What's something that you believed as a child that you realized later was untrue?

For me... I definitely used to think that movies were real so when someone died in the movie they also died. I also for some time thought that people cast as a family/brother/sister/relative were actually related to each other.

I think it was an embarrassing amount of time before I realized how very incorrect I was.

Similarly, I thought that "old times" when my parents were young was all in black and white, because of old shows/movies.

I also thought that an earthquake was when the earth spun around too quickly.

I also believed I would marry JTT, then Taylor Hanson, then Brian Littrell... which all proved to be untrue.

Although I did meet Taylor Hanson last year, and he told me my hair was beautiful. *Swoon*

When I was a toddler I thought round hay bales were sleeping buffalo.

I was obviously only seeing them from a distance (whilst in a vehicle).

My mom told me once that I couldn’t roll down the windows when going through an underwater tunnel in NYC because water will get in. So for some reason I always thought tunnels had water in them when I was little lol

also she said that turning the inside car light on while she was driving was illegal HA

@chichiphin - haha the light inside the car. Was convinced my parents would immediately go to jail. Was there some meeting in the 1980s/90s that all parents went to where they conspired to tell their kids this?? Current parents -- do you still say this? I probably would just to keep the tradition alive.

For a long time I thought my older brother had written various famous songs including "Fools Rush In" and "500 Miles" because he sang/played them while learning guitar. I wasn't even that young honestly...high single digits I think. (He also probably led me to believe this.)

Random but I also always thought AC Slater was calling Zack Morris "crappy" instead of "preppy" on Saved by the Bell.

I used to think that we had different "shelves" that different food types went on. For example, there was a dinner shelf and a dessert shelf. That's why it was possible to be too full for dinner but still want dessert. I have no idea where I got that concept from, but I still joke about it with my family.

@chichiphin add me to the list of kids who thought it was illegal to turn on the interior car light!

When I was younger I always thought when I heard a song on the radio the band was actually there playing live. I'm sure there's others but I can't think of them right now!

I have another one that isn't me, but my SIL. She thought the sound of the cicadas in the summer (that sorta buzzy noise) was the sound of the sun. She was probably around 10 or something when one day, I think during a vacation to a lake, she said "the sun is loud" and DH's family looked at her with such confusion. I don't totally remember the story so it was either that, or DH's family was the one that originally led her to believe the cicadas noise was the sun. Funny either way!

+1 to thinking it was illegal to turn the interior car lights on

My dad definitely told me (and I believed him) that pictures used to be black and white because the world used to be black and white. Color was a recent invention according to him.

He also told me that if I wanted to find faeries I had to look for groups of mushrooms and then sit by them quietly waiting. I must have killed hours this way as a child 🤦🏻‍♀️

@varimama I must say I absolutely love the lies parents told either to keep their kids occupied, keep them from getting into something/trouble, or just plain so that the parent can be left alone.

Or as a kid you think the task they're asking you to do is for X, but I actually gets you to do Y (what the parent really wants to you do).

Hi 👋🏼 I introed in the newbies thread but I don’t really have reason to participate in WTO to TWW this cycle so I thought I would participate some here. Hope that’s ok!

@MrsVP614 I also thought old times were black in white. Once I saw a color photo of my mom as a kid and asked if she “colored it in” hahah.

@chichiphin omg! I’ve never been through an underwater tunnel but I would have been so freaked out by that as a kid. We used to go through tunnels in mountains to get into Virginia and I was always gravely concerned that the mountain would collapse on us.

@varimama the fairy lie is a great one. I might save that for future use if it keeps someone occupied hahah.

+1 for illegal to have lights on in the car at night.

I used to think (because my grandma told me this) that if I watched more than 1 hr of TV at a time without a break I would go blind. I also said bedtime prayers to myself at night and I thought if I forgot to mention someone in my family that God wouldn’t take care of them so for like a year I spend like an hour praying every night so that I could name every person I knew. After a while I started saying “I pray everyone good is taken care of and not anyone bad.” We didn’t even go to church or anything I just made up these “rules” on my own haha

@bjkay22 Omg same here! I thought I had to close all the loopholes in my prayers. I was sooooo thorough until I realized I could just say "everybody in the world who has ever or will ever live" to cover all my bases. I thought I was a genius.

Along the same lines as @inthewoods23, I thought that in movies when an actor is shown as a child and an adult, that it was the same actor. So I thought it took YEARS (ETA, like, decades) to make movies, lol. (And then Boyhood came out and it was the only time my childhood belief was real.

)

@whitealbum29 Have you seen that movie (is it even out yet?) where the guy realizes no one knows/remembers who the Beatles are so he pretends he wrote all their songs? I really want to see it bc it looked pretty funny.

I LOVE THIS GTKY. I thought dragons were real but had gone extinct in the middle ages until I was..... 22.

+1 to thinking it was illegal to drive with interior lights in and *TW LC* I do tell my kids we're not allowed to drive with the lights on.

When I was like 5, my cousin had me convinced you could talk to elves through heater vents. She would go in another room and talk in a vent and I was convinced the elves were talking to me. I was also convinced I saw a snipe once on a snipe hunt - I saw the glowing eyes in a ditch. I'm now pretty sure it was a rat or something, so eww.

Similar to the car lights, I was convinced that it was illegal to even ride in a car without shoes.

I also believed the seed thing. So traumatizing.

I once took a swig of my dad's beer instead of my cream soda that was right next to it. I spit it out alllll over the counter (during dinner) and sprinted to my bedroom crying that I was going to die. I was five. Apparently I thought the drinking age was nothing to mess around with.

um I don’t think I knew that it’s not actually illegal to drive a car with the interior light on? my dad was a cop so I guess he was very convincing

@mercury94 I think it is actually illegal to drive without shoes? Maybe that's specifically about the driver and not passengers.

Still though... I feel super weird even moving my car just in the driveway without shoes on (like backing out of the garage to give it a wash on the driveway)

@inthewoods23 It’s not illegal in Texas to drive without shoes, but you should have some in the car in case of an accident. Can’t speak about anywhere else.

I was thinking because of all the driving with the lights on (which my mom also told me was illegal) that I feel like I was told driving without shoes is illegal. But I looked it up and it's not in Oregon, and it was listed with 'common driving myths' though that doesn't mean it isn't illegal in other states.

@MJDsquared So I just looked it up bc I always thought driving w/out shoes was illegal too, & apparently it is legal in all 50 states. Not that it's something I think I would enjoy practicing, but I've definitely had, like, shoe malfunctions where I had to drive shoeless & worried it was illegal!

@mercury94 yeah it's probably just more of a safety thing to have shoes on than anything. Also how would they police that anyway? You can't see who does and doesn't have shoes on as they drive by.

@inthewoods23 I mean, there's a statute in Louisiana that has banned sodomy (for any and all genders)--not sure how they can enforce that one... though the Supreme Court invalidated the law in 2003, it is still on the books...

@kagesstarshroom That law was banned due to Lawrence v Texas related to our “homosexual conduct statute,” which is still on the books, but unenforceable. If I remember from law school, basically a neighbor waited until he knew his homosexual neighbor was having sex and called the police claiming there was a weapons violation. Because of a busybody, states can’t punish you for sodomy or homosexuality any more. Sometimes assholes fix bad things on accident.

@mercury94 Yes! I read about that earlier. But then I read that some states still have the law in the books, regardless of the Supreme Court decision--and ppl have fought to eliminate it in certain states, but it still remains in some, though it's "unenforceable." Dumbbbbb. So dumb.
