WTF Wednesday 3/6/19

Re: WTF Wednesday 3/6/19

  • I was working on cleaning up an excel spreadsheet with 10 tabs, every tab having 100-10,000 rows. I was almost done, and then the last command I gave it caused my excel to crash. Like an idiot, I forgot the frequent save!! Luckily the auto save got everything but the last 2 tabs, and those are some of the smaller ones, but my boss needed this an hour ago...
  • Loading the player...
  • @mrosek91, I hate when that happens. I always forget to frequently save and have lost 10+ page documents because of it.

    *Live, Love, Laugh, Learn*

  • @mrosek91 that is the WORST. Thank goodness auto-save got most of it for you.
@AKuzReve wow that is presumptuous of her...most people don't share the shit they went through with everyone and your brother. 1) its not their business and 2) you don't want to dredge it up all the time. I'm annoyed for you.

mine is totally a FWP. I sent DH to the store to get lemon lara bars yesterday (this kid LOVES lemon) there are only 6 in a box (which if I don't control myself only lasts 2 days) I was hoping he would come home with 2 boxes... well he came home with 4 boxes... except only one was lemon and all the other flavors make me want to vomit thinking about them.... Sigh

  • My step dad had a heart attack yesterday. Fortunately he is doing well after surgery but jesusssss criminy yesterday was rough. We live pretty rural and our local hospital is limited. Couldn't fly him out due to the weather so he had to go 100 miles in an ambulance to a larger facility.  During that drive, we had no idea what was going on.  A tense few hours to say the least.
  • @agpandme I'm so sorry about your step dad! I'm glad the surgery went well and that he's doing ok! Did he get a stent? I hope the MI was caught quickly and that he has a great recovery!

@agpandme - I'm so sorry to hear, thankfully he was able to get there in time.
@velvetskyy - Non-symptomatic "sick" kids are the worst. Bleh.

I had to step up and message a person at daycare about setting up a meeting to discuss DD2's place on the wait list where DD1 goes. I first reached out to them 3 weeks ago - the day I moved into the 2nd trimester - and found out there are 4 or 5 people "in front" of me which is complete bullshit and I had a meltdown. Told DH he needed to circle back for me because I'm not in a good frame of mind to deal with that. Three weeks, nothing. So I reached out today and we're going to set up something for next week to discuss. I'm going to hit DH with so much seething passive-aggressive vitrol when we get home, he will probably never recover. WHY MUST I DO EVERY MOTHERFLIPPIN' THING!? WHY EVEN ASK!? *breathing into a bag, reaching for a cookie*

ETA: The 'bullshit'ness comes from the fact that zero of the mothers of current enrolled children are currently pregnant (unless they are 2-3 months behind me, AKA just found out - which again, wouldn't put them in front of me). It's a small operation so I know ALL the moms of children 3 and under ... and their procreational status. It could be one of the "older" kids moms (who don't currently have a child under 4), but I would be SHOCKED if there are "4 or 5" from that group all knocked up at once.

  • I am sort of having a WTF moment at myself, for irrationally second guessing the concept of my husband being a stay at home dad. I'll get 4 months maternity leave and then the idea is that he'll stay home with the baby for the remainder of its first year. Financially it's the most sensible option for us -- we absolutely depend on my salary, but not his -- and if the roles were reversed, I'd never give it a second thought. But for some reason the idea of HIM staying home, while it makes all the sense, is harder to settle in my brain. No idea why. I thought I was more progressive and liberated than this, lol.

    Eta because tmi
  • I came to say exactly what @thirdtimesacharm2019 said! @law_and_little1, my husband is in the same industry as you so he is still the breadwinner (by far), but also because he's in the same industry as you, he has had some generous paternity leaves so he has a snapshot of what staying at home looks like.  We have ultimately decided it's not right for us RIGHT NOW, but if roles were reversed and I was the breadwinner, he would absolutely stay home.  I would like to eventually, but we also have chosen to have three kids, pay off his student loans extremely fast, and his work has work sponsored daycare.  So what I'm saying in an overly personal way is it's all fluid and everyone's circumstances are wildly different and you have to do what makes YOUR FAMILY function.

  • The SAH parent decision is very personal to each family. I was the primary breadwinner but really wanted to be the SAH parent. So that's what we did. DH is much happier in the role of provider than caregiver, but if for some reason he was unable to work I could find something in my field & he could stay home temporarily. That just wouldn't be ideal for either of us. You can always try an arrangement out and adjust later if it doesn't work for one or both of you, @law_and_little1!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • @WinchesterGirl @peachy0709 @thirdtimesacharm2019 -- thank you all! You are right, we can always re assess the decision at any point. No need to figure everything out immediately! :)

@law_and_little1 another thing to add to the sahd discussion.  My FIL was a stay at home dad most of my husband's childhood. FIL and MIL have a great work balance at home and I've never had the issues with DH not pulling his weight or taking initiative with household things that it seems is SO common with other men,  especially after kids are born.  Idk if it would have been that way anyways,  but I think having a sahd was a great thing for dh and our family is reaping the benefits now in the next generation.

We have very flexible and generous parent leave where we live so I took the first 16 months off with ds and then when I went back to work,  dh took off work January-summer, so he's currently sahd. It's not a long term thing for us at this point,  but it's going so well for our son.

I understand your inner feelings,  and you have time to process through them.  I'm not trying to negate your feelings at all,  just share my experiences with sahds. :)

  • My dream situation would be to make enough money so DH could stay home. He has a main job but his passion is writing and does it during his free time. I would love if he could stay home to take care of DD and school things/clean the house and then concentrate on writing. I'm going to law school in 2020, but I'm also interested in public interest law, so I don't think my dream of making money is coming true any time soon. The boy just has to get published if he wants to live that dream.

  • @BigBadWolf12 Love it! Wow, how wonderful that you got 16 months off -- I had to do a double take and see if that really said months, not weeks! Thanks for understanding my feelings, I feel weird for having them but it is so nice to know that it's a decision many women have had success with.
  • @EmilyA724 - so sweet! I know it is definitely a huge privilege to even have the option in front of me, for him to stay home. I graduated Michigan Law in 2017 and would be more than happy to talk through it with you!! Anything from study strategies to job searches to student loans to bar exams.  It is an enormous endeavor, and I'm always happy to talk about it. Shoot me a message if you'd like. Good luck!
  • @law_and_little1 that's so sweet of you, thank you! I work for a public interest law firm now and am surrounded by lawyers, hahaha, but I'm sure I'll have tons of questions. Congrats on UofM! Got a definitive rejection from there  :D Thought I'd maybe get waitlisted. Planning to work full-time and go in the evening part-time so it'll be interesting, but I got a full-ride so I can potentially graduate debt free, which will be amazing considering what my salary will most likely be.
