How much has everyone gained so far? I’m already at 33 lbs and my OB is on me about not gaining much more and, to be honest it’s having me feeling miserable.
Sorry to hear your OB is nagging you. Fixating on a number doesn't seem to be all that important unless you're gaining wayyyyy too much or too little, which you don't seem to be.
I'm at about 19 so far at 29wk. It's starting to plateau, but I've already gained about as much as I did for my last 3 pregnancies so I feel like I'm approaching uncharted territory here.
I’m sorry your OB is on you.... with my first, I remember I was really given a hard time which is just not helpful. 33 isn’t crazy and 1 lb/week putting you around 40 still isn’t that crazy to me. Hang in there!
I’m already up 40 pounds at 31 weeks. I gained 50 with my last pregnancy and all the women in my family have done about the same. My nurse midwife has been mentioning it but doesn’t want me to get worked up over it - I was kind of depressed about it for awhile but it’s not like it helped me slow the weight gain so 🤷♀️
If it makes anyone feel better, I don’t know how much I weigh and I don’t care how much I’ve gained! At my last OB appointment, doc said my weight was good and that’s all I need to hear. I am someone who had made an effort to get to a goal weight before pregnancy and I just got there when I found out I was pregnant. So, I’m not lax about fitness or my weight, but I have found this pregnancy to just have overtaken my routines and I refuse to obsess about weight. I do keep an eye on certain places of my body, just to know how I’m doing and a general sense of how much I’ll have to do to lose the weight once this pregnancy is done. If you had a workout routine before you were pregnant, it will be waiting for you once you feel back up to it again. If you didn’t have one, it’s just a great life habit that you don’t have to mentally get down about in the middle of your pregnancy. Fitness is a lifetime habit, and I have found this pregnancy to be so demanding on my body that I really just want to make sure my nutrition is good and my rest is good, more than my exercise. Definitely stay off junk food and don’t go crazy with sugar, and you can feel good about what you feed yourself and the fact that it’s making your baby healthy!
Your *optimal* weight gain really depends on where you started weightwise before you got pregnant, BMI, fitness, and all that good stuff.
I'm up 23lbs and based on my prepregnancy weight and BMI I should only gain 2 more lbs this pregnancy. That ain't happening.
It can be so hard but instead of looking at the number I'm focusing on food choices. While I absolutely do indulge occasionally without hesitation, I try to make healthier choices more often than not.
Exercising isn't an option at this point but I do stay fairly active going back and forth with the farm and going up our God forsaken stairs to our house a million times a day.

I think I'm at about 12 lbs. Last time I was up about 30 at this point, over 50 by the end (lots of it was water, but certainly not most of it). I exercised more last time, but am more active overall this time, with similar eating habits (though worse morning sickness this time around), so I'm pretty convinced a lot of it is specific to the pregnancy. As long as you are eating reasonable amounts of nutritious foods, limiting sugar and junk to reasonable amounts, and getting moving (I'm just walking and doing pn yoga), then you're taking care of yourself and baby... and you can tell your ob to keep it to themselves unless there's a medically significant increase (such as gaining a lot in a short period, which could indicate pre-e).
@mamahmh2 I am sorry your dr is on you about your weight. That is not easy? I’m at atleast 50lbs. I stopped looking at the scale two weeks ago. I’m lucky enough my dr hasn’t said anything about it too me. Weight has always gotten me stressed so for the first time I am trying not to worry about it. It will get worked off after baby arrives
I have had unexpected and unintended weight loss from my GD diet changes so now I’m only up about 2-3 lbs from my pre preg weight. It was alarming at first but I had some padding to spare when I got pregnant and baby is growing perfectly, so I’m not concerned.
Thanks for everyone’s inputs. I’m cutting back a little on my frequent snacking in hopes that it slows things a little. I may consider seeing another OB in the practice for a second opinion if I continue to put on weight despite my efforts to try and curb it. I’d like to get a female’s input as sometimes I find male OBs can be slightly more strict. We shall see! I can only do but so much.
I haven't weighed myself since 26 weeks (I'm 32 tomorrow) and I am not weighing myself again until maybe September. I've decided I just don't care and seeing numbers on the scale going up only makes me feel bad about myself. I'll deal with it once baby is here. I'm lucky my OB never mentions weight. I'm so sorry you were made to feel bad:(
I've gained 25lbs so far at 31 weeks. I gained about 45 or so with both of my previous pregnancies.
I've had unintentional weight loss or a week or not gaining each month due to being sick. I've had the flu twice and a variety of different viral infections. Everything my preschooler and kindergartner have brought home from school I have managed to catch.
I'm up 31 at almost 29 weeks, my OB hasn't mentioned anything.. yet.. I was supposed to gain 25 - 35 which seems impossible! I know I need to curb the snacks and walk more, but its so hard to get motivated when your body hurts.
Only like 10 from pre-preg weight, but also puked every day the first 8-10 weeks and don't think I weighed myself much right after that super-fun period since LO was so tiny still I didn't expect much gain, plus was overweight pre-pregnancy and I know those of us in that boat don't always/really aren't supposed to put on as much...
I'm up 6 lbs at 31 weeks with twins. I was at a healthy weight before pregnancy and not gaining was concerning to me at first. My Dr said as long as the babies are growing then that's all that matters. My last pregnant I gained 8 lb total and my son was born at 8 lb 13 oz. I eat NONSTOP though.. I just have a weird pregnancy body I guess. I'm not one of those people who typically has a high metabolism either.
29 weeks tomorrow, and doctor claims I've only gained 19 lbs since my 13wk appt which is when they apparently started the clock. By my own measurements, I started at 142, and I'm 167 now. So 25 lbs. I'm hoping not to go over 30-35, I gained 40 with M and definitely don't want to go over that.
My doctor uses my week 12 weight as my starting weight and I’m up 3 lbs. (but still down 2lbs from my September annual appointment weight) I started at a higher weight so we are happy with this amount. Based on conversation with my OB I expect to gain around 10 lbs more before my EDD-I am hoping to stay under 15 for the whole pregnancy but at this point I’m just trying to keep walking and not indulging too much.
I love how how everyone is different, it’s like everyone’s bumps.
I still have 3 lbs to go to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm up 10 from where I was at my lowest at the end of the first trimester. The OB office said my goal was 11-20 lbs gain for the whole thing, and I think they count from the lowest point in the pregnancy. So I'm right on track with that goal. And SUPER proud of this!
That was great, @indulgentgypsy!! And so true. Weight gain is such a random barometer and mommas are literally all over the map. Blood pressure, baby’s growth and GD (but even that is suspect when you think about it) are the markers we should use.
Last pregnancy I gained 40 lbs and only lost 20 before getting KU again. So far, at 31 weeks, I’ve only gained 16 lbs. I feel good about that, but I also feel like I’ve gained a lot more.
@mamahmh2 I'm right there with you! Weighed in at 36lb gain at my 30 week appointment and Dr. flagged it for me as "concerning" and sent me to a dietitian (I also know their starting point when I was 8 weeks along already included a 10lb gain from pre-pregnancy baseline, but I have not shared that with them). I was of the BMI class that should only gain between 25-35 for the whole pregnancy. I have been cutting calories and cutting carb intake, and increasing walking to try to stabilize. It was really depressing to get that news and see "excess weight gain during pregnancy" as my diagnosis. I worry about baby not getting enough food with these changes, but the Dr. also scared me by saying too big of a baby could = c-section. So I am following along with my diet plan for now. Hang in there mama! You ARE NOT alone.
I am a c-section mama no matter what because my hips do not widen enough for my big headed babies to come through the pelvis into the birth canal. If fucking c-sections are the big worry for weight gain then fuck it.
I'm in denial, but pretty sure I'm approaching 40lbs. Which is just awful. I've been working out but have really let my sugar cravings take the lead. I'm trying to get it back in check, but I should probably get on the scale if I'm serious about that.
@erynpdx +1 on sugar cravings! My first post here was SO 2nd Tri...I had cut back all my sugar intake for a couple of months.
Then suddenly in the last week my sugar cravings are like “I’m going to die if I don’t get my blood sugar up with something processed and fit for a five-year-old!”
I feel possessed! Then the ecstasy of cold almond milk chasing cookies...or with cereal...I’m like a crazy troll! 😂 I think it’s stress-related, too- like I just need something to feel good and wake me up. Work stress and insomnia...hope these snacks aren’t going to do me in...😳
I am still two pounds down from my pre-pregnancy weight. I started out a few pounds overweight, lost over ten in my first trimester due to morning sickness and my OB is not concerned! I'm sorry your MD is giving you crap for your weight gain!
As long as you and baby are healthy don't worry so much about weight gain. Eat right do light exercise if you can and just try and enjoy the pregnancy glow (aka sweat from the hot summer weather)
With my first I only gained a total of 19 lbs. So far I'm up 20 with 8 more weeks to gain weight. I did start out about 10 lbs lighter the second time around than the first though so I'm expected to gain more this time due to the change in my starting BMI. However I noticed now that the weather is nice I'm more active and eating somewhat healthier which has made me feel better about myself and this pregnancy and much less concerned with weight. I hope you start feeling that same boost of confidence too
As of my appointment last night I've gained 32lbs. And that's with guessing my pre pregnancy weight because I'm not completely sure where I was. I'm trying not to feel too bad about it but I'm scared with over 8 weeks left how much more I'll gain. The midwife didnt say anything about my weight so hopefully that means they aren't too concerned...
