Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler and newborn--stroller? Did you use one?

DS will be 23 months when DC#2 is born...should I bother with a double stroller?  What did/are you doing?

Re: Toddler and newborn--stroller? Did you use one?

  • I got a sit n'stand.  Mine was 27ish months when DD was born.  He was almost done with the stroller, but likes the sit n'stand.

I didn't get it until the baby was out of the carrier, though.  Until then, I just used the snap'n'go and made him walk holding onto it (she was born in December, I don't think we went many places just the 3 of us for awhile - and if DH came, then we used both strollers).  You never know - you may sling the baby and push the toddler - or push the baby and have the toddler walk.  There are lots of options.  I didn't want to buy a stroller and a good baby carrier, but I ended up getting both (got an ergo too - good for the playground when you don't just want to leave the baby sitting on the sidelines in a stroller while you "spot" your toddler).

I'm using it less and less though - and just putting the baby (who's one, so not so much a baby anymore) in the single Maclaren and he walks.  It's still good for mall trips by myself when I need a little containment - and if he does walk, it's good for coat/bag storage :)

  • depends on your needs. dd was 19m/o. we lived in IL at the time.  we knew we were moving the next spring/summer... so I waited.  I would walk every day at the park. I would put ds in the hotsling or bjorn and dd in the jogger and stroll.  When we'd go to the mall, dd walked and ds went in the stroller. if she threw a fit or we had to dart out, I'd put dd in the hotsling as a hipsling so I could move faster.  Had we stayed there or moved somewhere else, I may have gotten the baby jogger double stroller b/c I walk a lot. but we moved to nyc, so I got the phil & ted sport buggy, narrower, super easy to maneauver (esp in crowds), light for a double, easy breezy.  If you do a ton of shopping, the basket space won't be great for when someone is sitting in the rear seat. I usually have space for the diaper bag and maybe one or two small bags. dd usually walks when we shop, but if she gets tired, she sits back there.

The other option is the joovy caboose... it's a sit & stand type stroller. there was a newer version highlighted on a blog recently. it allows for an infant seat to be snapped into the back (which is where the toddler would normally sit or stand) while the toddler sits in the front seat.

really, if you don't jog/walk/shop a ton/or go to festivals a ton.. you could get by without a double.  or if you want a double just in case, get a cheaper model to toss in the back of the car .. a woman recommended a chico one ... it was a side by side and if I remember correctly, was a less expensive stroller.

  • I should add... if you already have an infant carrier... I would recommend waiting until baby is born or nearly there  to determine what your needs are.  your older dc will change so much by then.
  • I used a sling/bjorn until DD#2 was old enough (4-5 mos) to be in the Joovy Caboose that I found on Craigslist.  I love the stroller- only complaint would be that it is a bit heavy.  There is apparently a joovy ultralight out there.  My older DD loved (and still loves) sitting on the big girl seat on the back facing me.
  • Wait until closer to your due date to make your decision.  A lot of the answer depends on your toddler's personality at that time.

    Mine are 17 months apart.

I got a double stroller.  We've barely used it.

If you do get a double I recommend a used one off Craigslist.

In the beginning I wore the baby in a bjorn, moby, or sling with the toddler in the umbrella stroller.

Now we do the sit and stand or the toddler just walks.

If we're going to the zoo or an all day out and walking affair the wagon is our best friend.

GL to you - and congrats on the pregnancy!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I waited until the 2nd was born and took them to the store.  They're 11mo apart.

I hated the front to back ones.  Too big for me.  Too heavy for me.

I hated the side by side because the weight difference made it awkward.  Plus, eventually, one would be out of the stroller or want to walk or I might only have one with me and then I'd need both strollers in my car and that just wasn't happening.

So, I got the Phil & Teds.  I love this thing more than words can say and use it every single time I'm out.  I can use it as a single or a double.  I can fit anywhere.  It's light.

I'm hoping not to need a triple....but, if I decide to get one, I'm looking at the Joovy Big Caboose or the Valco model with the attachment for the toddler to stand.

  • I still use my double stroller and my girls are now 10 months and 2 1/2.  Some places its just easier than useing the 2 umbrella strollers.  I like having the basket for winter coats and the diaper bag and sometimes both girls want to ride.  We use the umbrella strollers a lot now and that is all we took on vacation this past summer but it really depends on where we are going.

  • LOVE my Phil N Ted Sport. #1 is 19.5 months, #2 is 4 weeks old.
  • Due in a few weeks and DS will be 20 months old when DD is born.  We're not doing a double stroller.  I don't see the point since we don't actually use the strollers all the time and DS would rather walk on his own.  I did invest in an Ergo baby carrier though.

We just got the phil and ted sport v2 and I already love it - it is great for dredging through the snow on unplowed sidewalks in downtown chicago.  So I will add the backseat when baby #2 comes in june.
