The Prenatal Testing thread!

As the first official prenatal appointments arrive, the option of prenatal testing also comes. Here’s a thread to ask questions about the different tests, discuss your thoughts if you’re undecided about doing it, and anything else related.

This will help keep all the stuff together instead of mixed up in the great question thread.

I just remember being overwhelmed by all the tests that are out there the first go around. I figure others will be (or already are) as well.

I was only offered one kind the first time, which made it easy, but the second time, I got offered three different ones 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • I don't know whether this would go better here, or in the question thread, but I'll start here I guess. I assume the answer is probably "it depends on a lot of things" but I'm going to ask anyway.

Assuming your doctor does not order/recommend a NIPT (I'm not AMA or high risk for anything), and thus insurance may not cover any of it, does anyone happen to know how much a NIPT would cost OOP?

Panorama cost me $200 OOP. Most run in the $200-300 range. They billed my insurance for $8k. It got denied thrice, then they billed me
for $450-500. I called them that night to set up a payment plan, and they said since I called within 30 days, CA wouldn’t allow them to bill the full amount, so they would do $200. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Even in the high risk category, my insurance refused to cover it because it’s “genetic testing.” (It’s a screen, not a deterministic test, but they don’t care).

  • 4 years ago, Panorama billed me for the full $8k 🤯 but I ended up paying $50 if I remember correctly. My midwife had a plan set up with them so that no one paid more than $250. I also had to pay almost $50 to the lab where they sent my bloodwork, so that was really annoying...
  • *Lurking* I was AMA with my last and did the Counsyl test.  After insurance I still owed about $600-$700.  I applied for financial assistance and based on our income (the ladies on my BMB made me aware that this was an option, I assumed it wouldn't be as we're pretty average middle class I'd say) Counsyl covered 100% of my balance.

😳😳 eek! I’m glad they covered it!

did you get hit with coinsurance on it? The girls I know who did that one and went self pay were in the $200-300 range

  • @cmbt2 I'm trying to remember.  I think that's what happened, it was the coinsurance or bc I hadn't yet reached my deductible yet so I chose self pay and that's when they covered it.  Their website was fantastic and spelled out all the payment options very clearly.

Oof! It makes a crappy kind of sense that it was so outrageously high at first. That happened to me when I had the quad screen with my first. Was NOT expecting to get hit with a $1k bill😳😳
