It can be worn as a backpack, on shoulder, cross-body or carried as a satchel.
I like having lots of extra zip pockets to hold things like pacis, snacks, diaper cream, individually packaged hand/face wipes, etc. I liked that it has a couple side pouches for bottles, a few big zips for wipes and such and a large interior where you can fit a days worth of diapers, change of clothes, and other supplies/gear. And it comes with its own changing pad, which was essential. Everything was extremely easy to clean.
@cindler really, anything can be a diaper bag, although I'd make sure that had an upright beverage pouch on the outside so that if you've got a full bottle or sippy/straw cup you can stow it away on the go. I'd also recommend getting a diaper clutch or two that can be unfolded into a changing pad and can carry an extra diaper in it if you want to just throw it in your purse for quick outing.
I had a ju-ju-be BFF and used the backpack straps. Overall I liked it a lot, definitely a fan of the backpack especially for babywearing - nicely evens out the weight
I think they have expanded their lines to have more gender neutral styles since I had DD....although it never bothered DH to be seen with the diaper bag (maybe European men are different )
@frenchbaby18 This is the one I have and DH carried it everywhere without question. I think the functionality of it never made him even consider that it was a somewhat feminine bag.. I think there are "crystals" on all the zipper pulls too:
I just got this backpack diaper bag off amazon. Currently using it as my toddler bag / commute to from work bag... it's a knock off of the Fawn Design but you'd never know!! I LOOOVE it. I will never go back to an over the shoulder bag. And at $60 they are so affordable. I am tempted to get the brown colour after baby comes...
@mamanbebe I have the same bag in black instead of red and have no complaints. I don’t think they had the true backpack when I got mine or I probably would have gotten that.
@cindler We got a backpack bag for my husband. For him, we made sure it had a spot to keep breastmilk cold so he could easily take milk when he was out with the baby by himself for awhile. If the backpack didn’t have a built in spot I’m sure you could get a separate cooler pouch type thing, but I think it saved space by having it built in. I don’t know if you plan to breastfeed (no judgment either way), but it was something we kept in mind for his diaper bag.
Question for STM+s: After LO was born, how did it change your purse situation? Mine is currently a shoulder bag and I feel like that wouldn't be practical with a baby. Did your diaper bag essentially become your purse? Did your partner have a separate bag?
@hestia14 When LO was young, I would put whatever I needed in the diaper bag so I had one bag. It was my experience that you need things out of the bag more often when they are younger. When I used just one bag I still had a purse that I took to work. I would just move essentials to the diaper bag. As LO got older, I started using a small crossbody bag for me and left the diaper bag in the car. This setup works well for visits to the playground. We each have our own bag. Edited bc words
@hestia14 I used a canvas tote for the most part and I also have a nicer leather one. But after years of lugging around child and bag, it's taken such a toll on my shoulders and back that completely ditched the bag. Now I have a small card holder and I just throw that and keys/phone in a pocket of whatever I'm wearing or a jacket. I will probably either keep doing that.
@hestia14 When baby is very little definitely just one bag. If I go out alone I'd grab a purse that fits my phone, wallet and one lip balm and leave bag with baby. When I went back to work at a year old my son kept the diaper bag/backpack with him at daycare and I used my purse more. On the weekends I still ditch the purse and only use the backpack with our essentials. Even though he's 2.5 I carry snacks and water for both of us, wipes, pull ups. Keep extra clothes in car for possible messes.
We are on diaper bag #3 and it’s from Bag Nation on Amazon. It’s a backpack with an insulated bottle pocket, magnetic close diaper pouch, and wipes pouch that has access from the outside. I will never ever own a non-backback style diaper bag ever again.

Backpack is the way to go! And another vote for Jujube from me...I'm lowkey obsessed. I've had a BRB (more traditional backpack shape) and now I carry a BFF (like the red one shown earlier in this thread). The BRB holds a LOT more, but honestly I like the way the BFF packs more because nothing gets lost in the depths.
There is an ACTIVE b/s/t on FB where you can find great deals. Just don't fall in love with a hard to find print!
I currently have an over the shoulder bay from SkipHop. It has a magnetic closure, and I put so much crap in there I typically can’t close it and it’s problematic. If I decide to get a new one, it may be a backpack. But I plan on possibly tandem carrying DD and new baby, so a backpack may not be too practical. We’ll see!
@hestia14 I kept my purse AND had the diaper bag. Although with 2 kiddos close in age, I may have to rethink this... it’s such a pain in the ass carrying two. I like @mama_bear19 idea of the crossbody purse...
Baby #3 for us and a backpack all the way. I made the mistake of a shoulder one with my first and it was horrible, we bought a backpack shortly after she was born.
I wanted a few more pockets this time around, so I bought a new one. Our first one worked, but with more kids more pockets seemed needed since I end up with their stuff in my purse all the time.
@hestia14 - I'll just throw my wallet and necessities into the diaper bag until I start to need less stuff when I go out. Eventually, I used to just throw a diaper and wipes into my purse.
@hestia14 - the opposite, my purse became the diaper bag I didn't want to carry a second bag, so I'd just slip a couple diapers and travel wipes in my purse. When I needed something more substantial, I just used a regular old backpack.
All great suggestions. I’m +1 for the backpack. We have an inexpensive Carter’s brand athletic backpack (like this style but not the exact model https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZC1EGES/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_R7cLCbRF4ZRGC) its been great and easy to clean. I actually got it at Marshall’s so it was even cheaper. One thing I do look for is the loops that allow you to hook it to a stroller if you are using one. That’s saved my back a couple of times and still left room in the storage area underneath the stroller seat for other things. I also prefer having easy access to my wipes from the outside.
I'm not big on diaper bags and hated the one I got with DD. I mostly just used a cross body cavas purse as my diaper bag. I only carry a small wallet for me anyways so it easily fit everything I needed for DD as well as my own things and still does. I did get a diaper bag for this LO just because I wanted something a bit bigger than my purse, but it's still canvas, cross body (it has a messenger strap), but it has a waterproof interior, change pad, and all the dedicated pockets. This bag will have to serve as purse, diaper bag and DD's bag and DD is constantly needing to take things in an out of my purse (as am I) so I personally prefer the cross body to a backpack style. It's the size of a big purse so not overly big, and it just looks like a purse which I prefer. I'll likely use it as a purse when diapers are no longer needed:)
I’m going with the jujube super be in a gaming print (blizzard Murdocs) because it matches our carrier! With my first two I used a thirty one zip top utility tote. I loved it.
Anyone try or hear if LilyJade? Looking at them for the duribility (all leather, hope to get several years out of it) and because it doesn’t look like a diaper bag just a nice backpack purse. Convertible straps so can be backpack or over shoulder. Removable insert seems like a good idea (?). And comes with changing pad.
I have a crossbody that I've used with my first that I got from Target and it has worked great and is still in pretty good shape. Unfortunately I won't be using it with my second because it gets so heavy that it hurts my shoulder and back. Switching to a backpack style. I've done a lot of research and read reviews and I think I'm going to try the Ruvalino, anyone else heard of it or used one before?
@1stbabe719 - I saw your post a while back and meant to respond! *sigh* I think LJ bags are awesome! I've been on several boards where women were getting fed up with whatever their current bag/brand was and were unanimously re-devoting to LJ! I feel like it's a great investment for something you love that is truly functional.
@1stbabe719 I have also heard amazing things about Lily Jade! Although a friend of mine never used hers because of how much it cost she didn't want to mess it up. Just something to think about if that could be you!
I have a fawn design and also a jujube bff. I started with the jjb but love the look of the fawn so switched to that. My only complaint is the fawn may be a tad small for three kids lol! But otherwise love it!
