome are misdiagnosed with epilepsy for years. The challenge with LQTS is that it can be hard to find and there are lots of varieties of it that present in different ways.

I have my first phone appointment to look at my high risk testing on Wednesday this week, and then a follow-up in office the following Wednesday.  I honestly have no idea what to expect.  My first pregnancy was 9 years ago, and my medication was different, and hormone levels felt quite different, too.  I've also used yoga and ayurveda since then to bring better balance to my stress/anxiety levels, and to improve my digestion.

According to my medicine's records, Keppra is not supposed to be a high risk medication for pregnancy, but I'm not sure if they just don't know enough about it to tell what the risks are (it hasn't been around for that long).  So far, this time I've had one random seizure day (I'm usually about 30-40 days apart on seizures, this one was only about 20 days).  I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter, my hormone levels didn't seem to really balance out and had my seizures pretty regularly.

Anyway, I hope everybody's hearing good things so far from their high risk appointments/conversations.  I'll keep you posted!  I'm at 8W5D today.

I'm just joining the board but I'm high risk.  Advanced Maternal Age, Recurrent Loss, Gestational Diabetes.  With my son I also developed some hypertension at the end and had placenta previa (which oddly resolved at like 37 weeks).  So far this time no hypertension and they haven't checked placenta placement.

I'm going to jump on this form now. I've been hoping I wouldn't have to but facts are facts at this point. I have been diagnosed with hypertension now and they are going to put me on blood pressure medication. I also have been showing elevated protein in my urine so I'm currently doing a 24 hour urinalysis to check for preeclampsia. Praying it isn't that, especially this early (20 weeks).
