Heartburn out of control!!!

Tums will suppress it after I've had a meal or snack but it always comes back with a vegance! I basically dread my cravings and next meal because of the acid reflux that follows! I read coconut water helps, so I bought two of the vita coco coconut waters in original as it seems to be the real deal according to google.. Don't see this being any sort of miracle worker though. Also it tastes gross. Going to call my OB tomorrow as it's getting progressively worse. Anyone have any remedies or have been prescribed anything for this? Has it worked? Will literally try almost anything at this point.

Re: Heartburn out of control!!!

  • When I went to the ER they told me to take Mylanta. It’s helped me SO much when I get a flare up. I will wake with the heartburn and reflux pain in the middle of the night.  Take the mylanta and I’m back to sleep in 15 minutes.
They advised that tums really doesn’t help
in this situation. It’s putting a bandaid on an artery.

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy, and I’ve gotten an Rx for Protonix every time. I have trouble with heartburn even when I’m NOT pregnant, and it’s soooo bad when I am. There are several things that it’s safe to take, so definitely ask!
  • My OB has me taking Pepcid now, I told her Tums worked for about 5 minutes. Like @hakele said, Tums are like a bandaid.. I also found not eating as late helps with the reflux. Also seems for me that peanut butter gives me heartburn LOL!

Yesterday I had such bad heartburn/reflux that my chest hurt and I was driving home from the office, I had to take my bra off while driving just to relieve some of the pressure off my chest LOL. Also drinking a glass of milk seems to help me out too.
  • I am taking Zantac 3X a day per my OB and it works-ish. I try to take it every 8 hours, and it works for about 5 hours each time.
  • Everything for me was and is always temporary relief.  Milk products really help me longer than anything else.  Great excuse to indulge in some chocolate milk, ice cream or milk shakes every so often.

I will say with my first I think I had it way worse then I do with this one.  She had the most hair I have ever seen on a baby as a newborn.  So I sort of believe the old wives tale.  Born with a pixie cut.  I believe this baby will have some hair but way less.
  • I joke with my husband that our girl is going to look like teen wolf when she comes out. The heartburn is real with this kid..
  • Thanks for all the help to everyone who responded! My mother, sister and I all have SO much hair, so I definitely wouldn't be surprised if the old wives tale is true 😂. I did end up calling my doctor and she told me zantac is a safe over the counter and that now at 26 weeks tums basically do nothing! Which seemed about right haha. Going to try the zantac tonight when I get out of work. If not I will ask about the other options some of you recommended! Fingers crossed !! 😬🤞🏻🤞🏻
  • OMG @JLHeisler I totally forgot about that old wives tale about the heartburn. If you knew my hubby and me, there is no doubt our child will have a full head of hair. We both have TONS. We always joke about what amazing hair she will have. So maybe that is why my heartburn is SO BAD. LOL.
  • Only ever have pregnancy heartburn. Wicked bad with both boys, both born with a full head of hair. I honestly will be surprised if this LO doesn't already have hair down to her butt when she gets here :)
  • I'm like @indulgentgypsy and only get heartburn in pregnancy. I am currently trying to sleep sitting up it's so bad. It was the same starting around this time with DD...she was pretty bald though...a little bit of fuzz but mostly bald. We'll see if it's the same this time around!
  • My heartburn is insane. I only get it during pregnancy. I had it really bad with my second and he came out with tons of blonde hair. I only had it towards the end with my first and he had very little. I don’t think I’ll get lucky enough to have a little girl with tons of hair though so I’m not even trying to think about it 😂
  • Ive never had heartburn until I got pregnant. I’m hoping it stays a pregnancy only thing! I don’t know how people deal with this on the regular!!
  • Hopefully that is all it will be. It is just because of those relaxin hormones that make your body able to change as your baby grows so quickly. It relaxes muscles so that things can move. But also means the sphincter that closes off your stomach is loosened and leaky.
  • I know I’m going to have major reflux tonight. Ate dinner late and it was chili 🤣🤣

  • I'm sure I've had heartburn before not being pregnant but nothing this constant. I did end up buying and taking the Zantac. It has worked like a miracle so far and is safe in pregnancy. Obviously consult your doctor first but if/when they give you the go, I highly recommend it! Kind of weird but I still have the feeling of acid/sour stomach but no heartburn. Totally eliminated the annoying part, I'll take it!
  • I have had really terrible heartburn throughout this pregnancy, but especially within the last 2 weeks. I missed a day of work and spent a few days working remotely last week because I had heartburn to the point of vomiting. Tums would sort of help for an hour or two but then it would come back with a vengeance. I saw my OB and she gave me a prescription for Ranitidine which I've been taking 2x a day and has been an absolutely lifesaver! Definitely talk with your OB, there's no reason to suffer.
  • At this point, I'm pretty sure this baby will be bald. I always had heartburn with the girls, but I've hardly had any this time! It's ok, I'm ok with bald babies😆
  • So far for me, heartburn has been the single most problematic symptom I have had the whole pregnancy.  It got really bad towards the end of the 1st trimester, so the doctor said I could take Zantac (a.k.a. ranitidine) 2/x a day, 12 hours apart.  I have been doing that, and over the past month, the symptoms started to still come through about 2 hours after I eat anything (doesn't have to be a meal, even a snack), so I suspect it might be getting worse.  I was also told to supplement with Tums if needed, on top of the Zantac, which I do sometimes, but I was worried about taking too much acid neutralizer, because I've heard that can make it worse long term.

This has gotten to the point where I only eat very small meals throughout the day, and just hope for the best.  I also worry I'm not eating enough in general because of all this, but the baby is growing, so hopefully everything is fine.

Hang in there.  I hope your doctor can come up with something that works for you very soon!
  • Also, the hair thing is apparently not an old wives tale... I read that they linked higher levels of the hormone that promotes baby's hair growth to acid reflux symptoms, so it turns out there's some truth to it!
