Diapering 🚼

Some of the advice I've read recently is that it's a great idea to begin building your diaper stockpile early so that you are ready when the baby arrives and so it isn't such a massive expense all at once. Hopefully this thread can be used to share diapering methods (cloth vs. disposable) as well as any advice from STM+ for those who will be having their first baby as well as those with questions regarding methods/tips/etc.

I realize none of us are even halfway through our pregnancy yet, but for those of us who are hoping to prepare ourselves for what's to come, feel free to post below!

Re: Diapering 🚼

  • My biggest questions are for those who cloth diaper: how do you know how many to buy and what brand(s) and style(s) do you prefer?

  • I would suggest having a “diaper door raffle” for your baby shower. That’s what I did. Every person who entered with a pack of diapers got a raffle ticket and was put into a drawing of a prize. I just made the prize with a yankee candle, some chocolates and a $25 visa gift card. You’d be surprised how many people came with a box of diapers, I didn’t have to buy my own for a few months.
Also, for all the FTM’s... every single time your newborn eats, they poop. It’s inevitable. So, think about your baby eating every 2-3 hours in a day, that’s about 12 times a day... that’s 12 diapers just for poop. Lol, you could use up to 300 diapers a month.

Depends on the style. Recommendation is for roughly 3 days worth (2 days and then a 3rd for wash days). Buy 2-3 in different styles. Not all will be to your preference or fit your kid. A newborn will not fit in one size diapers until roughly 10-12 lbs (depends on leg chunk).

We use a mix of All in 2s (AI2) and all in ones (AIO). An AI2 is where you replace an inner liner each time and only the cover as necessary. We use these at home. AIOs work like a disposable, you use them once and drop them in the bin for washing. These are what we send to daycare. We use smart bottoms (AIO) and best bottoms (AI2) for brands. For the newborn stage, blueberry newborn AIO worked best for us with DS2. We used econobum nb covers and bamboo flats for DS1, but they didn’t fit DS2 well.

Not all diapers work for all babies or even for babies in the same family so keep that in mind when deciding what you want to try

  • Watch for diaper sales.  Target has good stock up sales where you spend $100 and get a $20 gift card back or spend $75 and you get a $15 gift card back.  Cartwheel usually has coupons too.  I have found that by the time we get thru the stock we bought, another sale happens too.
  • Also, I know most Walmarts do this (my dad works at Walmart), as long as the diaper style/brand is in their system, you can exchange an unopened box of diapers or wipes at the store. You can do up to 3 exchanges without receipts if you just plain don't need a brand, but if you want to exchange say Pampers snug and dry for parents choice size 3s(I've done this several times 😂) they take the box and out the amount on a gift card and then you can buy them! I exchanged so many diapers for other sizes or brands cause my son was allergic to Pampers, my daughter got bad butt rash with Huggies and thats all anyone buys you I swear 😂 I kinda want to try the target brand of diapers this time around. We usually stick to parents choice cause they're soft and cheaper and easy for us to get at Walmart(we live in a tiny Town with a dollar general and just got a new grocery store 😂 so when I get off work I usually go grocery shopping in town) but I kinda wanna try the target one's out!

  • @meagan-t what @cmbt2 said for cloth diapers. I tried a few styles out but ended up having a pretty easy to fit baby. I loved rumparooz and nicki diapers the best, although the rumparooz covers were the first my (admittedly larger than average) baby grew out. The overnight Kawaii pockets were the ones that fit up until my toddler potty trained at 2 1/2. If they hadn’t potty trained as smoothly and early as they did, I definitely would’ve needed extender tabs (I was thiiiiis close to ordering them lol, it was pretty close)

I ended up going the cheapest route for cloth diapers, which for us was using flour sack towels(target has then $4 for a 4 pack) and receiving blankets (somehow we ended up with a crapton, and diapers were he only use I found for them. A lot of folks love them for burp clothes but I had a freaky miracle baby that spit up literally less than a handful of times their whole babyhood). We’d use the fst and receiving blankets as the absorbent part of a cloth diaper and either use a diaper cover or a pocket diaper to keep it all secured and leak proof.

I used a kite fold for the sleep diapers with an extra fat pad folded in the crotch region. (The Internet is your friend with fold techniques, but those two were my go to). I would fold them up fresh from the laundry and we never had a problem. Oh and bonus for using flats (fst and receiving blankets) they’re way easier to get clean and faster to dry than AiO. The flip side is just more time spent prepping/folding them.

For this baby baby I want to splurge on some newborn AIOs but I’ll mostly be doing covers and flats like last time.

On disposables- same holds true. Just because one kid does best in Pampers, doesn’t mean your next one will. Buy a small pack of each brand. See what they like or tolerate best. Save the big boxes for once you know- you can exchange unopened boxes without receipts if you know where they came from.

Weights on disposables mean nothing. Really, they don’t. You go by fit and leaks/blowouts. My 7lb kid wore preemie diapers for 3 weeks before he could properly fit in a newborn sized diaper. I know 9 lb-ers that came home wearing size 1s. If you’re having tons of leaks or blow outs, it’s time to go up a size

They go through lots of diapers in the beginning, but also go through sizes fast. Pooping mid-feed is a common newborn characteristic, but it subsides after a few weeks.

For night time, once you hit the ability to fill out a size 1, you can buy size 3 overnights to get out of MOTN changes. It’s okay for disposables to be larger on baby, but not so much for cloth. Don’t assume a diaper that says some variety of “lasts 12 hours” is acceptable for overnight; they don’t last- there are dedicated overnight disposables.

If your kid cries the second they pee their diaper, try a different brand. My kids did this in pampers but are fine with huggies

I was coming here to say almost all of this. I stop changing MOTN pee as soon as possible. I also do everything in the dark and don’t make MOTN eye contact. Anything for a few extra zzzzz’s!

We did a mix of disposable and cloth with my first. Disposable overnight and at daycare 3 days a week and cloth the rest of the time. We started once she fit in regular size. The newborn ones we had leaked and I just needed the ease of disposable that early. We exclusively used bum genius organic AIOs and I loved them!

Try to stash as many hospital diapers as you can to take home. While you are at it pack all the mesh panties and other things that make you comfy postpartum.

Just be careful there. My DS had a bacterial infection that became a large rash his first week home because he's allergic to Pampers and that's all our hospital uses. It took a week and a half to realize what happened, his Dr wasn't even sure cause I had Pampers at home too. We switched to Huggies then parents choice. With my DD I took the diapers home and gave them to my SIL for my niece that's 8 months younger!

Not diaper advice but diapering ..

Boy moms, push the penis down!!! If you don't they will pee up and soak everything.

Omg. Yes! For the first week of DS1’s life, DH did the majority of changes. I couldn’t figure out why he kept going through clothes, and when I asked, sure enough, he wasn’t pointing the penis down 😂

Eh, I wouldn’t use the term comfy for those. It’s going to be a personal preference thing, same with the giant maxi pads they give you (I bring my own because the hospital ones are awful)

as for the diapers, if you have a larger baby, the hospital ones may not even fit your kid so don’t plan on scoring a bunch.

  • If you are interested in cloth there is a Facebook group called Fluff Love and CD Science that is really helpful. They also have a website that is helpful as well. I recommend researching and purchasing a few different kinds to find what works best for your baby and you. Look into second-hand options if you want to save $$, or think about selling ones that don’t work out. What you like best may not be what you think. I didn’t think I’d like pockets, but I really liked them once we started solids. My favorites by far are cotton prefolds and covers followed by pockets (which I stuff with old prefolds) for daycare and on the go. Reason I didn’t end up caring for AIOs is DS outgrew and outwetted them faster than any others and I didn’t like spraying 💩 off their flaps.

Yes different kids react to different diapers. This is a good warning to consider swapping brands or moving to a brand with less crap in it if your baby has consistent redness or rash.

  • So many negative nancies about diapers. 😂

Just take a ton of diapers home. You’ll thank me when your newborn poops in a fresh diaper over and over and you blow through 4 of them in one change.  Better safe than sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

DH and I would laugh so hard. DD2 would immediately poop the SECOND we would close her clean diaper. Then we would wait, change her  again, and she would do it again. 😂

@alinic916 both of mine peed in their faces the first day. Baby boys tend to get erections right before they pee. He may even be born with one; one of mine was, but I forget which one.

  • I stocked up any time I saw a good deal while I was pregnant with #1. I didn't have to buy a single box of diapers until DD was like 15 months old! Definitely recommend keeping an eye out for deals and don't be afraid to buy a bunch. You will need them.

  • @cmbt2 I didn't have blow out issues til they were older, solids made both my kids blow out 😂😂😂 as itty bitty, they were both pretty good. As for baby boy erections and peeing on themselves, my DS startled himself and cried one morning peeing on himself cause I didn't tuck.🤦🏽‍♀️ My SO was like point that thing down. I didn't know, there's no boys in any of my close cousins or family😂 we're all girls 😂😂😂

I tried getting into the cloth groove with DD2 but just couldn't be bothered with the washing. Still kept the diapers and am optimistic about this time around. The penis pointing comments made me crack up! Things I wasn't thinking about when this baby comes along ;)
