real or adjusted for sleep training?

Everything I've read says that 4 months is a real sleep turning point... naps become more regular, real sleep training including modified cio can begin etc.  I am DYING to start some nap training with my babies... I feel that they are very overtired and putting them down when they're sleepy works sometimes but they wake up a lot and since they're still young I go in and try to soothe them back to sleep but I feel like a lot of the time what I do just wakes them back up.  I know that in a lot of the nap training stuff you just don't go help when they wake up and let them go back to sleep... but that all starts at 4 months.

I'm fine with waiting 2 more weeks (they'll be 4 months very soon) but I don't know if I can stand to wait the whole 8 weeks til they are 4 months adjusted... it seems like FOREVER!

did you do nap training?  Do you think it needs to be at their real or adjusted age?

Re: real or adjusted for sleep training?

  • It has to be adjusted age.  Since adjusted age they are only 2 months, a typical 2 month old doesn't have the ability to understand and self soothe.  Sorry!

  • I am in the exact same boat as you but our Pedi says it's their adjusted age for sleep training :(  I shouldn't complain b/c my guys are going 8 hours straight on their own.

That's what I was worried about ... but what do I do about the fact that when I go in to calm them during a nap it just wakes them up?  Like I go in and they're fussing but when they see me they give a big grin (and a yawn so I know they're still sleepy) and won't go back to sleep?  I feel like by attempting to soothe I'm preventing sleep... I'm so confused!

  • Maybe one thing you could try is try to keep them up more during other times? Like say you want them to nap 12-2, so make sure you keep them up 10-12. Also swaddle and give a pacifier. Also what I do (mine have the same problem, they sometimes fuss a bit when they are still tired) is if they are just fussing I don't go in, I only go in if they are crying for at least 20 seconds. Usually they stop before I get a chance to count to 5! And when I do go to soothe I never pick them up and never talk to them, because that stimulates them, I just give a pacifier and re-swaddle if necessary and pat their tummys.

  • Talk to your pediatrician.  I was kind of surprised when they said let them self soothe although I admit I cannot remember when that was.  Good luck!
