The board is a little slow today! Hopefully it's because many of us are out doing something fun! For those of us stuck at work, here's a GTKY to get things moving.
Tell us your proposal story! What happened? Did it wow you? Would you have preferred something different?
I'm going to sit back and prepare for the "awwwws" now.
H and I had been together for about 4 years when he surprised me one day with going to pick out my ring. I knew exactly what I wanted since we'd talked in-depth about getting married in the past and knew it was going to happen at some point. We picked the center diamond together which was super fun! I ended up picking a diamond that has a pretty big inclusion (flaw) in it that isn't as desired by most, but with the jeweler Loupe it looks like a really pretty feather in there and I love it! We bought the ring in Feb of 2012 and he said it would be about 6 months since he had to pay it off.
He ended up paying it off a lot faster and surprised me with an engagement on Cinco De Mayo! We had just gotten back from seeing The Avengers and it was absolutely down pouring outside, but our dog needed to be walked (we lived in an apt at the time). We went outside together because the moon was also supposed to be full that night and look pretty cool. I was freezing and sick of being outside and he kept saying "oh let's go see if we can get a better look over here!" and I was like "ughhhh fiiiine". Little did I know, he was trying to stall and texting with our room mate to get everything set up.
We walked back inside and I noticed our bedroom door was closed which it wasn't usually and I went in first. There were a ton of candles and a bottle of champagne sitting on our nightstand and my mouth instantly dropped open. My H isn't a super romantic guy so it took me by surprise. Then I felt a hand tap me on my shoulder and when I turned around, he was down on one knee looking up at me with the cutest smile. He hadn't said anything so I made the hand gesture like "well, get to it!" lol and he said "Oh yeah! Um, will you marry me?" and I said "Yes, of course I will!". We hugged and kissed and I mentioned how sweaty I was. I was like, profusely sweating. He kissed my forehead and said "Ew, yeah you are super sweaty" so romantic lol. When we hugged again he said, "I can't believe you didn't cry!" and I couldn't believe it either. I am such a crier so he still doesn't let me live it down. He also said "I promise to love you forever, even when I am in a poopy mood" which kills me and he still hates when I bring it up lol. It was adorable and perfect and I wouldn't change a thing.

@zuuls_mom Your story made me tear up and get goosebumps!!! It's perfect!!! I love it when usually non-romantic guys do something over the top like that!! Awww!
H and I had been together for 9 (NINE) years when he finally proposed. I had known I wanted to marry him from almost the beginning of our relationship and he was super committed, too, but apparently was afraid of the formalization. There were obviously a few drunken nights that ended in me bawling about him not loving me because he wasn't sure if he wanted to get married. Although, given that I was 18 when we started dating and we each had college and grad school ahead of us, a lot of the delay was justified. By year 8 I had all but given up and had resigned myself to the fact that we were life partners and weren't getting married (or having children). I decided I loved him enough to sacrifice those things.
Then, in May of 2013, he planned a camping trip for us. I'm the planner and I'm usually tasked with figuring out all of the logistics for our trips, but he wouldn't let me plan anything. That raised a bit of a flag for me, but I was past having hope, lol. We were living the Bay Area at the time and went camping in the Sierra Nevadas with our two dogs (60 and 100lbs). As is par for our camping trips, we went for a big hike on the full day we were up there. H had a mountain peak selected and is an Eagle Scout, so I always defer to him on trail choices. Well, there wasn't a trail to the mountain he wanted to scale. So we bushwhacked. Up a mountain. In 80 degree weather. It was fun, but it was a lot harder than our usual mountain hikes! We didn't make it to the top, but decided to stop at a nice clearing a good way up that had a nice view. H had been getting quieter than usual on the hike and was weird about where to stop, so I started getting suspicious. We sat down on a log and gave the dogs some water. I turned back around from filling their bowl to find H on one knee in front of me! My super quiet, man of few words H let go with a litany of wonderful things (none of which I can remember, unfortunately) and asked me to marry him! We were both crying. I said yes!
Funny parts of the story:
1) Before our hike I had been trying to find a place to stash my phone or wallet and put them in the compartment where he'd hidden the ring box. It's weird that I didn't feel it.
2) On our ascent we saw a few instances of very fresh bear scat. On our descent we HEARD the bear, who was just across a little valley from us and well within scent range (they can smell up to a mile away). It kept grunting over and over again. We descended pretty quickly!!!
My proposal story is kind of sad in comparison! Both of your stories are so so sweet @zuuls_mom@mamaber2204.
We decided we wanted to get married, his mom gave him his grandma's ring to give me, we took it to get cleaned, and that was it. There was no proposal or big story. Honestly, that is how I would prefer it. I wouldn't have liked a big surprise. It was a mutual decision and we just went through all the steps together.
All your stories are so sweet! I love that you got YH's grandma's ring @kgg2241. I'm always so jealous of vintage rings with a meaningful back story.
Pretty early on in our relationship, like maybe 4 months in,
we went ring shopping. It was all just for fun. We both knew it was way too
early to be getting married or even thinking about getting married. We were
just out shopping and thought it would be fun to see what each other liked (we
had both been engaged before). We picked out a ring together and I remember
making the comment that I like the center diamond kite set. I didn’t think he
had gotten the information on the ring from the clerk but…
A year and a half later we were on our way camping for the 4th
of July. It was a couple hours drive from our place so DH suggests we stop
halfway and go for a hike at a state park. We hike to this beautiful river
bluff. MH is doing the cutesy hugging-you-from-behind thing as we both look
over the edge. Then he lets go and I turn around and find him on one knee. He
said a bunch of cute stuff about loving me forever and supporting me through
school (I had just decided to go back). He even had written and memorized a
poem lol. He had the same ring we had picked out together. The whole thing was
perfect.

@mamaber2204 DH and I were together for 9 years before we got married too! I could have written so much of what you wrote, especially the drunken crying episodes when I thought he wouldn't marry me because he didn't love me. (I was also (in)famous for asking him if there was some test I hadn't passed yet ) The way your H proposed was sweet and I'm really glad you guys didn't get eaten by a bear!! @zuuls_mom LOL at your sweating. I love that you remember that part so vividly!
We were on vacation in Punta Cana and on the last night there, he proposed while we were walking on the beach. Like @mamaber2204 we'd been together for so long that I was past the point of hoping/expecting anything, so I was totally shocked. But we're not particularly cute or romantic people, so from what I remember it was pretty quick and dirty, lol. I don't think he even got down on one knee!
Sounds like a lot of us had been dating our now husbands for a long time! I feel like so many people in my life lately have gotten engaged after only dating for a year or so. Nothing wrong with that - just feels so quick compared to my own experience.
We met in class the first day of sophomore year (for both of us) in college. Hit it off right away and been together ever since.
Fast forward about 7 years (renting an apartment, buying a house, a major job career change, etc.). I had gotten him into watching the show Southern Charm with me, so he decided we should plan a trip to Charleston. The day we arrived we took a walk down to the water where they have the big pineapple fountain. He said we should throw pennies in and make a wish, then when I turned around he was on one knee and said he wished that I would marry him.
You think I would've seen it coming after all that time, but in that particular moment it was such a surprise. I remember I kept saying to him, "Who gets engaged at 2 o'clock on a Tuesday?". I love that it was a completely random day - not graduation, my birthday, or a holiday.
Well, I guess I’ll be the odd one out since we got engaged after dating for about 7 months! We started ring shopping after about 4/5 months. When you know, you know!! 🥰
I knew it was coming, but didn’t know how he was going to ask. We talked a boatload about our future and getting married soon and I knew he had bought the ring (since I was there with him, lol). He told me to get out early from work some random Friday so I did and came home to a lovely card taped on our bedroom door. But no DH in sight. I waited for him for hours (!!) because he was helping his parent set up their internet and I guess it was talking longer than he thought. He came home, told me to get dressed and we went to a concert! He kept playing with my ring finger all night, freakin teasing me so I was a bit disappointed when he hadn’t asked me the question during the concert. The concert ended, we drove home and I was just about to change into my PJs when he asked me to come outside. We went outside, he got on one knee and said a whole bunch of lovely things. We both cried and that was that!!
Mine isn't a proposal story, we just mutually agreed it would be a good time to get married - we'd been together 5 years and had discussed getting married someday a few times before. We didn't do an engagement ring, but DH made our wedding rings - they're super simple but I really love them.
My husband definilty surprised me. He took me on a hike to a waterfall in the mountains. We went off the path, and he kept trying to propose but I kept moving and telling him to come over with me! He said he got the ring out and shoved it back in his pocket a few times! I turned around to find him on one knee and he had found a spot between the trees where the sun was shining so that he ring would sparkle in the sunshine. For some reason, it didn’t hit me and I didn’t think it was really happening. My response was, “are you serious!?” to which my husband asked, “is that a yes!?” Haha, I happily said yes!
I later found out that a week earlier, he had made a day trip to Chicago to have lunch with my dad and ask him to marry me, and for advice on the ring. I couldn’t believe he went all of the way to Chicago without missing breakfast or dinner with me that day! Gotta hand it to him, pretty danged smooth!
A week before our wedding, we escaped back to that waterfall and we said our vows with just the 2 of us. It was so good to forget about the stress of the wedding and remember what it was all about.
@zuuls_mom “even when you’re in a poopy mood” hahaha so cute & totally something my H would say too! @blitzybee that is crazy how he went to ask your dad w/o you knowing, very sweet.
My H & I played on a church music team & became good friends in our teens. We began writing more endearing letters to each other when I went away to Australia for 6 months when I was 20. We started dating Mar 2010 after pretty much being besties & in love for a while. We ended up ring shopping at Jared’s Feb 2011 & he bought my diamond & band that evening (he was only 20!). I knew he had the ring but didn’t know how long he’d wait to ask my dad & to propose. On a random Monday in April, after I got out of Uni, he invited me to his place, made me dinner, & said he wanted to go to the church and play music...kind of uncommon but not too weird bc we both loved doing that together. While there, he seemed pretty chill & we played & sang, when he finally said he had one more song. It was a song he had written me a couple months prior for Valentine’s Day & I hadn’t heard him play it since then. When he got to the end of the song he changed the lyrics a bit for the last words that he sung to be “will you be my wife?” And then he swung his guitar around and got on one knee with the ring in hand. I said yes & he turned on some music & we danced on the stage of the empty church. 🥰 Music is still a big part of our lives & I love that he thought about bringing it into his proposal.
My H and I dated for 2 years before we started looking at rings and I had picked out one I liked which he ordered that day. So I knew it was going to happen at some point. But he told me he was going to make it special because i knew about the ring. I was in school one day and he messages me and told me we were going out for supper that night and I should dress up. So all night at supper I was waiting for it and it never happened. There were a few other times that he did random things that made me think it was going to happen.
But one night we went to do laundry at my moms ( she was in NY at the time) because we lived in an apt with no washer and dryer. He said he left something in the car and came back in the house with a scrapbook with pictures of us and a story about how a prince found his princess. When I got to the end of the scrapbook and looked up he was on one knee. I still have no idea what he said as I was crying. But I know I said yes!!
My story is lame, but it’s also very us. We had been dating 2.5 years and had just moved in together 2 months beforehand. We were laying in bed together, it was pretty late. I remember it was October 1, 2008. We were just talking around something random when suddenly he asked “hey, do you want to get married?” I told him of course! But I didn’t really believe he was serious so I told him that if he was serious he’d change our relationship status on Facebook. Lol, to be dumb and 21 again. He changed it and we were official. Luckily this was before parents were on Facebook because I think they would have been pissed to find out that way, haha. We went to pick out the ring together, I think maybe he knew I was picky and I would to give input . We were 21 and broke, so it’s nothing amazing, but I still love it and that we picked it our together.
Loving reading all of these stories, they are all unique!
We we had been dating for about 4 years, 2 years in high school and 2 while I was in university an hour away. One October weekend I came home and he planned a trail ride at a local camp. I didn’t think anything of it as I’d been bugging him to go for a ride for a while. Plus he had said the week before to not expect anything. His brother and sister came too as they wanted to get some ‘family pictures’. We got to a spot to do the pictures and he got down on one knee and said some things I don’t remember and I whispered a yes! Meanwhile his sister filmed the whole thing! (I should look for that video) I cry at practically everything but didn’t cry that day and he still bugs me about it every so often. Our wedding was in 2010, exactly 5 years after our first date!
It was definitely not a surprise since my husband cannot keep a secret. We have known each other since we were 6 years old but didn't become really great friends until after college. We had been together about 9 months when he popped the question. About 3 months into dating he said he was going to marry me and I'm like okay whatever lol we were long distance our first 9 months since I was finishing up grad school and the day I moved up to be with him he popped the question. We used to FaceTime every night, and one day he was asking me about rings and I told him everything not really thinking about it that he literally went to the jeweler and told the guy he wanted the ring that was on the second page top left corner haha it's the one I showed him lol
FF to when I moved back to VA (where we grew up, both went to college in FL) and we went to our favorite spot for football and later that night we were just watching a movie like usual then we had sex haha and then afterwards he was like I can't wait any longer and proposed in his bedroom lol so not romantic which I don't need it to be. I definitely leave out the part about having sex when people used to ask haha
We had been together for 2 years, living together for one. Before I met my DH he used to record himself playing guitar and singing covers. He had been bugging me for awhile that he wanted me to record him playing again. I am always super busy so I kept pushing him off. Finally one day he seemed much more anxious to get it done. I was out at a tradeshow and when I came home he had everything ready to go. I tidied up a bit because I figured he'd want to post the video online and I didn't want our place to be a mess! Turns out I had freaked him out because I was arranging the pillows that he had the ring hidden behind!
He had written me a song aptly titled Will You Marry Me? It sure didn't take long to realize this wasn't a cover and it wasn't just a song he wanted to record for FB. I held it together for most of the song. And at the end he pulled out the ring and got down on one knee. That's where I started bawling like a baby. It was a great day! And here we are two years later starting our family!

When I got to the end of the scrapbook and looked up he was on one knee. I still have no idea what he said as I was crying. But I know I said yes!!
