We're all either at or nearly at the 1/2 way point of our pregnancies. Let's compare notes on where we've come / what we still have to do for this pregnancy. Below are a few items I'm curious about:
-Bought baby furniture?
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
-Stocking up on baby items?
-Choose a pediatrician?
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
-Signed up for prenatal classes
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
-Toured your hospital?
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off?
Re: GTKY 4/19 Comparing Notes
So far I've bought a nursery glider and feel like I have my registry in good shape... aaannnddd that's about it
-Bought baby furniture? N/A, we're reusing what we have from our son. When its time to make the crib transition we will need to buy a bed for him. I can tell you with my son, we had ordered the crib by this point and picked out a dresser, stroller / bassinet
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? N/A my parents watch the babies! woohoo
-Stocking up on baby items? I started that around this time last time. So far, nothing. We dont need much though, just diapers really
-Choose a pediatrician? Using the same one. This was something I did not do until the 3rd trimester last time. I asked my OB if she had anyone she recommended, then I researched those and met with my top choice.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) I've started it. I likely wont have it finished until around 30 weeks.
-Signed up for prenatal classes No, but I've looked at dates on the infant CPR class. Highly recommend taking one! We did last time, but want to refresh. We took all classes in the early 3rd trimester.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? Yes. We've been burned by insurance before so my H is a stickler. Basically, once I got pregnant we discussed with my OB their cost and then chatted with the insurance. Also look into circumcision coverage if that's something you're planning on. Breastpump as well. With my insurance I can't order it until 30 days out. This is where my spread sheet comes in handy...must find it.
-Toured your hospital? So fun! Do whenever you feel like, I think we did towards the end of the 2nd trimester. Our hospital just got remodeled, so I may do it again, but not till the 3rd trimester.
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off? 2nd child syndrome, I've really not done much. I do keep a weekly pregnancy log and photos as I love looking back on that. Because we're Team Green, its kind of easy to not buy clothes yet, but it means I have a swaddle blanket addiction. We have names picked, unless we change our mind. Possibly this weekend I'll sort the nursery and make half the dresser my sons and the other half for baby.
Still need to pick our double stroller, but I'm holding off until my H feels like spending $$$, lol. I'll need to get a bassinet, which I'm researching, but wont buy until after my shower (IF someone chooses to throw me one that is). I'll sanitize the bottles and what not once we get closer.
Some things I did last time, that may help. I need to redo some of these:
- Cleared out a cabinet in the kitchen for baby. Bottom shelf had little drawers for nipples, pacis, syringes, and utensils. 2nd shelf held all the bottles. 3rd shelf was anything we didn't need yet like plates and cups.
- Made breastfeeding baskets for my main 3 hang out places. Our bedroom, living room, and loft (adjacent to nursery). These contained chapstick, hand cream, a hair tie/ clip, nipple cream, nursing pads, a paci, burp rag, and snacks.
-Made bathroom baskets for my main 2 bathrooms. These had pads, peri bottle (get from hospital), tucks pads
-Made diaper baskets in the 3 main areas. Diapers, wipes, diaper creme (use all those samples you get), a paci, changing mat, spare onesie.
- Moved all chemicals and breakables to top shelves. aka, start baby proofing now if you have the energy. It's easier to get it started than when you have a baby running about.
1st Baby 5/12/17, Henry
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? We already have a slot secured at the daycare DS goes to. I put our name on the list when I was about 6 weeks along and it's good that I did because they filled up fast due to other kids in the daycare having siblings around the same time that I am due!
-Stocking up on baby items? I've gotten some blankets, one outfit, a Ring Sling and a Tula FTG.
-Choose a pediatrician? Will be using the same as DS' since we love her!
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)? I haven't started one yet, but will just for the completion discount. I'm sure we'll have a couple things bought off of it, but no shower since this is our second.
-Signed up for prenatal classes? We're not doing those this time since we did the first go-round. I found them decently helpful, but honestly got more info from my first BMB that I utilized daily.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? Yep! We'll be paying about $4K since that's my out of pocket max. I'm not thrilled about that amount, but compared to the $8K+ we spent for me to have DS, I will take it!
-Toured your hospital? We're going to be using the same hospital as last time. Not only is it a great hospital, but they are connected to my OB office so it's super convenient!
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off? Putting off pretty much everything big until after the AS. Once that is done then I plan on buying some clothes, getting furniture ordered and cleaning up the nursery to prep it. I plan on getting a Baby Brezza, new bassinet, bouncer and possibly a new pack n play. I also think I'm going to move the closet organizer stuff from DS' room to the new LO's room since we don't use it quite as much for his stuff and I can away with the dresser more. Closet organization is HUGE for me with an infant though. They have so much stuff and it's just easier having it all in little compartments, drawers, etc. in the closet for easy access.

-Bought baby furniture? Not yet. All I need is a dresser for DS2, which I've yet to buy.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? Done and done. DS1 is transferring to new school in August, which is where DS2 will go, too.
-Stocking up on baby items? I'll get a bunch of diapers this summer. Otherwise, nothing to buy.
-Choose a pediatrician? Done and done - using DS1's.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) N/A. Two baby boys within 2 years means no shower and no registry for me!
-Signed up for prenatal classes Might do a sibling class. Not redoing all the others.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? Good idea! Need to do this. What do you ask/tell the hospital? Is it a negotiation or just them committing to a set price so you're not surprised after the fact?
-Toured your hospital? Nope. Using a new hospital this time, so I should get this scheduled!
We have a dresser I need to repurpose of my step grandmothers, but that’s it. I have a crib picked out but haven’t pulled the trigger.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
I’m really hoping to stick with the daycare we currently use as we love them, but I will be getting more info Monday about the daycare DS will get bussed to after preschool. We might switch out of convenience.
-Stocking up on baby items?
So far we have a 100pack or newborn diapers, a giant container of formula, and a bulk box of 2k wipes.
-Choose a pediatrician?
We will be sticking with our current pedi!
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
I have started one on amazon just for the completion discount, but don’t plan on sharing it with anyone.
-Signed up for prenatal classes
We are skipping classes. We didn’t do them last time either, and I honestly feel like I get everything I need to know from the internet
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
Out out of pocket max is 5k, but my employer reimburses for the last 3k, so we are looking at a 2k total.
-Toured your hospital?
Ive already delivered there once, so nope!
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off?
Honestly, I’m putting everything off until after my AS on May 9th. We had no genetic testing and don’t know what we are having so I just am proceeding with caution. I feel so disconnected with this baby
nope. But we’re using the crib that DS is currently using as a full-size bed. We need to get him a new headboard.
I think we got the crib and dresser around 24 weeks with my first. They were on sale with a free mattress
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
We put him on the waitlist for DS’s Daycare.
DS didn’t go to daycare until he was 9 months so we didn’t have to do this with him. Luckily when we needed sudden care our daycare had one spot open.
-Stocking up on baby items?
Bought a box of NB diapers that were on clearance. I do want to get more diapers when they’re on sale, preferably at Target when then run the gift card deals
-Choose a pediatrician?
nope
didnt pick one with DS until we had him. Ha. Unintentional, he came earlier than he was supposed to.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
started one.
I think we did it around 20 weeks with DS. After we knew the sex
-Signed up for prenatal classes
dont plan on doing any.
Didn’t with my first.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
they went over it at my first appointment 🤮
-Toured your hospital?
Dont plan on it since I work there.
Went around 34 weeks with DS.
@nda_roxybabe I love that you had a spreadsheet. Spreadsheets are my spirit animal 😆.
-Bought baby furniture? We have the crib, dresser/changing table, and bassinet so far. There’s a glider I’m eyeing and will probably buy in a couple weeks.
-Schools/Childcare: just toured our final choice daycare today. We’re going to do 3 days a week and my dad is going to come the other two.
-Stocking up on baby items? *plugs ears* lalalalala I can’t hear youuuuu!
-Pediatrician: not yet, but we do have to have one picked before delivery (hospital policy). I’ve been waiting until after the a/s.
-Registry: I’ve started one, but won’t make it public until my aunt sends out shower invitations.
-Prenatal classes: no, and I’m not sure I’m going to.
-Delivery fees: just had to sign a paper saying we’ll pay $600 to the OB before week 32 to cover any leftover delivery charges. We’ll get it back if it ends up being unnecessary.
-Toured your hospital? We’re scheduled for a tour sometime in July, I think.
No need, just have to kick DS out of it. I have DS’s “big kid” bed and dresser all picked out so now I just have to order them online. I suppose he’ll need sheets also...and we need to get some rugs, but I have those both picked out also.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
I *might* look at another school or two, but if not then I’ll just be waiting until we can reserve a spot at the one we picked out (they will only reserve spots 60 days out).
-Stocking up on baby items?
Amazon prime, baby! No need to! We’ll get some Up&Up NB diapers when we get closer to D day.
-Choose a pediatrician?
Will use DS’s doctor. We ❤️ them!!
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
Need to delete my Amazon one from DS then start over with some basics (more towels, swaddles and wash cloths prolly).
-Signed up for prenatal classes
Been there, done that. The sibling classes are for kids aged 4-12 at our hospital so we can’t take DS. 😢
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
Doctor is a global rate and I already have the rate we’ll need to pay. Hospital is a crapshoot and we won’t know how much to pay until after delivery.
-Toured your hospital?
Might tour it again in 3rd tri, but prolly not.
I’m feeling more zen about all this stuff second time around. Any other STMs feeling that way???
Bought baby furniture?
My sister gave us her crib as her youngest recently transitioned to a toddler bed so we have that set up! Our house is pretty small so will probably keep baby furniture to a minimum if possible.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
This one is really stressing me out and feel like I need to get something figured out soon! Done online research and asking around but don't know many people with young kids in our area to get recommendations from. Still need to tour places. All daycare options make me a little nervous and hoping I can find something I feel comfortable with!
-Stocking up on baby items?
Nope, trying to wait until after the baby shower to see what we all get!
-Choose a pediatrician?
Not yet, plan on asking my midwife for recommendations at my next appointment.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
Started a registry but have like 1 thing on it so far, I got overwhelmed by all the things🤣 I have my AS on Monday and finding out baby's sex that day so once I know if we are having a boy or girl I think that will help me with my registry decisions on certain things 😀
-Signed up for prenatal classes
I haven't but am intersted!
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
I think so? Not sure if there are other things I need to ask but my DH talked to our insurance company and our out of pocket max is 4k so planning on paying that.
-Toured your hospital?
Not yet but definitely will be!
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? I am a SAHM so not necessary.
-Stocking up on baby items? Yes. I bought some clothes but not a ton bc I have a lot of DD's stuff. I have some wipes and diapers.
-Choose a pediatrician? We will still use our current one.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) Yes. Just Target. I have a few things I may add.
-Signed up for prenatal classes Nope. Baby #3 so.... plus I need a RCS.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? We have decent insurance so I'm not too worried. We did a payment plan before and likely will again.
-Toured your hospital? No. I will be delivering in the same hospital as before.
Furniture- waiting til we move into our new house to get it but I have an idea on what I like
Childcare- I decided I will be staying home for the year with my kiddos
registry- I haven’t made one yet because I’d like to go into the store to do it. Haven’t gotten to it yet to get in there. Our DS is 19 months so we don’t need much but I’d still like to make a registry to have a list of everything we need in one place.
Stocking up: we stocked up on diapers last pregnancy. We didn’t have to buy our first box of diapers until our son was 13 months since we stocked up! We’ll do the same again once we move.
Pedi- using the same as DS. As a suggestion I suggest an office with multiple doctors or locations. Better chance of getting seen ASAP if baby is sick.
Hospital tour: I did one with DS so we aren’t doing it again but I definitely recommend touring the hospital sooner than later. You could find you hate it/ they don’t offer what you want and you could end up wanting to switch hospitals. Better to know that now.
prenatal class: did one with DS. I did it mainly to learn about the medicines the doctor would be bringing up so I wouldn’t have to put much thought into it in the moment. It was very helpful to know what they were talking about ahead of time. During labor making decisions is the last thing you want to think about... you just want the baby out haha
insurance- I haven’t called to get info for this pregnancy. We had different insurance with our DS and barely paid anything out of pocket. This time around I feel like we’ll be paying more but I’m not calling lol. That would be just one more thing to stress about. The bill has to be paid either way so whatever is my mentality haha
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? Done. Baby is in the waitlist for mid-December, although we might push it to January.
-Stocking up on baby items? I bought some crib sheets and a pack n play at Shopko's store closing sale. That is it so far.
-Choose a pediatrician? Yikes. No. I haven't even thought about this at all.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) I've started an Amazon registry. I won't finish it until closer to my shower. Several things are already not available, so I have a feeling it will be a constant work in progress.
-Signed up for prenatal classes. I havent signed up yet, but I know I want to do a breastfeeding class. I'm not sure if I'll do any others.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? I guess. We just know our out of pocket max and have that in savings.
-Toured your hospital? Not yet, but I need to soonish because I need to pick what hospital I want. My OB delivers at two and they are both good as far as NICU care, specialists available, etc. So it is more about the vibe.
Has anyone talked to HR at work yet? Like my boss knows I'm pregnant, but I feel like I need to have a conversation with HR too. Is it too soon for that?
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? Already told our daycare. With DS1 we toured at exactly 20 weeks. Daycare sports fill up FAST-TOUR NOW!!!!
-Stocking up on baby items? Nothing yet. Waited until we knew the sex for our first LO.
-Choose a pediatrician? Will be the same as DS1. chose at birth with our first.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)-Will for once we know the sex. Not having a shower or sprinkle or anything, just want the completion discount.
-Signed up for prenatal classes-We did as soon as possible because our hospital is small and they don’t offer often. I would suggest doing them if possible in third tri.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? I am a veteran so I worked out my VA benefits and so there are not any fees to pay!
-Toured your hospital? Did so right away because we wanted to make sure we did prenatal appointments with the right clinics.
Talked to HR-Yes because we want to figure out pay and benefits and such. Told my boss at like 7 weeks because my job is tough and she needed time to prepare and hopefully ask the powers that be (government job) for a temp position to fill. (@kgg2241)

Interviewing schools / childcare options? We found a daycare we like and put our name down right away (there was only 1 spot left for Jan). I am still trying to get ahold of a neighbor that has a daycare out of her home. I don't think she would work out but I just want to know what her prices are. I've never talked to her before but found her information online (@diner04 try parentaware.org). We'll see if she calls me back.
Stocking up on baby items? I've only bought a few onesies that I thought were cute. Everything else I'm going to hold off on to see what we get from the showers (unless there's something big that I haven't thought of that I should order ahead of time?).
Choose a pediatrician? Haven't even started looking. I'm sure we'll stick with someone in the same clinic I go to.
Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) I've started registries at both Target and Buy Buy Baby. They're not complete yet, actually they're kind of a mess at the moment. I've been adding a couple different brands of the same item to the list just so I can come back later and make my final decision. I also want to start an Amazon registry but haven't yet. I'm hoping that merging these into babylist will be easy?
Signed up for prenatal classes? Haven't signed up yet but plan to. MH is already CPR certified through work and I've been certified in the past but it's been a while. I definitely want to take a refresher.
Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? I have amazing insurance. Everything pregnancy related is 100% covered. The only thing I had to pay for was the copays for my initial intake appointments to "verify pregnancy." ETA: I feel the need to clarify. The labor and delivery and hospital stay is 100% covered after deductible but our deductible is only $200. I think we've already hit that with all the fertility treatment at the beginning of the year.
Toured your hospital? We will be but I don't think it will change our minds about anything.
@kgg2241 I had to tell my supervisor right away when I found out I was KU since I work around hazardous chemicals. I think the same day he told our HR. I'm not sure if that was only because of the chemicals or if that's just standard. It's possible your supervisor may have already told them for you. If not, I definitely don't think it's too soon.

Bought baby furniture?
We have the crib and mattress (not set up yet), we have an old dresser that we are in the process of refinishing, and I have an old rocking chair I plan to use in the baby's room. Still need a little table for beside the chair, and an ottoman of some sort. I think that is all we are going for.
Interviewing schools / childcare options?
Haven't even begun. We live in a small town and I don't forsee too many problems in finding someone. They are all in home, and our neighbour really recommends the woman they use. I am hoping to not need childcare daily. My DH will be home every other week, and I am hoping to start my own business and do that on the weeks my DH is home. We aren't in a rush to plan, as we have a year mat leave in Canada. (Sorry, to the majority of you. You're struggles are ones I cannot even imagine.)
Stocking up on baby items?
We are getting almost everything from my SIL. They are done having kids and have one of each. So we have all the clothes we will ever need for both genders. We got their bassinet, and a Mamaroo, and will get their swing as well. We need some smaller items like wash clothes, towels, teething toys, etc. But we have really lucked out with the amount of stuff we are borrowing from family. I also have chosen to try cloth diapering and managed to get a huge haul second hand, but I still need a diaper pail. I will start stocking up on wipes as I see sales.
Choose a pediatrician?
Not yet.
Finished (or started) your registry?
I have started one on Amazon. Mostly to keep track of all the things that I come across or people recommend. I'll fine tune it closer to the end of pregnancy and if people ask if we need anything I'll refer them to this. Plus discounts are always useful.
Signed up for prenatal classes?
I signed us up for one. I need to look into some other ones my midwife recommended to me yet.
Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
Again, as I am in Canada I don't have to worry about this. We are not guaranteed a private room in my city, so I will request one when I am admitted and may have to pay a little bit for that upgrade.
Toured your hospital?
Not yet. But will be doing so in the third tri. We are currently in the process of opening our new children's hospital and my due date is on the cusp of them opening. So I have to prepare to deliver in the old hospital and the new one. FX for the new one!
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off?
I started making a list of things we need, but how do you ever know you have it all?! Haha I am hoping by going to this sale this weekend I will see everything and it will help me figure it all out. Plus I am taking my SIL (as DH is away working) and she will have some good insights.

Have the crib, dresser and glider from DD and we bought an ikea closet organizer and put it in a couple months ago.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options?
We use a home daycare for DD and I’ll be taking a year off but she said she will take back both kids when I go back to work! She’s amazing and I’m so glad we have her.
-Stocking up on baby items?
Car seat, pack and play, stroller, bouncer seat, high chair and toys will be what we used with DD
We will probably buy some boy clothes in newborn/0-3 month size because we are waiting to find out!
And I do want to buy a good carrier this time around. Maybe an ergo or Tula?
-Choose a pediatrician?
Same doc as DD
Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one)
Wasn’t really thinking about it but may look into the completion discount you are talking about.
-Signed up for prenatal classes
We went in our third trimester with DD and found them quite helpful.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor?
We don’t have to worry about this in Canada.
@kaceyallan nice to know there is a fellow Canadian here!
-Toured your hospital?
Will be using the same hospital as DD so won’t need to do this again.
Anything else you've already done?
Just ordered a couple big sister books and a new backpack diaper bag from amazon! Now waiting for them to come.
What are putting off?
Going through clothes and toys in our crawl space. I really don’t want to but probably should sooner rather than later.
Possibly car shopping but we may be able to get this car to last a couple more years.
Researching and purchasing a decent breast pump and a new monitor as ours doesn’t charge properly now.
This is a great thread. I was feeling like I haven’t done much but after going through this list is checks off quite a few things!

-Bought baby furniture? No - I have a crib and bassinet from our last two that we'll 'reuse' - and by reuse, I mean use for the first time, as my children tend to be a major sidepiece.. likely self-induced. My 2YO literally never slept in her crib. Not one time. But I am also a baby-hog.
-Interviewing schools / childcare options? Yes, though is somewhat coincidental as I'm looking for a center for my 2YO to start ASAP. If we find one, and love it, we will consider this LO attending as well. I'm not entirely sure what my plan will be, though. TW***
-Stocking up on baby items? Here and there. We have let the older kids pick out a few items when we've been out shopping - mostly sleep sacks, swaddle blankets, bath towels. I got the bottles I want to use/try, and we'll start stocking up on diapers over the next couple months. My last two spent the first 6-8 weeks in premie, so I'll definitely have atleast a pack of those on hand.
-Choose a pediatrician? Yes, we love our pedi and will be sticking with the same one we use for our others.
-Finished (or started) your registry (if you're having one) - I have a very detailed list in Excel (down to brand and pattern of even the silly things) and have added most of the list into an Amazon registry for the completion discount and to watch for sales. If anyone asks for it, I'll give it to them, but don't plan to spam anyone with it and am not expecting a shower or other 'party' this time around.
-Signed up for prenatal classes - No, I don't think we'll be taking any, though I may look into a Bradley class or other 'natural labor technique' class if I can find one.
-Worked out delivery fees with hospital / doctor? Yes, we recently decided to move from traditional care to home birth with a midwife so fees are a big part of it and very explicitly stated and agreed upon.
-Toured your hospital? My hospital room will be in my living room, so I'm all familiar there.
Anything else you've already done? What are putting off? Just trying to chip things off the list little by little so that it's not such a big bulk of expenses at the end. I have a tendency to want to just buy ALL THE THINGS, RIGHT THIS SECOND though.
