Pregnant after IF

For IVF mommas, how close to your due date did you give birth?

Hey ladies ! I’m a first time mom-to-be through IVF, on my 3rd trimester (almost 30wks) and I have a bit of anxiety wondering when I will go into labor. Mostly because I want my immediate family (mom, dad and 2 siblings) to be in town for our baby’s birth but they live out of the country (about a 4.5hr flight). We’re having a little boy and he will be my parent’s first grandchild so we are all very excited :) At the moment , they are planning to be in town about 8 days prior to my due date (7/7), just in case he comes early. I am very low risk and it’s my first delivery so technically there’s more chances of him being born after his due date. However, after talking to many friends, a lot of them went into labor several days before their EDD !! All of these friends got pregnant naturally so I wonder if that’s why their due date was way off to begin with. Since most of us here know the exact date when our embabies were transferred/implanted, I feel like our due dates should be more accurate. So, would like to hear some of your experiences from the IVF mommas that have given birth already or if it’s someone you know too ! I feel like it will give me a little peace of mind to help plan the trip for my family. Thank you for you help !!

Re: For IVF mommas, how close to your due date did you give birth?

  • I’ve only delivered baby once, so I’m no expert on this. But even with IVF where we know the exact age of the embryo, the actual date of delivery can vary, just like in naturally conceived pregnancies. I delivered mine at 38 weeks and 2 days. I’ve seen fellow moms on the PAIF board deliver as early as 34 weeks, and a few delivered after 40 weeks following induction. I remember reading somewhere that when your mom delivered is a better indication of when you are likely to deliver.

  • @cashewchicken wow thanks for your response ! That all makes sense, I will check with my Mom , I was her only natural delivery but that was so long ago I hope she remembers the exact # of weeks gestation lol
  • I was born pre-term at 36 weeks and I had a feeling throughout my whole pregnancy that my little girl would come early as well. I joke that we're both impatient! She was delivered early due to pre-eclampsia at 35 weeks and a few days -- she did great and went home with me a few days later, no nursery time needed.

  • optimisticmrsk - my son was IVF and he came at exactly 37 weeks. I had a lot of extenuating circumstances though. My work is really stressful at year end which is when he was due, we were in the middle of trying to close on a new home build that was already 2 months delayed and we were trying to pack our apartment. I had some signs a few days prior as I was already dilated to 2 cm on Monday and I lost my mucus plug on Tuesday, went into labor Tuesday night and baby was born Wed night. My family all lived out of state and were all planning on being here for the birth. This time around is IVF again and I'm at 32 weeks. Baby is great, all of my vitals are great and my stress level is much lower. I have a c-section scheduled for right about 39w 3d. That being said, babies have a mind of their own and you kind of have to be prepared for anything.

I would imagine your OB will be keeping a close eye on you in the next few weeks. I would go over those concerns for sure. If for some reason your little one does come before your family is here, my best advice would be to just enjoy the extra bonding time you will get as a family of 3 bc you will never get that time back. In some ways sharing it with just your husband, you and the baby could be a really special time for the 3 of you. That's how I felt at least.
