Nails and fails from this week:
Nails: had the Jewish holiday Purim, got a lot of compliments on our themed costumes, and gift baskets.
Fails: Friday we were all exhausted and recovering from the holiday, and I yelled at the boys a lot more than I would have liked. Also used DS#2's full name for the first time. (The full name usually only comes out when I'm really upset, I hope to pull it when I'm really proud too, but that has yet to happen 🤷‍♀️)

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read?
I love to read anything by Sandra Boynton. I hate reading anything for the 5th time in a row. I also get annoyed by the books without a story, like baby's first words, with just pictures and words.

Nails and fails from this week: Not much going on.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: So our basement is a disaster, its mostly unfinished and its half storage half stuff left by the old owner (random wood, nails, shelving etc. We also have a few old couches down there. Its an unorganized mess. So we have to clean out the spare bedroom to turn it into a nursery. We had recently set it up and a craft room and some storage. So now we have to organize the basement to move all the stuff from the nursery down to the basement, including a table. Yesterday we worked for 4 hours while my daughter was at grandmas and we barely made a dent. But once I saw all the stuff we took to goodwill it felt so good to get rid of a bunch of stuff.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read? I love reading Hand Hand Fingers Thumb.. and dread reading Cat in the Hat.

Nails and fails from this week: Found out we are team blue at the AS last week. Picked a name! Now, I need to stock up on boy clothes since I have two DDs.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: Surpringly, I had some gender disappointment for about 24 hours. I don't think I was sad about having a boy, but more the loss of not having another girl... because I really enjoy my girls. And I am getting rid of all the girl clothes since this will be my last. Anybody else feel that way?

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read? I love it when my DD reads to me now! I dread any book with flaps.

Nails and fails from this week: nail-made it to 9 am church service with both kids this morning while DH was working. Fail- I still feel like crap and my house is still a disaster. Also losing my crap too much.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: I am frustrated that this is another difficult pregnancy. I am unbelievably thankful baby and I are healthy but I want to go back to feeling okay again.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read? I love the pout pout fish, tons of others as well but that comes to mind first. I can not stand Dr. Seuss books...that is probably an UO.

@elizabeth_1985 I'm having a boy after 2 girls. I'm stoked that I'm having a boy, but cried so hard going through the clothes to pull out nlthe neutral ones because I realized I'd never see all the girl clothes on another one of my kids again. So not really gender dissappointment in having a boy, but definitely sad that it means I won't have another girl. If that makes sense...

Nails and fails from this week: DD1 had a great birthday and birthday party, we did a lot of activities this week as a family, so those are all wins.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: This is pretty much every mom's rant, but my goodness do kids outgrow clothes SO FAST. I feel like I just did a big shopping push for DD1 not that long ago and she suddenly seems to have no clothes that fit anymore.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read?: Love reading Llama Llama (although I can't rap it the way Luda can!!), my oldest LOVES Suess books (but dang they are long). For the little one, we get a lot of reaction when reading the Duck and Goose books and her current favorite is "There's a Bear in my Chair."

Nails and fails from this week: DD1 made it through a "shopping" trip to CVS with ALL the holiday candies and Easter swag out - without a meltdown. Even got a compliment from a fellow line-stander about how well she was doing, noting her 3.5 y.o. would have completed melted by now. I smiled and said "you know it's day-by-day and we just happen to get a good one" ... but I'm totally taking it as a parenting NAIL!

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: I've been really hesitant to buy anything for DD2, given what we already have PLUS just nervous in general about her arrival ... but I did buy her a cute romper set from Carter's last week (with another load of clothes for DD1) and it kinda matches a set that her big sister will have. All the uterus tingles!

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read?: Our favorite right now is Monster and Son by David LaRochelle. We didn't really tell a lot of people what DD1 was, so a friend gifted it to us and I just absolutely love it. It offers a lot of things for DD1 to talk about in the pictures and it's easy to switch "son" or "boy" out for "girl" or "child." Another favorite is "Daddy said a word I never heard" by Scott Cohn, though, TBH, it's this mommy that swears a lot. But it's really fun to make up funny exclamations with DD1. Her forever favorite, though, is Feminist Baby by Loryn Brantz. The pictures are very bright and silly, and she's loved it since I started reading it to her very early. She's practically got it memorized. On the other hand, I haaaaaaaaaaate nearly every Dr. Suess book - unless it's at non-bedtime time. Now I know why my parents would just give me 15-20 min to myself to peruse through them, they're like a damn Dostoevsky novel. However, I still love There's a Wocket in my Pocket (and have it memorized) and love to put it to a rap like the OG I pretend to be

Nails and fails from this week: Nail and Fail: woke up yesterday and decided to clean out the garage. Nail because 75% of the garage is much cleaner. Sold a few items that would have gone in the trash (spare wood from a few projects and a cabinet we switched out). Fail because I way overdid it and was having Braxton Hicks contractions the rest of the day and still happening today. Also, I still am pretty sick with the flu so probably not the best idea. Also a fail because both kids were outside for a few hours (yay!) but I forgot to subscreen their faces and they both burned a bit (fail). I'm usually really careful with that but didnt even think of it. Also fail: DH broke his finger so Ill probably never hear the end of it.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: Half way through pregnancy is NOT the time to clean out the garage! Just in case anyone else had that stupid idea. Just say no.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read? So DH is the real book reader to the kids. He is so patient with them and will read anywhere from 2-5 books per night. When he is out of town, I have to take over. The poor kids get the shortest book possible or if they choose a long one, Ill skip pages without them noticing. I'm a horrible mom! I just want them to go to sleep so I can get in bed!
As little babies, both liked the Sandra Boynton books - especially Dinosaur Dance. I still have it memorized and i havent read it in almost 2 years. Some of the kids favorites over the years have been "Found", "Thank you Octopus", "Creepy Pair of Underwear", the little blue trucks ones, "Where do Airplaines Sleep At Night", the Goodnight Goodnight series. Lots of variety. Duck and Goose are good short ones. Dr. Suess ones (after board books) are SOOOOOO LONG. The Baby University ones are good too, and "Calculus for Infants"...but we are both nerds.

Also, we have about a million books. My mom saved all the books from me and my brother's little kid years and I'm the only kid with kids, so I have all of those. Plus, we've bought far too many books! Books seem to accumulate.

@sourlemon - You're absolutely right on the halfway-through-is-no-time-for-serious-projects! I need to get my butt in gear and get the nursery mostly put-together and the spare bedroom stuff up before this one arrives

Also, I have the Quantum Physics for Babies, ABCs of Science, and HTML for Babies. I'm looking into getting a few more coding books and games to get her interested, she's definitely a curious kid and loves puzzles/games as much as I do/did.

@peachy0709 - I think we all wish we could rap as smoothly as Luda to Llama, Llama. DD1 loves it when I put it on for her.

@sourlemon and @elizabeth_1985 - I totally understand with the clothes. I was slightly disappointed when I found out #2 was a girl because I knew this would be our last and I was dreaming of seersucker suits and bow ties ... but then I remembered (as I was skimming Carter's, etc) all about bubble shorts and ruffle butts. I'm not a girly person or dresser by any means, but - damn - I love a cute baby outfit. Once they're mobile, it's more about function than form, anyway.

@elizabeth_1985 I think that is totally normal. I would have been temporarily bummed had we been told we were having a boy, just because I always wanted a sister for my daughter.

Nails and fails from this week: Nail: We are working on a few home improvements and I have things booked for April. Fail: I have not done one thing to get the nursery ready, and I really need to get on that. We also got take out way too much last week and I'm hoping to do a little better this week.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: My daughter has always very strongly preferred me over my husband, and she is finally getting to an age where she's having more fun with Dad. It makes me so happy, and also relieved to know that it should hopefully make the transition easier for her when baby comes.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? What book do you dread them asking you to read? I love reading Goodnight Moon. We started reading it as the last book of the night when we established her bedtime routine at 6 or so months old, so it just makes me happy. I also love reading Dragons Love Tacos because it's so random and silly. Books I dislike: Dr. Seuss. I feel like I'm stumbling over my words with all of the rhymes and they are so long.

@MamaK225 sadly we have an ever bigger project we need to complete before May. 3 years ago we put in irrigation, 15 rose bushes, and a tree into the dog pen area of the yard. Put rock over it all and it was good...until we got a puppy last spring. He has basically torn out ALL the irrigation and we need to get it fixed before it starts getting to 100 degrees everyday (so we basically have until mid-may to get it done). This will involve moving rock, pulling out the remnants of the old pipe, trenching, laying new pipe, spreading rock, and covering the new pipe with flagstone so the puppy cant tear it out again (he's still a digger/chewer). I have no idea how that is going to get done. To do it ourselves would be probably $500 for materials and a full weekend of hard work. To hire a company would be about $5k. I'm not sure I want to spend that much, or if its even worth it. But if we dont get it done before it gets hot, all the plants will die. So next year we'd have to do all that work PLUS dig out dead plants and put in new ones. Each rose bush is $20-25 so it would add quite a bit. UGH.

That is pretty daunting, @sourlemon, but definitely things to consider. The summer heat is nothing to mess with! I wonder if you could someone wiggle that one in as a "baby shower" kind of gift or a pre-baby "help" from some friends and family (I know some friends and family will bring you ready-to-bake dinners, come over to help with some minor repairs, etc. after baby is born) ... some of their hard work as a "gift." Worth a shot

I like reading most of DD's board books to her. I haven't found any that I dislike reading to her. It makes my teacher heart happy everytime she brings me a book to read to her.

Nails and fails from this week: Took DD to the beach this weekend. It was our first time in a VERY long time (which is a travesty because we live in Hawaii). She freaked out about the sand at first, but got used to it after a while.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary: My daycare person is having knee surgery so I have to find alternate care for two weeks. Of course, those two weeks are right before my mom is coming to visit. So basically I am paying for a whole month, but really using one week's worth of daycare. Ugh.

GTKY: What is your favorite book to read your kids? DD loves Goodnight Moon; Goodnight Lab; Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See, and Old McDonald Had a Farm.

What book do you dread them asking you to read? All of the above since she loves them so much, she wants me to read them to her 100 times in a row.

Nail - my in-laws visited last weekend and took home some of their stuff that was in the future nursery.
Fail - my in-laws didn’t take all their furniture that’s in the future nursery...and that’s the stuff I want out the most.

Rant/Rave/Dear Diary:
Nausea is back, which is annoying on its own, but it’s also mentally exhausting and makes me wonder if I’m ever going to feel ok during this pregnancy.

Right now DD loves “Don’t Push the Button!” BY Bill Cotter and I love reading it to her b/c she gets the giggles. We also love Sandra Boynton’s “The Going to Bed Book” and I get a kick out of Boynton’s “But Not the Hippopotamus.”

@Twinkiedoll what island are you on? I know it's cliche but Maui is my favorite place in the whole world. We go every time we have a kid turning 2 (right before so they travel free) and I'm already looking forward to this baby getting close to 2 haha. It's turned out to be about every 3 years since our honeymoon. We look at all the places we could travel but always choose Maui.

As much as I love it, I don't think I could live there! Just wish I could visit once a year!

DS#1 came and told me he needed to go on the potty twice this morning!! I'm trying not to get my hopes up, especially because his pull-up was wet both times (although the first was right when he woke up), but I'm hoping this means we're finally getting somewhere with potty training.

@mrosek91 congrats, I am so jealous! DS turns 3 in 2 weeks and has no interest whatsoever in potty training. I tried 2 months ago and it was a complete failure. The goal is to try again over spring break, if that fails I will try when school lets out for the summer.

@Allycat11 Thanks! He just turned 3 a week and a half ago, and we've been low-key trying since November, so this was very exciting. The most common advice I have gotten from everyone is you just have to be patient, it's not something you can force. Which I'm sure you remember from your DD.
It's just so hard... I really don't want 3 in diapers, but I keep telling myself that August is a long way off, and we have time...

@mrosek91 I completely agree that it is not something you can force. DD was 3.5 when she was finally ready. She fought potty training so badly. DS has not fought it but has never succesfully gone in the toilet and could not care less about being wet or dirty. So many of my friends have had success potty training right at 2 and I am so jealous. DS needs to figure it out by September or he can't keep going to school. He is in a 2 year old class now that allows diapers but for the 3 year old class he needs to be potty trained.

@Allycat11 - I'm in the same boat. We're not really stressing it, but definitely encouraging as much as it doesn't trigger her internal alarms. DD1 (she'll be 3 in July) *is* getting better at telling us she needs to pee or poop - but it's a 50/50 split of if she's already done it in her diaper or if she is truly going to go into the potty. I guess we'll have to really step it up soon, but she is one of those who won't do anything unless it's her choice/decision/idea. No amount of bribery, threats, rewards, or punishments will persuade her. Ugh.

@sourlemon We live on Oahu. I would go stir crazy living on any of the neighbor islands. Honolulu is already too small for me as it is. Kauai is probably my favorite of the islands for vacation, though Maui is a very close second.

@sourlemon I do have to say, the Disney Aulani resort on Oahu is amazing for kids. I didn't understand it until I had kids and was there with SIL's kids. They put a lot of thought into activities for a range of ages. There is also a kid drop off so the parents can have some alone time too.
