UO/FFFC 7/25

I'm slacking. I just get get started with my day and then forget. I thought I would just combine these two threads. If y’all want them separate just let me know.

Re: UO/FFFC 7/25

  • I like the threads together.

Here is my FFFC. I handle the money in our household - I pay our mortgage, all our bills, etc. MH is not that good with money and he knows it. I look at all his purchases and sometimes I give him a hard time about stuff he's bought as not being part of our budget, useless, waste of money, etc. Last week I went to my parents' house for dinner while he was working, and I went out to run an errand and I stopped into this nearby boutique that I follow on instagram. I had seen this dress on their instagram and really wanted to try it on, it is like a white, tropical floral print maxi dress, very flown. It fit right now even pregnant and I had tried on the small so I assume it will still fit next summer. I bought that dress (which was $80, so not cheap) and hid the purchase on a credit card that I have and MH does not. I'm not planning on telling him I bought this and will just play it off like I bought it awhile ago if he notices that it is new, which he likely won't.

  • @creamcheeseplease my husband does the finances in our house. We usually try to talk about the things we want to buy and I will usually run all my big purchases by him just to make sure it won’t hurt us. One day I went to the mall and on the way out the door I told him I was going shopping and I wasn’t window shopping. I spent over $500 that day. He mentioned it to me and I told him I said I wasn’t “window shopping.” 😂 I guess he didn’t realize I was coming home with new wardrobes for the kids. Plus I bought new shoes for everyone. It was a wonderful day. Quite frankly, I waited a long time being married to a medical student and resident for the days I could just go to the mall and blow a lot of money. I felt no guilt!

@creamcheeseplease that dress sounds cute! buy all the things I say! Doesn't sound like you do it on the regular.

I usually run bigger purchases (>$250) by MH and he does the same with me. I used to work in fashion so I've been successful at convincing him that timeless, high-quality staples are good investments. My bigger shopping problem that he gets at me for is buying a million small things all the time. Both of us do it...especially with Amazon purchases. It might just be a $10-15 an item...but the volume that we seem to buy each month is out of control.
  • @emeraldcity1214 that sounds like a real shopping spree but sounds like it was all stuff you guys needed too! I don't blame you for feeling that way especially because I'm sure it was tough while YH was still in school.

@mc0303 yeah big purchases I do discuss. Amazon is so easy to just click a button, you're right. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on there! It's so convenient though.
  • @creamcheeseplease I definitely paid my dues. We never splurged on anything and I always bought second hand back then. Those kinds of shopping sprees don’t happen on the regular but I do enjoy them when I get to do it. I’m not even sure how we survived with 3 kids on his residency salary. I haven’t worked since before college.

I used to have all of our Amazon purchases come to my card, but then my husband switched it to his and I think he was surprised at how much I spent  :D In my defense, I rarely go to stores just get stuff on Amazon so I think it evens out  ;) We have an understanding where when he asks how much it costs, I tell him $10 hahaha. But we do run our big purchases by each other. There are some things that I put on my card and never reveal the price because he'd flip, like my hair appointments when I get highlights.

@creamcheeseplease that dress sounds so pretty, glad you found one that will work both now and later. Those are my favorite purchases.
  • The cost of highlights is so outrageous. It is why I haven’t really ever dyed my hair. The idea of the upkeep kills me plus I would much rather spend that money on something else. I am going to have to find a good box dye to start using because my grays are getting bad.

@emeraldcity1214 it's ridiculous! The only reason I keep doing it is because of the grays. I've debating using that online hair color service called Madison Reed, but I'm so nervous!
  • I love my highlights and definitely won't give them up.  It helps that my husband has someone come to the house to cut his hair so over the course of the year his end up costing more. :)

  • @BNBT I have never heard of Madison Reed. What is it all about?

@emeraldcity1214 from what I understand it’s like box dye, but it’s supposed to be better. Like more dimensional or something. And you order it online and I think you can set up a subscription so they send it to you every few months. You take a quiz that helps them better determine the right color for you.

ETA: I don’t know anyone who has used it, I just hear commercials for it on some of the podcasts I listen to!

We don’t share money at all. Not in a bad way either... we were just already older and not broke when we got married so we just never had to combine anything. We each cover an equal amount of bills and then don’t need to have any discussions about who spent what on what. My husband is not a shopper at all- he lived a very sparse existence for a long time living on job sites so I buy the “things” he needs. He does spend way too much money eating lunch out and if it were my money he’d have a problem but it’s not 😄
I’m a dr so I lived for too long with nothing that now my spending/shopping policy is usually “if we don’t have it, we don’t need it” and that suits us both well enough.

  • It's so interesting to see how everyone works out their financials. Like anything else there's really no wrong way as long as it works for you-- especially in relationships where it can get really tricky. I'm a SAHM but I took over the finances officially last year because my husband is just awful about spending/saving. He's not much of a shopper but he doesn't think twice about splurging and that's gotten us into trouble.

When he gets paid he keeps a set amount for himself to get through the week work-wise and the rest gets transfered to me for bills and household things. We also have a set amount that gets set aside weekly in cash and another bit that's gets sent to a third account where we have big auto payments coming out monthly. It was a struggle at first because he felt kind of possessive over his money 🙄 but he has access to it all at anytime. It works, and now we actually have savings, lol.

Last year, he received unemployment for 26 weeks out of the year which is not more than 450/week if I remember. I still don't know how we did it but we managed to not get over our head or behind in any bills that year and he made almost 20K less than the year before.

@creamcheeseplease you would know where you stand financially and you're allowed to reward yourself every now and then 😉 enjoy your purchase
  • Speaking of auto payments, DH has decided to get me a brand new van. The one I’m driving is only 3 years old and it was brand new when I got it but I want the newest model of the Honda Odyssey. The updated screen display on the dash and the better rear entertainment system. It won’t change my payments much since we have only had this van for 3 years and my van took a beating on the way through Canada when they were on the roads going into Alaska. Plus DH sat in sap and got it all over my leather seats. 😒
  • MH seems to think that once my lease is up in 2 years and then his car is paid off he will be "gifting" me his car and getting a new one. Hard nope... lol.
  • BNBTBNBT member
@emeraldcity1214 Congrats on the new van, that's exciting!

@creamcheeseplease My husband thinks he's going to do the same in a year or two. I just look at him like he's lost his mind.
  • @creamcheeseplease - HAHAHA silly husband.

@emeraldcity1214 - Yay new van!  I love my Honda Odessey (things I never thought I would say pre-kids)

When my husband agreed to get the van 2 years ago the deal was that I have this for 10 years and then once the kids can handle getting into a bigger car I can go to an SUV which is what I wanted over the mini-van.  But I have to say, he was right, the van is so easy for little ones to climb in and out of without me bending & lifting overly much.

I am also on the SAHM side, my husband does all the finances though.  We joke that he gives me an allowance since I don't 'officially' have a budget.  Whenever he stays late at work or gets to take a 'boys' trip.  I just mentally add $100/day to my account to spend when it is my turn for a vacation and he doesn't get to say anything.  It works for us :P
  • Why do men think that we want their hand-me-downs? 🤔
  • mc0303mc0303 member
Lol! I totally was about to hand my car down to MH!

He’ll need a new car soon and I just bought a small sedan last year...we weren’t thinking about the whole baby thing. I told him I’d buy a new bigger car and give him the one I just bought. He didn’t seem keen on the idea 😂

  • My husband wanted to to get me a new car but since we bought him a truck last year and my car is paid off, I am refusing. I dont like the idea of two car payments. My car will get a little snug with two kids (ford focus) but since we use his truck for all things travel and family stuff and my car is really just to get me to work/run errands Im happy to stick with it. Plus he got me an automatic car starter for mothers day so I am happy!

My husband makes sure all bills get paid because I would forget. But right before we got married 5 1/2 years ago we got YNAB which is an app budgeting thing. We track literally every penny in it and have this whole time. Occassionally we try to set some budget limits but overall we found that just tracking where all of our money went made us more mindful. We talked about tracking some stuff closely in August-November to save some extra money on groceries and restaurants since I will be going without paying during maternity leave.
  • @purplefan1 I am going to look into YNAB.. tracking spending with upcoming maternity leave sounds like a really good idea. Thanks!
  • UO - crab and cream cheese wontons are better with less crab, heck no crab is even better.

Hello! All cream cheese, all the time. So I agree. Yum.
  • blg116blg116 member
@drama_llama it's all about JUST cream cheese wontons.  No need for the nasty stuff like crab
  • Annnnd now I want Chinese food...
  • Wait! What?! No, y’all must have not had some good crab and cream cheese wontons. They are delicious!
  • I can't stand Chinese food.  Blah!!!

  • @perfectoops - So sad!  There is nothing better than chicken and broccoli over a mountain of rice.  UGH now I want chinese food too!
  • I had Panda Express Monday night. 😁
  • We got Pei Wei for dinner and I forgot that they have bougie wontons that are mostly crab meat.  I regretted wasting my carbs, LOL.   The rest was good and they have cauliflower rice, so bonus!
  • I just ordered Chinese for dinner. Using door dash for the first time because this momma is not feeling running to get it hahaha
