Do you plan to airair tra with your baby? How soon have you or do you plan to do so? We would like to after our baby is born but we want to when it makes sense for the baby and how they can handle it.
We’ll most likely be flying when he’s 4 months old for my brothers wedding. It’ll be interesting as that will be DD’s first flight as well. I would check with your pediatrician to make sure it’s okay before you go.
@tova24 We've been wondering about this... Have you spoken to a pediatrician about vaccines prior to traveling with baby? (We're going to ask ours of course.) But I've been wondering if traveling overseas before they're all complete is acceptable or if we should wait until the full series is done.
Took my son to Europe when he was 8 weeks and then again at 12 weeks. It was super easy. They can put you in a seat towards the front of the plane with an attachable bassinet so baby can sleep. I had a baby carrier so getting through the airport was quick and easy without a stroller. Also, you can skip every line with a little baby in tow. Especially easy if you’re breastfeeding since you don’t need to worry about formula or baby food for the journey. We talked to our doctor first. I don’t think she gave him any shots before we went. It was easier than travelling with him now that he is bigger (almost 3). My mom took me on a 7 hour plane ride when I was 10 days old and it was fine. That was 30 years ago and she did not clear it with her doctor. Lol.
@acgx I asked my pediatrician the last pregnancy and he only recommend flying when baby was vaccinated. Bare minimum would be having the first round of vaccines.
we are definitely planning to be out of the country when LO is 5 months and 7 months. should be fine as it will have 2 rounds of vaccines prior to it's first trip.
We flew to Boston when DD was 3 months old. We waited for her first round of shots, but I was more concerned about getting over the hump of flu season - last season was brutal. After that, we flew with her all the time. She went to Mexico and NYC when she was 4 months old. She's 15 months and has been on 16 flights and I will back up whoever said it gets tougher as they get older! Flying was super easy up until about 12 months. Now she's pretty wiggly and it's harder to keep her entertained on the plane.
Also, no issues with her and flying, as far as handling it. I've been told by other moms that the ear-hurting aspect is overblown. I know she has never had a problem with it. Also, in my experience, people have been REALLY nice to me with baby in tow. Even TSA. I know we all hear the awful stories, but I've experienced the complete opposite and while I like to think I just give off the vibe that makes people want to be nice to me really, people are just nicer than we give them credit for and recognize that travelling with a baby is stressful.
I want to take my baby to Texas to meet my grandmother. She’s frail because of years of smoking and is now in a nursing home (we really did try to be the ones to take care of her but she was stubborn and my grandfather interfered so it was bad for her health). I don’t know how long she has but I’d really prefer to have the first round of shots and I’m afraid of the sensitivity of his little ears.
@leylea89 Check out "earplanes", they are air pressure equalizing earplugs. I have inner ear damage from a scuba incident, so I use them for myself and they really have made a difference. I already have the baby ones, hahaha. They say they are for "small ears". I also carry earplugs in my purse for loud events for myself and am planning to get those earmuffs for baby.
