Ultrasound Specialist

So my whole pregnancy experience has been not right.  First I found out waaaaay later than normal that I'm even pregnant. So I missed all the first trimester stuff.  (Not completely complaining about all of the missed parts of the first trimester).  So one week after finding out I'm pregnant I am having an ultrasound to determine how far along I am and I learn I'm having a boy....then I have the anatomy scan yesterday.  They are sending me to an ultrasound specialist because they didn't get all of the images of the heart that they needed.  Which has me very nervous.  I am very aware that I didn't take a single prenatal vitamin during the first trimester and that really bothers me.  I know that is very helpful in heart development.  I'm nervous that I have messed this pregnancy up by convincing myself I was incapable of carrying anymore children.  We tried for so long and I have been off birth control for years and now when I was so out of sync with my body I do get pregnant and I missed it.

Anyone else have to get specialist scans because they "weren't able to see everything"?  I'm looking for reassurance that everything could be just fine and that maybe it literally is what the doctor said that they just weren't able to get the shots they needed because of positioning etc.  I have experienced 2 early losses and have seen doctors very calmly know something is wrong but not show it until they have confirmation.  So I'm worried we are just waiting for confirmation that something is wrong.  I go on the 26th for the scan.

Re: Ultrasound Specialist

  • I know of lots of people who needed extra scans because they didn't get the pictures they needed the first time. I know it's hard not to worry though!

  • Maybe I'm extra nervous because they specifically referenced wanting to see more of the heart....
  • They couldn't see everything with the heart for DD and didn't send me for a cardiology ultrasound.  She was born with 4 VSDs.  However, 3 spontaneously closed by 18 months and we are hopeful the fourth closes by 3.5 years.
I went for a cardiology ultrasound for this pregnancy even though they found nothing wrong with the heart on the 20 week.  They ordered it because of my first.  They found one VSD.

I took all of the vitamins for both pregnancy.  Heart issues happen.

Most heart issues either resolve on their own or are easily treated.

Chances are everything is fine.  If there is a problem, it will most likely be very small.
  • @JLHeisler I am sorry you are feeling so nervous and stressed <3 It's very very common that you need to have a second scan to capture the heart chambers. Usually it's just because the baby is in a weird position, sometimes it's because the first scan was done too early to capture a great picture. I had a second scan with DS and nearly had another one this time because LO was in a weird position. And if it's helpful, all of my scans are with an ultrasound technician at a major hospital for no other reason than they have better equipment and better trained professionals. Also, you can still have a very normal and healthy pregnancy without prenatals. Your body stores a wealth of nutrients for your LO and you will get a lot of what you need just from regular nutrition. I hope everything turns out great for you and the baby when you have your scan next week.
  • I have to go back in for a second anatomy scan, they didn't get good images of her heart and one of her arms. I of course freaked out when I first found out, but my doctor told me it is normal to have to go back in to get better images. Try not to worry!!

This. We can store months worth of some vitamins. Also, baby gets first dibs on any available vitamins or minerals - my OBGYN has told me that several times. So you yourself might become deficient, but baby will get theirs.

We had to go see a fetal cardiologist and have a special ultrasound to get better views (and everything was fine!). They are just super careful these days and so many heart issues can be remedied if they have notice. I would trust what your doc says and not worry!

  • Yes! I had to go back for an echocardiogram because baby wasn't in a good position during the AS and I have a single umbilical artery which can be tied to heart defects. I was freaking out but everything is fine, although baby was still not super cooperative so there are a couple more images they need for my next US. I know it's hard but try not to worry!
  • With DS, his arm was over his chest for the ultrasound. We had to get an echocardiogram at a specialist's office and I was super freaked out and upset. My OB didn't even really tell me, I thought the follow up would be in their office with their techs. Everything was fine though, they were able to get the images they needed!
  • I had to go for a repeat ultrasound on mine. There were a few images that looked like there could be abdominal edema, I had to go to MFM for a second opinion. Went in and everything was just fine. I came to find out the lady doing my first ultrasound has a history of messing up this set of images. It was a scary few days while I worried about it. But in the end, everything was A-OK!
  • Yep! Completely normal to have to go back in. Baby could have moved or was in a bad position, tech could have accidentally saved the wrong shot, or the Dr could have just wanted a clearer pic.

  • Thank you all.  I have found some calm about it all.  There's nothing I can do but wait to see what happens.  No sense in getting myself stressed out and ultimately stressing baby out as well.

It's hard, but I'm spending my energies focusing on the nursery and preparing for his arrival instead. ;)
  • With my first we had to have 2 extra ultrasounds because they were having a hard time getting all 4 chambers of the heart. (That’s all they paid attention to on the extra ultrasounds)

i also didn’t take a single vitamin or seek prenatal care  in the first trimester because I didn’t know I was pregnant this time (3rd pregnancy) so I feel the guilt too
  • I know this isn't quite the same thing, but I needed a repeat u/s because they couldn't see his spine. My sister had a repeat also because her baby was super active and they couldn't see everything the first time. I think it's pretty common! I'm sorry you're stressed😔 I'm sure finding out later than most adds to your swirling emotions!
  • I had my anatomy scan and the technician wasn’t able to get all the images. My dr said this is quite common. Hang in there! You’re doing great!
  • I have to go for another anatomy scan because they couldn't get all heart images (baby was uncooperative). I have very good insurance and I think they see me as a walking piggy bank (I've already had 10 ultrasounds at 22 weeks and not a thing has been abnormal with this baby). I would try not to worry, they are just being thorough.
  • So I had the ultrasound yesterday and still they didn't get all the pics.  I was told I was probably going to be sent to get a heart echo?  I'm just waiting for my OB to call me and tell me the good news that they didn't get the pics they wanted to get and really see what is next for me and little one.  I have a lot of questions if they send me for a heart echo.  I'm probably going to start questioning the necessity to do it and why I can't just wait and do a growth ultrasound in four weeks or something?  I do need them to clarify how not concerned I need to be with this...with losses I hope they understand my need for more information than just we need more pics.
  • I had to see a heart specialist when I was pregnant with my twins. The tech had a hard time getting all the images of their hearts. It made feel at ease when we were done and everything came back normal. I had to do a similar thing with this pregnancy except the tech was able to get all the images she needed on the second try. Had she not I would’ve been referred to a specialist. I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to worry. Sometimes it’s just hard to capture all the images they need.
  • My cousin found out she was pregnant at around 20+ weeks that she was pregnant and due in May and she drank and definitely wasn't on multivitamins. She had several ultrasounds done and extra tests because she didn't know as well. I also had a friend who didn't realize it until she started having Braxton Hicks contractions around 36 weeks and her daughter was born small but no major complications. So your definitely not alone and I'm sure this has been a crazy experience for you. With my first I had to have an extra anatomy scan because my son didn't cooperate for pictures and it all turned out fine. They usually tell you if they are comcerconfor any reason.
