Low Progesterone

My husband and I had passed the 1 year mark for TTC, so doctor ordered a blood test. Came back showing I had low progesterone levels. I was schedule to meet with the doctor to get a prescription next week, but I got a positive test on Saturday! When I called on Monday to let them know, they cancelled that appointment saying I didn't need the prescription since I convinced, and scheduled a new appointment for the following week for my initial check up with the nurse.

My question... Can't low progesterone levels lead to a miscarriage? Should I still be on a prescription if my levels were low around ovulation? This is my first pregnancy and I don't know anyone that's gone through something similar, so I'd love ANY advice you can offer.

Re: Low Progesterone

  • I had low progesterone levels with my last baby (he’s totally fine! 1.5 and lots of trouble lol). They found out when I did my initial bloodwork to confirm the pregnancy. I was put on a progesterone supplement until twelve weeks.

This time I was nervous I’d be low again so I went in at 4 weeks for blood work and expressed concerns. They sent info over to the lab for next day results to be safe. They are fine but that peace of mind is totally worth it. Maybe ask your OB to move your first appointment up if it’s still a few weeks off?

  • I would call your OB and ask to go get your blood done ASAP and include a progesterone level. Theoretically since you ovulated you should have that progesterone increase but I go by better safe than sorry. If they won’t do it you can always switch to a new OB, it’s much easier to do that at this stage.
  • I just had my second  round of blood work in three days. My doctor  has started  me on progesterone. Unfortunately  I only had a call from the nurse  that the doctor  wanted me to start. No real explanation.  You can have blood work done at labcorp with same day results. Good luck.

I had really low progesterone at the beginning of my pregnancy (like, less than what is should be after you've ovulated low) and was put on a supplement at 5 weeks until I was 13 weeks. I can't say if it kept me from miscarrying, but it definitely didn't hurt! I'm 18 weeks now. I would ask that they check that level ASAP just to be safe. Good luck!

I too suffer from low progesterone and have had a couple of miscarriages.  This time around I was pre-prescribed two suppositories twice a day and estrogen twice a day as well so as soon as I received a positive result I could start them,  they had me on both of those meds till I was 12 weeks.  Maybe because I as seeing a fertility Dr. their protocol is different.  I am now 28 weeks. I would call the dr. and try and get an appointment ASAP to be on the safe side.
  • I didn't have low progesterone levels and my doctor still put me on progesterone to help prevent miscarriage. It might depend on the individual doctor but if you are worried about it you should reach out to your provider to ask.
