Re: Babywearing Discussion

  • I really wanted to babywear with DS, but it just didn’t work out with him because of his medical equipment and size.  I tried sooooo many options lol.  I have a baby k’tan, a Lillebaby all seasons SSC, a standard Tula, and an Infantino Mei Tai sash.  I went to baby wearing groups.  The one that actually worked the best for us was the Infantino.  With the soft structured carriers (SSC), I found that having a short torso made it difficult and I felt like I was getting swallowed up.  The Infantino gave me more options of where to tie the straps, and it’s a smaller carrier overall.

I’m hoping things are easier this time around and I can get to try all the things!

  • We used a ring sling with DS when he was younger and I liked the idea of it, but he never wanted to stay in it for very long. We were also given a second-hand Moby which I used a few times and had its uses, but again he didn’t like it for long periods.

After he was old enough to support himself, we got a hip carrier (specifically TushBaby) and still use that for outings like the zoo where he wants to walk a lot but also needs to be lifted often to see things. It’s super easy to just lift him on and off and is much easier than supporting his full weight unassisted.

I’m hoping this baby likes the ring sling better, I’d really like to use it more, especially since I’ll be chasing a toddler around this time too.
  • @CapricaAndrea I tried a ring sling at one of the babywearing groups, and I was way more complicated than I was expecting.  Like you, I do like the idea of it, though 😂 I haven’t heard of the TushBaby.  Is it one of those carriers that has kind of a seat on it?

  • @SpongeWorthy yeah, it’s a belt with a seat built in. It was a kickstarter that I saw and bought before realizing that hip carriers are actually a thing and I could have bought another brand without waiting for it, but it’s actualy pretty useful. It’s got a bunch of pockets built into it too so we actually have wipes and a couple diapers in it at all times which saves us from worrying about a diaper bag additionally.

My first son was having no such thing as a carrier.
With my second, I really really liked the Infantino as well. Very versatile and comfortable. Could've been a bit easier, but it helped sooo much with errands and airport with 2 babies.

I always wanted to try the wrap like carriers, I'll prob get one for the fun of it this time as well.
  • I wore my daughter. She was a very fussy baby with lots of GI issues so she never wanted to be put down. I had a sling that I didn't really care for, a wrap that I never felt comfortable with, but then I got a JJ Cole "wrap" which was AMAZING for newborn stage, and then we also have a lillybaby and a tula. My husband would wear her around the house and out as well.
  • I used the Moby wrap a lot with DS when he was really little, and absolutely loved it.  Super great for when he was fussy and I needed to get stuff done - he always calmed right down when I was wearing him.  As he got bigger it didn't feel super secure to me because he twisted around a lot. I switched to a Mei Tai that I made from a pattern online (I wanted to pick my fabric!) and it worked out really well - much sturdier. He's 17mo/28lb and could probably still use it, but we don't because he's so mobile at this point. It's easier to use a stroller so he can get out some.

With DS I wore him often. When he was first born I liked the k’tan or my catbird. I’m short so both worked out really well. Once he got older I moved to the ergo 360 mesh. I used it when DS was just 1 at Disney. He weighed 25lb at the time and was able to carry him around through the park. Now that he’s 2 if we need to put him in the ergo my husband will wear him on his back. With this new baby I might add a wrap to the mix for those first couple months.
  • Ooh, I love this topic! Before I had my son I had no idea that baby wearing was a thing. Now I couldn’t live without it! When he was really little I used a Moby. Then we started using a BabyBjorn one. He was always comfortable in it and it was often more convenient for me as I walk our Golden Retriever on busy city streets with a mixed quality of sidewalks. It was becoming uncomfortable as he got bigger so we recently upgraded to a toddler sling. We got an Izmi-they have a baby one too that I might get to wear both babies on occasion.  I was able to comfortably wear a 25lb+ 16mo on a three hour strenuous hike this past weekend. It was amazing!

If you can find a local group they often have different types you can try. I was able to borrow one for a small fee to make sure I liked it before purchasing!
  • Oh yes, babywearing is life!! Especially for those who are becoming STM+. I have too many carriers to count, and legit use them all. My husband even has his own carrier.

  • @nsquaredlife13 do you have any favorites to recommend?
  • @nsquaredlife13 Sammmme. My husband thinks I’m nuts because I want new ones for this baby.

My favorite for newborns was my Solly wrap, and ring sling (check out Wildbird ones ❤️❤️❤️). I use my ring slings almost exclusively after about 3 months. I also have a Ergo that I use with my toddlers when we would be in NYC (we lived close) and taking subway.

On my want/need list this time is a Sakura Bloom onbuhimo carrier and a new Solly.
  • I wore both of my daughters pretty consistently. I really enjoyed the whole babywearing "thing," including meetups and swapping/trying new carriers. I don't anticipate being so heavily involved this time as I work full time and I know what I like and what works. There is a learning curve, for sure, but it was worth it for us.

I wore my daughter all the time until it wasn’t comfortable anymore.  I used a baby bjorn, it was great!  I’m definitely going to wear baby #2 also.  It’s good to have them so close to your heart, and it’s kind of exercise for you, too!
  • First time mom here. I like the idea of baby wearing, but dont know which one I should look into/register for. Im already chest-heavy without the baby, so I need somethig that will be supportive & not put more pressure on my upper/mid back. What are your recommendations?

I used the Lillebaby Complete All Seasons with my DS and really liked it! I like that it can be used from infants to toddlers without any specific add-ons and can be used I think up to 6 different ways. It is adjustable enough that DH and I have both been able to use it too.
  • Suggestions on wraps? I’m not wanting to spend a ton and plan on wearing at home to get chores done. Maybe on a grocery run. I didn’t wear ds so those might be ridiculous expectations. Help lol!
  • I'm similar to @ladybird_ladybird. I LOVE the Solly wrap for babies. Its the best for newborn to 6 months + . I have a wildbird sling that I use for quick trips. Its linen and I wish I had tried bamboo. It's not my favorite but I do like it. I have a TULA free to grow that I loved with my last because of how easy the size can go from newborn to toddler without an insert. I usually use this for longer trips like Disney because of the easy on and off.  I have an ergo that we use for my toddler aged kiddos that i still love. It seems to fit my body better than my tula. I acquired a lille baby recently so I havent had much time to use it yet but as of now I don't like it as much as my ergo and tula. I've also owned a moby and infantino mei tei and didn't like them at all. My husband has a hip seat carrier but I prefer the more structured ones. I also bought a tula woven wrap that I just can't seem to get on right. So It seems i have a carrier addiction 😅 I'm happy to answer any questions!
  • My suggestion for anyone who isn't sure what kind of carrier to get is to find a local babywearing group and learn about/try a bunch of different options. It's really hard to make suggestions because a lot of it is personal preference/body structure. And honestly, a lot of it ends up being baby preference too. Some kids love facing inwards and snuggling and some will hate it because they want to be able to see the world around them.
  • @ladybird_ladybird I want to try a Happy Baby Carrier and the Sakura Onhubimo too.

  • @nsquaredlife13 do you have any favorites to recommend?
Oh yes!! But honestly they're such a personal preference for most people.

For the brand new squish phase, I prefer a solly wrap. They're super lightweight and stretchy, but you get the best little snuggles with your new baby. And they have the prettiest colors and prints!

I also love my Tula Tencel Ring Sling -- granted I bought it years ago with my first baby, and I'm not sure I would still buy Tula RS today since they were bought by Ergo. BUT a really good Ring Sling is a must have (for me). Wildbird makes gorgeous slings, and they have a series of Modal Slings which I hear are very dreamy and soft.

As far as buckle carriers, Tula's Free To Grow is hands down my favorite. You can use it with your newborn starting at about 7 or 8 lbs WITHOUT the need for an insert. It's pretty much the same as an Ergo 360 but cuter prints and I feel it's slightly more comfortable. And the Tula FTG will grow with you and your baby -- my 27lb 2.5 year old still fits in our FTG.

Baby Wearing International has a really great resource for carriers. You can also look into your local BWI Chapter for a lending library to try different ones before you buy!

  • I plan on baby wearing. I have a friend who makes the wraps and slings look effortless... but I am afraid I am not coordinated enough to get it in the right position. When she wraps up her babe she looks so graceful and skilled. I think I might just go with a carrier, even though I love the look and feel of the slings and wraps.
  • Has anyone tried the Tuck and Bundle brand of wraps for newborns?
  • @CapricaAndrea I got a ring sling and was so excited about it but I could never figure it out😭 we used the moby with DS (great in the winter). We tried to use the moby with DD but since she was born in warmer months it was just too hot!
  • @agrhicks Oh, the Moby is definitely too warm for the summer. Ring slings definitely take some practice, I only really figured it out because I went to a local babywearing group and had someone help me out. Even then, DS kept trying to straighten his legs so his bum was never really hammock-ed the way it should be

  • PSA: If anyone is looking to grab a Solly Wrap (AMAZING for Newborns and the first few months) you can use code FORTHELOVE to get 10% off your order! Not sure when it expires but I just used it to order the new Magnolia Wrap.  <3
