Hobbies and Activities: safe and fun ways to pass the time

I feel like there are all these activities you are NOT supposed to do in pregnancy and the list seems to keep growing.  I thought I'd start a thread where we can talk about hobbies and activities we can still enjoy doing.  It might give others ideas of ways they can keep busy the next 9 months when they aren't allowed continue on their sports team or decline that invitation to go to the amusement park.  So what do you enjoy doing in your free time now?  Are there any hobbies or activities you are looking to try that you've never done before?  Once we have a baby we may not have time for these activities either, so enjoy them while you can!

*Note that every pregnancy and every woman is different.  Just because something is safe for one person doesn't mean it's safe for everyone; if you have any questions if something is safe for you please discuss it with your doctor.*

Re: Hobbies and Activities: safe and fun ways to pass the time

  • I enjoy working outside, gardening, raising chickens and ducks.  These things keep me occupied and keep me sane.  I like to think I will read more since I am exhausted and don't feel I will have the energy to hike as much.  My doctor said to limit physical activity above 10,000 ft.  While to many this may sound like a reasonable request, don't go climbing mountains or snowboarding, to me this is challenging as my house is at 10,000 ft. so everything I do is at altitude.  I'd like to continue with yoga though I guess I may need to modify my routine.  I'd like to continue hiking and camping, but again I may need to tone down the intensity.

  • I have lots of boring hobbies haha- knitting, sewing, reading, journaling, gardening, composting, and keeping a zero waste house keep me busy... I usually like cooking and prepping snacks and goodies from scratch, although I’ve been lackluster in that area since being so exhausted. Hoping once nausea is over I’ll be on it more.

Weren’t there a few other crafters in this group?? Does anyone do the zero waste thing? I know it’s gaining in popularity!
  • @craftywitch I don’t do exactly do the zero waste thing, but everything around here seems to get reused.  I do compost as well.  The waste material from the ducks is great for the garden and isn’t too hot so I don’t have to age it at all.  Do you grow flowers or veggies or what?
  • @pirateduck Oh yeah I bet your chickens and ducks are great for the soil! I have a container garden and a community garden and I mix pollinator friendly wildflowers and sage with veggies- this year I’m hoping to have green beans, salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, radishes, kale, mint, cucumbers, green onions, and squash. My biggest problem with mingling plants is I can’t tell the wild flowers from the weeds! What do you grow? Are you limited by the altitude?
  • @craftywitch
I am limited by a few things.  One is that we have a very short growing season and could get frost pretty much any night of the year.  The other battle is that the uv is more intense at high altitude and burns the leaves off thing.  On top of that, the prairie dogs think I'm planting an all you can eat buffet!  I have a flower bed where I'm slowly learning what the rabbits and prairie dogs won't eat.  Each year it looks a bit better.  In my raised beds and cold frames I do well with potatoes and various salad greens and strawberries.  I've failed with many other things.  Every summer is a bit of an experiment.
  • @DDRRT1982 what kind of museums? Art, history, science, everything?
  • This is exactly why I started this thread, I could totally go to a museum, but the water park is probably out.
  • All of them.  I love our local museum that is science and nature based.  They also have all kinds of activities throughout the year for kids and adults.  Downtown we have a big science museum and aquarium.  You could go to the zoo or see what your local library offers.  If I had the time I would jump into our local library’s conversational Spanish meetups.  It would be cool to learn how to speak with others.
  • @SheHulk723 with all your fiber crafts are you planning on making anything fun for the baby?

@ibabyloveb87 I totally miss the beach.  I grew up relatively close and now the closest beach is a lifetime away.  My parents and sister do live at the beach now though and I am planning a trip to visit soon!

  • @pirateduck I hadn't really thought about it yet. My current project is a dress I'm working on for myself for our anniversary. Now I have to take into account that I might have a little extra belly by then haha. I made quilts for my two older kiddos, so I'd like to make one for this one as well (obviously not to go in the crib). I might have to start looking at some more baby patterns for other things!

  • I love knitting... I can also crochet but I'm more comfortable knitting. I plan on making another baby sweater and maybe more blankets for baby soon. Just trying to finish a pair of socks I've been making. It would be cool if we could post pics of our projects here in our bmb! Maybe we'll be inspired to do more crafts while we wait :)
  • We are going to try an kayak a bit this summer! So hopefully that goes well lol

  • @brookert615 I’ve seriously been looking at buying a kayak!  I like being on the water.  I don’t know if I could whitewater kayak though, but I’m ok with flat water and ocean.
  • @pirateduck Yeah only calm waters lol! I don’t own one but we just rented some a month ago which was fun! There’s a lot of parks around us that seem pretty chill and it would be a nice relaxing day I think!

  • Of course I was invited white water rafting this weekend, and while the doctor didn’t specifically list this as something I shouldn’t do, I’m pretty sure it should be filed in that category.  It may be time to find a new book to read!
  • I have been working in my garden off and on all weekend.  It has been perfect.  Since it’s an activity at home I could just pop inside whenever the sun was a bit much and drink some water and lay down.
  • @pirateduck Oh man, yeah I would definitely say it would not be on the list lol. Glad to hear that gardening has been a good hobby!!!

  • I love crafty stuff! I DIYed a lot of the signs and stuff for our wedding and have been pinning some stuff to make for baby's future nursery. I say future because unless we can break our lease and move sooner....we're stuck in a small one bedroom apartment until next May when baby will be 2 months old! -_- but I'm also working with my sister to plan my moms surprise 50th birthday in January. I guess planning is my hobby?? Sure feels that way.
