@blitzybee, I was told you had to be at least 10 weeks to have the NIPT done. I'm going in for my first OB appointment at 10.5 weeks, and will have it done then.
@blitzybee I was also told they don't do it until after 10 weeks. I've been scheduled for it the same morning as my next OB appt, and I'll be one day shy of 13 weeks then - I know I could ask to get in sooner, but it's pretty convenient to do it then so I'm thinking I'll just stick with that.
@blitzybee ditto what jakay2004 said. NIPT was recommended between 10 and 13 weeks. I've read online that you can do it as early as 9 weeks but at 10 weeks it seems to be pretty accurate. After complaining about having to see the Genetic Counselor, I had such a nice visit. The lady i saw was wonderful and so reassuring. Now the week wait for results...
Did anyone have their Dr recommend going straight to an amino versus starting with a NIPT? I'm 38 and DH is 50 so were dealing with really old parts here and my Dr said that we would get the most definitive answers and more broadly covered results with an amino. I'm so torn though because it seems so invasive and potentially unnecessary.
@monkeysmom80 hmm, I wonder why? I was recommended NIPT and the ultrasound to look at the neck. You have every right to choose the path you want. I agreed to the non invasive tests because that’s what’s right for me. Do what you feel best about!
@monkeysmom80An amino has been offered to me, but I never felt like it was being recommended over the other tests. it was mentioned again when I got my (normal) NIPT results back. An amino is really the only diagnostic test that is going to give you nearly definite answers. I still think you can't go wrong with starting with noninvasive and working your way up the ladder.
@blitzybee The reasoning was that the nipt only look at 4 chromosomes and with ama and advanced paternal age, there is more risk with the other chromosomes too. @dahliasanddogs I think I am going to start with a nipt, the maternity23(?) one, if we even do any. We have previously said that the results would just inform us only so.
@monkeysmom80 If you're interested in the answer, even just for planning purposes, the NIPT is so easy to do. I also end up really appreciating my (forced) appointment with the Genetic Counselor super informative and reassuring. She gave me the numbers straight and presented them in a more personal way. I'm a nurse practitioner so I was cocky and thought I knew everything, but I learned a few things.
I am waiting on my nipt results now. I am 36, dh is 41. As pp mentioned, nipt could be a good place to start. I am also doing the NT at 12 weeks. And the AS at 20 weeks. Otherwise my dr hasn’t recomended anything different than my last pregnancies. My first pregnancy was at 32, second at 35.
On a a side note, not sure where to post this. I am VERY nervous waiting for nipt results this time around. Anyone else still waiting? I’d love to have someone to wait with.
ETA: looked at the thread and it looks like a few ladies are getting their results early next week! Good luck
