I saw on the news yesterday and while having known about these for some time, I did learn that once you break out and actually see that you have chicken pox, you are no longer contagious so it's all pointless. I admit to having taken Ty to these a few times when he was little. No wonder he ever got them. Well, not until he was 10 and it was the case to end all cases too!!
Re: Your thoughts on the chicken pox parties
It makes me think of the episode of South Park where the parents do that. One of the kids got really sick and had to be put in the hospital. What the kids did to their parents when they found out about it was disgusting.
well, you are contagious once you realize you have them. once they're all scabbed over you're no longer contagious. but while new ones are forming you still are.
i think that chicken pox parties now would be incredibly stupid given that there is a vaccine which is much safer than getting the chicken pox themselves. i can actually see the logic pre-vaccine because they tend to be much worse in adults and can cause pregnancy complications, etc - so it's better to get it as a child if you assume you're going to have to get it eventually. likewise i suppose if there weren't a rubella vaccine. a rubella party as a kid (typically a mild disease) could be better than the risk of developing it as a pregnant woman and having a baby with severe birth defects. i'm just glad we have wonderful vaccines now to save us from the rock/hard place decisions like that.
ps. it's beyond incredibly rare to get the chicken pox twice as pp mentioned. most often one of the cases was something that appeared a great deal like chicken pox but was some sort of other viral exanthem or something.
