Omg @kagesstarshroom, I totally thought of you the other day because one of our Bay Area newspapers reported that a car was broken into and a backpack was stolen with a laptop - which had THE ONLY COPY of the owner's thesis. I wanted to have a panic attack or throw up (or maybe both) for that person. Please keep more than one copy of your thesis!!
@ruby696 💛💛💛💛💛💛 I definitely worry about that sort of thing! I print versions of my critical essay occasionally, but--you're right, I should probably update them in Google Docs more often than I do. My poetry manuscript is safe bc it's done & I send it out so often (it's a part of my diss.) & I have the most recent version of my play printed (also a part of my diss.) THANK YOUUUUU.
Fun fact: if you ever have a writing project--or ANY sort of project--that you were working on, this is the best method I've heard of. 25 minutes of writing, then 5 minute breaks, for up to 4 times, and then a longer break (10-30 minutes, depending on your preferences) before another set of 4. Your brain is apparently able to truly focus for 25 minutes at a time as long as it knows it's getting that 5 minute break soon! I'm doing it right now! & chose to use my second 5 min. break to visit yall. There's a site that supports this method, too: https://tomato-timer.com/
@kagesstarshroom Ummm, that is super cool, and I am totally going to try it tomorrow! I have a huge amount of data to crunch, and it's super boring, so I keep letting myself get distracted. Next thing I know, the day is gone and I've gotten so little done. I'm definitely trying this!!! Thanks! Can you just like... be my life coach? K, cool.

@NYTino24 not sure if you were talking about wearing the dress for Mickey's Halloween Party or just to the park for fun, but Disney has rules about adults dressing in costume (as in it's not allowed and you won't be admitted into the parks). Disney is crazy protective of their brand/characters. I can imagine it's a safety/security thing too. The rumor is that years ago a woman who did not work for Disney was drunk and walking around in a Snow White costume taking pictures with other guests. This might be an urban legend though, like Walt being frozen.
Haha @inthewoods23 They're mostly good! She came back and spouted off some foolish defensive crap, but then it was hijacked by GIFs and a plan for a massive TTGP birthday party for @chichiphin, @dpchickens, and @bows22 who all amazingly share the same birthday!

@shamrocandroll I will be your life coach. Let me know how the tomato-timer method works for you when you try it!!! I got four solid spurts of 25 minutes of productivity in today, with a few other ones plus lapses. BUT, enough work to send part 3 of 5 of my critical essay to my diss director!!!!!! 2 done, and a bunch of edits to go. wooooo.
Is anyone here a junior league member? I'm thinking about doing it, as it is more of a "professional women" situation where I live... it was more of a society thing when I was in the south. opinions welcome!
Does anyone here own an air fryer? Do you love it? I'm so tempted to get one, but I don't want to end up with a kitchen gadget I never use. I'm currently purging a bunch of unused kitchen gadgets and thinking I might get one if I purge enough, but MH says that's not how purging is supposed to work.

@b_1029 When I relayed the catfish story to my BFF, the novel was definitely a detail I could not help but mention, and we had a good 😭over it, both being writers having difficulty placing books rn.
Today, I taught the (male) director of engineering what "mansplaining" means. He has 2 adult daughters in their 20s and said this helps put a lot of things into context with them. He said he's never heard the word before, and I said that's because he's a man, and therefore has never been mansplained to. I'm hoping he goes home and asks his daughters for their thoughts on it and has some positive dialogue that makes him think from another perspective!

LITERALLY EVERY TIME I log into Insta./FB, I discover someone else I know had a baby this gd week, also one of my friends from college is a baby photographer & someone else I know and follow used her to take their new babies (yes, multiples) (not from this week but still) photos recently and I am like whhyyyyyy stop shoving yr new babies in my faceeeeee aahhhgghghghhhahh! Okay back to my dissertation.
my bffs baby getting his newborn pictures done- so heartbreakingly adorable
And his response was “wanna try and make one of those later?” 😍 cute response but cmon DH I’m only on CD 8 and we have to use condoms bleh. I guess it’s just his way of acting excited even if it’s just about the act itself...
@b_1029 Thankssss. I feel like it was fine up until today when there was another one and I was like ANOTHER ONE!? Also, YH is cute, despite the whole "not being the right CD" thing. MEN, amiright.
@shamrocandroll I have an air fryer! I like it, but honestly don't use it as much as I thought I would. I'm sure there are things I haven't thought of, but I'm with you on so many unused kitchen things. My tip would be to get the biggest one possible. It thought mine was standard/big, but it really doesn't hold that much food, so I end up needing to do several batches, that take more time/attention than just putting said food in the oven.
Good morning! You may be wondering why your good friend Kages is up so early: it's because it's flooding in our area--not "evacuation" flooding yet, just--probably the second worst flooding we've gotten since we moved into this house/to this area (we weren't here for the first one, oddly enough) Our laundry/storage room has a good 4-5 inches of water in it right now. So is DH's studio/shop, but that was pretty well picked up in anticipation of when they open the spillways (which is a similar but different story) We picked up the back room (that was fun for 5:45am) so less will get ruined & now it's just a matter of waiting and hoping. I'll send some pics when it's lighter out--hopefully nothing got too effed. We've had a flash flood watch for two days now, good until 7pm tonight.

@kagesstarshroom Man that is a horrible way to start the day. I really hope that you have minimal damage/loss and there is no need to evacuate! Positive vibes!!
For all the Handmaid’s fans, episode one was so good. I forced myself to bed though even though I wanted to stay up and finish the next 2. Hoping to abandon all responsibility at some point and watch ep 2 and 3 today.
Only thing I'll say about Handmaid's Tale is... I read the book years ago and it was very good. Dystopian future and all that of course. I remember thinking "Wow, this society got really F-ed up. Glad we live in a more enlightened society" and just enjoyed the read. I ONLY started watching the program a few weeks ago, and between actually seeing things paired with my situation and the political climate/newer abortion laws, it's a bit terrifying...
Basically what was an interesting dystopian fiction feels more like a how-to manual for nut-jobs...
@kagesstarshroom Oh no! So sorry you're dealing with that, I hope it doesn't get any worse and there's not too much damage! So much flooding lately and it just seems to be hitting more and more areas!
@dpchickens agreed -- the scariest parts of the first couple seasons for me were the flashbacks when things were starting to go off the rails in a way that the general population noticed, but everyone was kind of complacent/helpless/dumbfounded about it. ***spoiler for Handmaid's Tale Seasons 1/2 below***
Like, "Oh weird, women can't have jobs or bank accounts now...this is so crazy!" It was so true-to-life re: how many people feel now I think, with laws being passed that seemed outlandish 10 years ago but people (unsurprisingly) generally continuing their day-to-day lives.
