Some of the advice I've read recently is that it's a great idea to begin building your diaper stockpile early so that you are ready when the baby arrives and so it isn't such a massive expense all at once. Hopefully this thread can be used to share diapering methods (cloth vs. disposable) as well as any advice from STM+ for those who will be having their first baby as well as those with questions regarding methods/tips/etc.
I realize none of us are even halfway through our pregnancy yet, but for those of us who are hoping to prepare ourselves for what's to come, feel free to post below!
Re: Diapering 🚼
Also, for all the FTM’s... every single time your newborn eats, they poop. It’s inevitable. So, think about your baby eating every 2-3 hours in a day, that’s about 12 times a day... that’s 12 diapers just for poop. Lol, you could use up to 300 diapers a month.
We use a mix of All in 2s (AI2) and all in ones (AIO). An AI2 is where you replace an inner liner each time and only the cover as necessary. We use these at home. AIOs work like a disposable, you use them once and drop them in the bin for washing. These are what we send to daycare. We use smart bottoms (AIO) and best bottoms (AI2) for brands. For the newborn stage, blueberry newborn AIO worked best for us with DS2. We used econobum nb covers and bamboo flats for DS1, but they didn’t fit DS2 well.
Not all diapers work for all babies or even for babies in the same family so keep that in mind when deciding what you want to try

Weights on disposables mean nothing. Really, they don’t. You go by fit and leaks/blowouts. My 7lb kid wore preemie diapers for 3 weeks before he could properly fit in a newborn sized diaper. I know 9 lb-ers that came home wearing size 1s. If you’re having tons of leaks or blow outs, it’s time to go up a size
They go through lots of diapers in the beginning, but also go through sizes fast. Pooping mid-feed is a common newborn characteristic, but it subsides after a few weeks.
For night time, once you hit the ability to fill out a size 1, you can buy size 3 overnights to get out of MOTN changes. It’s okay for disposables to be larger on baby, but not so much for cloth. Don’t assume a diaper that says some variety of “lasts 12 hours” is acceptable for overnight; they don’t last- there are dedicated overnight disposables.
If your kid cries the second they pee their diaper, try a different brand. My kids did this in pampers but are fine with huggies

I ended up going the cheapest route for cloth diapers, which for us was using flour sack towels(target has then $4 for a 4 pack) and receiving blankets (somehow we ended up with a crapton, and diapers were he only use I found for them. A lot of folks love them for burp clothes but I had a freaky miracle baby that spit up literally less than a handful of times their whole babyhood). We’d use the fst and receiving blankets as the absorbent part of a cloth diaper and either use a diaper cover or a pocket diaper to keep it all secured and leak proof.
I used a kite fold for the sleep diapers with an extra fat pad folded in the crotch region. (The Internet is your friend with fold techniques, but those two were my go to). I would fold them up fresh from the laundry and we never had a problem. Oh and bonus for using flats (fst and receiving blankets) they’re way easier to get clean and faster to dry than AiO. The flip side is just more time spent prepping/folding them.
For this baby baby I want to splurge on some newborn AIOs but I’ll mostly be doing covers and flats like last time.
Try to stash as many hospital diapers as you can to take home. While you are at it pack all the mesh panties and other things that make you comfy postpartum.

Boy moms, push the penis down!!! If you don't they will pee up and soak everything.
Also +1 to not changing pee MOTN if possible and always in dark!!

as for the diapers, if you have a larger baby, the hospital ones may not even fit your kid so don’t plan on scoring a bunch.

I even asked for some extra mesh underwear and hooha spray.
Just take a ton of diapers home. You’ll thank me when your newborn poops in a fresh diaper over and over and you blow through 4 of them in one change. Better safe than sorry 🤷🏻♀️

I sent it it to my friend who responded. The pee doesn’t seem so bad after you get pooped on a few times! This is definitely going to be a learning experience!
