Dog Behavioral Changes During Pregnancy?

Hi!  So, I’m almost 37 weeks pregnant.  For the past 2 weeks my almost 7 yr old dog (lab/black mouth curr/husky mix) has been growing more and more aggressive towards other dogs and humans.  He has also been slowly becoming less obedient.  He has literally NEVER shown signs of aggression AT ALL towards humans.  He has only been aggressive towards dogs if provoked, & it’s only been aggressive growling/barking, never biting/lunging/attacking.

However, he has been extremely aggressive towards other dogs and has been in 2 dog fights (Once with a random dog at the dog park and once with a friend’s dog, whom he had been around often before).  He has been extra barky/growly towards strangers & today he tried to attack a delivery man while we were in our front yard 😭  Luckily, no dogs or humans have been hurt!  He is totally fine with our cat and anyone who is inside our house (including strangers).  He seems to only act up if we’re outside anywhere, or visiting other people’s homes.

But, I was curious to know if anyone else’s dogs have been aggressive/protective towards the end of their pregnancies?  If so, did your dog’s behavior continue after the baby was born, or did it stop?

We obviously can’t say for sure if this is what’s causing his behavioral changes, but we’ve had him since he was a puppy; so it just seems like odd timing for him to suddenly change his behavior like this without reason or warning.

Re: Dog Behavioral Changes During Pregnancy?

  • I have a pitbull whose behavior hasn't changed one little bit. He is normally "overly friendly"/borderline aggressive with other dogs and good with all people. I think he is completely oblivious to my pregnancy.

Are you able to take him to the vet at this point? Could be something internally causing the change.

  • My guy who's 9 never seemed to notice my growing gut with my first and it's the same this time around. He's still goofy and loves other people and dogs. I might suggest bringing him to the vet just to make sure. Something similar happened to my cousin's dog, he ended up biting twoa people, including our grandmother. Turns out he had cancer that traveled to his brain. My guy was recently diagnosed with cancer so we're trying to be super vigilant about his behaviour. Not trying to scare you, just cover all your bases.
  • Oh my goodness, that never even crossed my mind!  We’ve been working more intensively on his training & trying to exercise him more often.  It seems to be working so far.  But if the behavior starts up again, we’ll certainly get him checked out at the vet, just to be safe.  Thanks for the advice!
  • Like I said I'm not trying to scare you at all! But it'll be a big change for everyone including fur baby when human baby arrives, best to make sure everything is good and even get some insight on avoiding jealousy between doggo and baby :)
