    Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:

GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year?
Christmas - its a season not just a day,  one of only a few times a year we see family,  and im Christian so the meaning behind it is very joyful and exciting

  • @BigBadWolf12 thanks! It was really lovely. I'm happy to be back here. Not looking forward to going back to work on Monday...

How far along are you? How big is baby? 23+1, grapefruit
How old is/are you other kid(s)?
    3 and 1.5
Nails and fails from this week:
Nail: spent 5 days at my parents, and managed to balance taking advantage of the babysitting and resting with helping my mom cook for the holiday, and then clean up after. The last few holidays I always felt like I was kind of useless, so it's nice that I'm learning to help and keep the kids happy away from home.
Fail: my husband has had to work extra long hours recently, and is exhausted, and I am not being as understanding as I should be.
    Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:
Holidays are great, and fun, but not very relaxing, I'm going to go to work on Monday after a week off, and everyone is going to expect me to be well rested. (Also, none of them have kids, so even if it was a "real" vacation, I doubt I would be well rested, and none of them would understand that.)
GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year?
I feel like every holiday season I think that one is the best. Each has things that make it hard, and things that make it nice. Since Passover just ended, that's going to win. It's usually nice weather, and it's a lot of fun to see all the family.

    DD, age 2

Nails and fails from this week:
Nail - went to the library and picked out some early reader books for DD, and she’s reading at least one of them all on her own. I’m a proud mama.
Fail - I’m really slowing down a lot. I figure I’m measuring around 30 to 31 weeks, so it makes sense, but then I remember I’m actually only 23 weeks...and I still have a long way to go.

    Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:
My parents are on vacation (and they really don’t travel a lot) and my grandmother broke her hip. So she’s in the hospital, had surgery...and no one is around for another week. If I wasn’t pregnant with twins and also a stay-at-home mom to a toddler I would jump on a plane in an instant...but for the moment I’m being told to stay put. I’m feeling guilty that I live so far away and can’t be around to help out.

GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year? It used to be Christmas, and I still love the Christmas season, but the day itself has become so stressful. So my new favorite holiday has become Mother’s Day. I know it’s kind of a “Hallmark holiday” but it’s one of two days a year I hand all parenting responsibility over to DH, guilt-free. I also get to pick everything we do - which always includes brunch at a fantastic local restaurant (and when I’m not pregnant, bottomless mimosas). Plus the weather in mid-May is warm enough to be pleasant but usually not unbearably hot.

Nails and fails from this week:
My son has been a little crabby this week because he's getting all of his molars at once :(  I feel bad for him, and I'm trying to remember that he's not being difficult on purpose!  We went had friends over for a fire Friday night and that was a lot of fun!

    Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:
GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year?
I love the Christmas season and getting together with family.  It can definitely be stressful, but I try not to get too wrapped into the stress, and just enjoy it.  I also love 4th of July with my husband's family.  We go up to my in law's cabin and all of my husband's siblings and their kids come up for a few days and it's just super fun.

@aecm I'm sorry about your Grandmother, but I think staying put is the right decision.

How far along are you? How big is baby? 26+2 Butternut Squash

How old is/are you other kid(s)? Daughter 22 months

Nails and fails from this week:Nail- my daughter has my curly hair and I found her this detangler spray for the mornings that works so well.  Fail- I cannot get healthy and I want to cry

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: I feel like there is so much to get done in the next 14ish weeks and I really need to get on it.

GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year? I equally love Christmas and Fourth of July.

  • @aecm - What books did you pick up? I'm trying to introduce sight words to DD1 (she'll be 3 in 2 months) and DH isn't helping because he thinks it's "too advanced" despite me explaining the theory, etc.

How far along are you? How big is baby? 24w3d; Cantaloupe and weighs as much as an NBA basketball
How old is/are you other kid(s)? DD1 is 2 months shy of 3, so ... 34 months (I tell the world she's "2.5+" - math is hard for most)
Nails and fails from this week: Nail - We're seeing fewer tantrums from DD1 (I know they're about to ramp up :| ) and I'm hoping it continues; however, the screeching is about to drive me batty. / Fail - I have been really bad with water this past week and I vow to get back on-track.
Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: Dear Diary: I thought we had *finally* settled on a name, but DH has relented and offered back my original preferred name, so I'm considering it, even though he did it was an "I really don't care at this point, name her whichever you feel like" comment. I had come around to our "new" name, but DD1 still refuses to give up the original name - which was the origination of the ICD comment. So now I'm torn because I just love the flow of the original, but know he really prefers the new one - even though the middle name (which we did settle on) doesn't work quite as well. Ugh. Trivial in the scheme of it all, but I was really hoping to have this whole thing put to bed by now.

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday of the year? I have ALWAYS been a huge fan of St. Patrick's Day (even got married on that day!), but Halloween is a close second. Given my strong connection with my family's Irish heritage, Samhain has always been a fun celebration (even though we're all Catholic/practicing Catholics) and DD1 has a natural LOVE for all things Halloween (her 5th word was "Spider" - we put up huge, lifelike spiders in the house that time of year - and 6th word was "Spooky").

Nails and fails from this week: fail: I have been sick so I have done barely anything for a week. Also I was up almost all night so once DD was on the bus I set an alarm and took a power nap before getting DS to school. Alarm ended up setting for tomorrow and DS slept in so I woke up 15 minutes after school started. No school for him today.
    Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:
GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year? I love Thanksgiving because it is the one time my moms whole family gets together, usually 40ish people. I love that the focus is on family, food and thankfulness instead of gifts. Christmas is nice but always comes with so much drama and stress.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: DD has been so good this past week. Just loving it.

GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year? Growing up I was never much of a holiday person, but now that I have a kid, I love Christmas followed second by Halloween. Holidays with kids feels like the magic is back that I remember from childhood and they are so fun and special.

  • @MamaK225 - Are you sure DD1 isn't MY DD1? My first born also LOVES Halloween and all things spooky.  The best part is that she says spooky with a Southern accent, even though neither me nor DH have one.  I LOVE IT.

How far along are you? How big is baby? 23w2d (how the hell did that happen??), grapefruit

How old is/are you other kid(s)? Two daughters, 5 and 2

Nails and fails from this week: DD1 is clearly getting sick, she's acting exactly as she does when she is about to have a virus.  Her immune system is actually pretty stellar - she'll probably only be down for a day or so - but as she starts getting sick, she wrecks havoc on us by have a lot of meltdowns.  DD2 is trying to drop her nap (ha, little one, you are not going to win this one) so this weekend was rough!!

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: I desperately needed to quit my job and like, it's ultimately a good thing that I did, but starting over at a new job while also pregnant has been one of the hardest things I've ever done in my professional career.

GTKY: what is your favorite holiday of the year? Can I say all of them? DD1 LOVES holidays, its so amazing.  My parents and DH's parents were terrible about tradition so we've worked really hard to have some standing transitions in our home, and they mean so much to DD1. She also loves to embrace holidays of other cultures - she's SO into Dia de los Muertos and she's particularly obsessed with Hanukkah (she is a self taught dreidel player).

  • I do have to say Halloween has become a favorite of mine! It is fun dressing my kids up in cute costumes and seeing their excitement. Halloween brings about a lot of fun events for school and the community too! We do not get trick or treaters at our house so we go to a friend's house in the neighborhood behind us. Dads fill to go cups with beer and take the kiddos house to house while moms drink wine and hand out candy. We have a lot of friends in that neighborhood so we always see many familiar faces...so much fun!

@MamaK225 - DH started introducing flash cards of the preschool-level Dolch sight word right after DD turned 2 and I thought he was NUTS. Turns out I was the crazy one, b/c she picked up on them SO fast. And she looooves learning new ones. Fast-forward 2 months and she’s working on the 2nd grade list 😳. So we picked up some BOB books - the library has the sets split up so we can pick out books with words she knows. The two she can read so far are “Play Ball” and “The Big Hat.” There are proper names, but other than those every word in the books has been covered on the sight words list!

Ladies - did any of you have gestational diabetes with previous pregnancies? What is your doctor's protocol with testing in this pregnancy?

I had GD last time that had to be controlled with medication.  We tested against around 16 or 18 weeks because I swore I was reacting to sugary/carby things.  Blood sugar was normal.   But then on days like today, I swear I have it (it was really clear to me last time around I did - I had all the tell-tale signs).  Just interested in your experiences/opinions.  I have an appointment next week and I'm debating having them test again (I think they were going to wait to test again at 28 weeks rather than 24).

I love the Christmas season, but I think my favorite it Halloween.
  • @peachy0709 - She very well could be! She *also* has this Southern accent that neither me (neutral - military brat with NE roots) nor DH (neutral - Wyoming born/raised) have. Her "mama" is approximately 51 syllables long and so damn cute.

@aecm - Good to know! I think I'm going to start with some of them this weekend (we bought a set that has 5x100 for pre-school, K, 1, 2, 3). I mean, she already recognizes her name from others (first and last) so I feel like she's got the potential.
