Thought of this today while driving to lunch. Definitely filed under "stories I'll tell my daughter someday," especially if/when she has a hair disaster of her own. Remember how in the late 2000s it was trendy to dye the top half of your hair bleach blonde and the bottom half black? (And how did everyone think this looked cute and not skunkish?) I liked the two-toned hair idea but knew I couldn't pull off the contrast, so I came up with the idea of leaving the top half of my hair my natural dark blonde and dyeing the bottom half bright red. I first dyed it in the dorm and ended up with this. Every time I saw my reflection, all I could think was "ketchup and mustard."
I asked my mom to re-dye it over winter break and the red came out much brighter. She took a pic from behind and I posted it on Facebook telling people to "ignore my greasy hair." Never mind that it looks like my skull is bleeding...
And now we know why amber blonde with fire truck red is not a thing.
I’ve never dyed my hair, but I remember the “white eye liner” trend when I was in middle school. I think it was the first time I was allowed to wear make up, so it was a big deal. I’m soooo glad that look faded. Haha. I don’t think I could pull it off now being so blonde and so fair skinned.
All my pictures from summer camp when I was 12 (so... 1998?) feature me wearing blue eyeshadow. Like, dark blue eyeshadow. That's it - no other makeup. I can't imagine why my parents ever let me leave the house like that... but I think I've gotten rid of all the pictures by now.
@jenniferjoy37 yes! I bet white eyeliner looks sharp on dark skin, but on pale skin it looks more like some kind of eyelid infection @foodislove I had this drug store eyeshadow palette in middle school and my favorite shade was the dark blue one >.< how did we not think we looked like clowns?
So honestly even my freaky hair colors have worked well for me, and besides using to high a bleach combined with bad water causing breakage, my hair is pretty awesome.
I have made some... questionable fashion choices though...
My most memorable - picture it (because the actual pictures have been destroyed). My hair was muddy golden blonde/brown (before I started dying it) and spiral permed (mom's idea, NOT MINE) I wore BIG hoop earrings (this would be 1988 or 1989?) My height of fashion choice for my yearbook picture in 6th grade was a neon pink t-shirt With (wait for it) a LIME green black polka dotted skirt, with green and black polka dot suspenders.
I mean if this skirt had suspenders it would be dead on!
I wore these together. Many times. It was one of my favorite outfits that year. It was... not a good look
I won't even talk about the black leather pants with the white satin corset printed with gold dragons I wore the first time I went out clubbing with DH because I maintain that I looked hella sexy in that.
I've made some bad hair mistakes.. I bleached my hair (professionally) my natural color is a light brownish color. I went platinum white/blonde. I'm very fair skinned with lots of red undertones, so when I bleached my hair my skin pretty much made me look like a tomato. And then at some point I put in red extensions with this bleached hair.. it was a hot mess, looked like a candy cane. Then my hair started to break so I stopped bleaching, but had to add extensions into my hair because it was so broken. I've always had really long hair, down past the middle of my back and most of it snapped after the bleaching.
As far as fashion mistakes.. lets just account for everything I wore in middle school...
I colored my hair for the first time right before I went to cosmetology school. I went dark. Well, I decided that I wanted to be blonde again.
Back story- my instructor was a male. He was very inappropriate towards me, was a compulsive liar, and just straight up crazy. Lol He had a crush on me (I never entertained it) and all of the sudden when he found out I was pregnant started hating me and yelling at me for no reason in front of everyone.
Well he used my hair as a “model” for the class. I had just enrolled in school so I had no idea what was going on. He bleached my entire head then put YELLOW TONER in it. Like literally straight up yellow. I was pissed my hair was bright yellow. Grrrrrr lol
Idk you guys. I have zero fashion sense. I actually wanted daughters so they could theoretically help dress me. Turns out the apples don't fall far from the tree so now we have 4 gals in my family in need of a stylist. Send help.
The early 90s were probably the worst for me. Flannels, corduroys, long sleeve Ts under short sleeve concert Ts. No makeup. All the girls had burgundy hair, myself included.
OMG. This is traumatic for me... my first haircut when I went to school in Italy. I cried for 2 days because of this haircut. It was AWFUL. The hairdresser gave me this terrible Eurotrash shag. I asked for 2cm cut off all over... and I got this:
I hated it. It looked AWFUL on me. I wore my hair in a ponytail for the rest of the summer. The worst part was that I didn't own a blowdryer, so I couldn't really style it. And I wasn't about to pack a blow dryer around with me everywhere. It had grown out enough two months later that it was tolerable.
Haha these stories are great and make me feel better about some of my bad decisions. The worst was I decided to box dye my hair “dark” about 2 weeks before my senior photos. Oh my god, I ended up with basically jet black hair. Totally Elvira. And I’m super fair-skinned with a reddish undertone. It looked horrible. So I went to get highlights to soften it... even worse. Highlights came out super blonde and I looked like I was going grey. My mom saved the day with some spray-in highlights (came in an aerosol can 😂😂) but they softened it up enough for the photos. She wanted to kill me. Now looking back, I would’ve wanted to kill me too.
My freshman year, in the one weekend my mom was out of town, I decided to go for it with a box of black hair dye. I was fairly upset about the outcome so naturally I followed it up with a trip to Supercuts for a super awesome mushroom cut. 🙇🏻♀️
Hahaha. I dyed my hair really dark once (It doesn't look bad on my because my natural color is almost dark, it is just gray undertone, so I dyed it really dark to get rid of the gray tone.) Well, it was about a week before we were going to travel to GA for Thanksgiving and my stepmom was NOT having it. She took me to her stylist and "took care of it". I was also barred from coloring my hair on my own ever again. Worked out well for me...
I also dyed my hair medium brown in college because I was sick of having a natural hair color that didn't have real name! (Although in French I believe the term would be "chatain.") It wasn't terrible, just a little *intense*... @CBeanz I went to a kids resale event last month and found a maternity top that was a white long-sleeve shirt with a red t-shirt sewn over it. I was tempted to buy it just for the throwback
When it comes to 2000s makeup for me, two words: gold lipstick. I wore that stuff every day in ninth grade. I probably looked like a robot And I definitely smelled like a cross between Tommy Girl and Love Spell!

And Im naturally a dark brunette. I once went platinum blonde.... and it wasn’t the right choice.
And too much of black, intense, too much eyeliner in junior high and part of high school.
