FWIW re: peanut butter

No, I've never asked a PB question or really thought much about it, but I DID read in one of my pregnancy books something about pregnant women consuming lots of PB had babies with peanut allergies more than those who did not. I know, it doesn't make sense to me since there are so many thing we could or could not eat that baby could or could not be allergic to, I'm just saying I did read it in a pregnancy book.

Re: FWIW re: peanut butter

  • I think asking about peanut butter is a legit question since there are conflicting reports out there. Some books suggest peanut butter as a good source of protein (Pregnancy Week by Week) and I hear others say to avoid due to the possibility of your child developing a peanut allergy.

I asked my OB about this and she said there are studies that show A) pregnant moms eating peanut butter will help prevent a peanut allergy and B) the opposite: eating PB will cause it.

I'm still eating peanut butter, but in moderation. I absolutely LOVE peanut butter and hope my child won't be allergic to it. I guess we'll see.

  • Yup, peanut butter allergies are so much more common now, we have to wonder where they come from right?  My mom has been a pre school teacher for 23 years and I remember when they had to start banning any peanut products in the school because SO many children were now allergic, whereas a pb&j used to be a staple lunch food! Crazy!

I asked my Dr too and she said she'd never heard that so who knows.... I've been eating it in moderation or if I am desperate for some protein to take my meds.

  • I've heard of it too. But NOT from my MW...I don't remember where I saw it. I actually think our pedi mentioned it...

Anyways, I think what I always think: everything in moderation...I ate it while pg with DS and he's fine...so far so good, although he's to young for PB right now =)

I guess her ?? was better than the regular ones - drinking, tattoos, smoking pot ;)

Pretty much if the march of dimes and my ob says its ok, I will eat it.

I also want to say there was a study in England because doctors told pregnant women not to eat nuts, and there was a dramatic increase in nut allergies in their children.  but I can't remember where I heard it nor can I find it on google right away so I won't swear by it.

  • I'm allergic to peanut butter and nuts in general - it's a sad affliction! My mother hates peanut butter, so it definitely didn't happen in utero in my case. Did read some bits and pieces about the allergy link somewhere - I forget what book.?

Hm that is interesting.  I guess no one really knows and I'm not sure I believe either "side" 100%, but I also just don't think it's a "stupid question" since obviously it seems we've all read various and conflicting things.  For now though, I'm enjoying my random peanut butter spoonfuls, sans the trans fat of course. :)
