I don't think DD gets enough protein

I was just reading the daily recommended servings on babycenter ... she's supposed to get 2 servings/day, and I think she barely gets 1 - she won't eat meat and beans give her *bad* gas.  Everytime I try to eat beans, she gets horrible gas and I once decided a few months ago that I'd try giving her 1 bean, 2 beans, 3 beans every day to see if I could get her body used to it ... it didn't work. 

Any ideas of protein rich foods I can give her (or ideas to help her get over the whole gassy bean deal, lol!)

  • Can she eat eggs yet? DS loves eating a scrambled egg, and that's good finger food.

    ?Also homemade rice cakes - I take leftover rice, add an egg and sometimes some breadcrumbs, sometimes some cheese, and quickly panfry until the egg sets.


    Cheese, yogurt, Morningstar products all are great, too. ??

  • i give ds small amounts of tofu and cottage cheese.  yesterday someone said tofu's bad so i plan to ask pedi at our 9 mo appt on monday.
  • also boiled egg yolks - scrambling is a good idea too!
  • The rice cakes are a great idea.... she won't really eat eggs on their own.  I don't know if its the consistency or what but even if I add cheese she spits it out!

    Why no tofu?  I noticed that recommended on babycenter as a protein rich food and I thought I could give her some (it says 1/4 c tofu is one protein serving).  Hmmm....

  • Soy is high in protein and so are eggs. That's how ds gets a chunk of his protein since he looooves eggs. We have them at least every other day. Dairy is a good source of protein so things like milk, cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt will all pack a protein punch. And even oatmeal has a decent amount of protein so try to feed her more oatmeal as a grain first. I believe steelcut oatmeal is the highest in protein and soooooo yummy. I have a great baked oatmeal recipe that can be cut into squares and frozen then you can defrost the night before and warm it up, splash on some milk and you've got a super yummy breakfast that's really good for you. Let me know if you'd like it.

    Also nuts are a good source of protein but since your dd can't have that yet you could try sunbutter. Nut free but still full of healthy fats and proteins just like nut butters.

  • She does eat yogurt and cheese and cottage cheese regularly, I wasn't thinking of those having protein! Confused
  • I'd LOVE the baked oatmeal recipe!!  :o)  Sounds delic! 
  • This only works with steelcut oats, I tried making it with rolled oats once and it came out all flacid and rubbery. Blech. You should be able to find them anywhere you can get bulk food and I've seen it prepackaged in natural sections too - maybe by Bobs Red Mill?  I used to make mine with almonds but now that I let ds eat it too I just omit the almonds for now. 

    Baked Oatmeal

    2.5 C Steel Cut Oats
    3.25 C Milk
    2 Eggs
    1 T Vanilla
    1/2 Brown Sugar
    1 tsp cinnamon
    .75 C Dates, raisons, chopped fruit or craisons (I love diced up pear in ours)
    .5 C chopped or sliced nuts (Optional)

    combine ingredients and let sit for 15 min. Preheat oven to 350. Pour mixture into an 8" greased round cake pan or large rectangular baking/ pyrex pan. Bake for 45 min. Cut into wedges and serve warm with milk. Individual servings can be frozen and reheated later - they always defrost overnight in my fridge so if I want it in the morning I just pull it out the night before. Sometimes I add a bit more brown sugar when I heat it up but I like my oatmeal sweet Embarrassed

    And yeah, duh I forgot tofu. ?DS doesn't particularly care for it, but he will sometimes eat it if I use Dobie's apple cider vinegar marinade for it. ?He eats only things he can pick up these days, hence the rice cakes...?

  • I think that the tofu thing has to do with the estrogenic effects of soy. There are compounds in soy that mimc estrogen in the body so some folks believe that it should be avoided for boys and maybe even limited for girls. Even in countries where tofu consumption is wide-spread, the tofu would be used as an ingredient, rather than the main course, does that make sense?

    Personally, I think that a little is OK. You just have to be careful, because we put soy into absolutely EVERYTHING. If you start to read labels, you'll see that soy is in SO many processed and packaged foods.

    I have given Ethan small amounts of tofu. I think that a little here and there isn't going to hurt him.

    Will she eat fish? Ethan ate some salmon noodle cassarole last weekend and LOVED it! I'm not worried about his protein intake becaues he is still almost 100% breast fed, but it was good to know that he'll eat the salmon. It was the canned stuff. I mixed it in with macaroni and some asparagus and some other stuff and baked it. Kind of like tuna noodle casserole but with salmon and asparagus.

    Also, I think quinoa has a lot of protein in it, and Ethan loves that! I think that I heard that the white part of the egg is the most allergenic, so if you're concerned about egg allergies, only go with the yolk. Ethan loves egg yolk, too!

  • I was going to say Quinoa too!  I don't have children so I don't know the "rules" but I eat it a lot to up my own protein intake at the suggestion of my naturopath.  She gave me a whole list of alternate protein sources and outside the bean family I think Quinoa is a great bet.  I like it with honey or apple butter and yogurt or ricemilk (kind of as an oatmeal substitute) for breakfast and I add it to a lot of my dinners as a side dish or even in a main depending on what I'm having.  It's pretty quick/easy to cook compared to other grains.

  • Thanks girls!  :)  I really appreciate all the ideas.  I've got to find some steel cut oatmeal, YUM! 

    As far as tofu is concerned, my mom blames part of her thyroid problems on too much soy so we avoid is as much as possible.   I think the key is moderation, though.
