Re: February STM & STM+ Check-In

  • @junebabyh not going to lie, I can do without the attitude, but things got better about a month or so before we hit 4. *knocks on wood*

  • @junebabyh Is it possible he needs more exercise? I’ve learned that my 3yo is like a hyperactive dog. I have to work him hard every day otherwise he’ll chew up the furniture and pee everywhere. JK, sort of. 😆 I try to give him 1-3 hrs of physical activity every day, be it the park or an indoor playground or riding bikes around the neighborhood.

Or could he be bored? Amazon has some cool STEM toys and Pinterest has endless learning and creative play ideas.

  • @junebabyh I only have one child and he turned 4 in September... I did not find that he magically was less crazy or less of a butthead. Same situation over here, I think because they are so smart, they know how to press ALL the buttons on purpose to see our reactions.

@stephanie123456 I am totally calling him butthead (in my mind) from now on!
@brownbaritsa Good call on the exercise. That is totally a smart idea. He's in daycare full time (at a wonderful place), so I know he spends a lot of time outside playing when the weather permits, but on the weekends he's much more balanced overall when we get outside. As for being bored... Yes, i think that is the exact problem, but I have all sorts of STEM toys and I am constantly throwing out ideas of things he can do and ways he can be a big boy helper and it seems the only thing that brings him true joy is being a jerk (er, butthead)!
@cmbt2 Counting down the days until his birthday! lol
  • @aprosch wow!!! That’s a lot to juggle! I took a break from school- mostly financial reasons but I give you props for doing it while 🤰 and amen to the coffee!! I feel like I drank too much coffee last pregnancy so I’m trying to do a small iced half calf each day and slowly wean to just 2-3 times per week
  • Due Date/W+D: EDD October 16th / 4 weeks + 2

    Other kiddos/ages: C is 4, A is almost 2
C is quiet, slow to speak, introspective, likes to lay down and play and build things.
A is CRAZY verbal (talking full sentences by 15 months, talks better than my 4 year old now), CRAZY energetic, loves to knock things down, and every single thought she has crosses her lips. Multiple times. At a loud volume. (LOL, I am making fun but she really is a great kid.)

Nails/Fails: My English level of my students (high school history) is much lower this year than usual because of a change to the required courses for ELL students, so my fail is that only 4 students total passed the test I gave today. But I'm not sure how to rectify it because it is a class with a standardized test at the end that they need to graduate. So I can't make the test more simple English, but I am struggling to help them understand. At the end of the day I know I can only do what I can do, and it may not be possible for someone with a 2nd grade reading level to pass a 10th grade reading level test, but it's super frustrating.

Rants/Raves/Dear Diary? My second kid still nurses All. Night. Long. I am exhausted. She is getting molars. It is a perfect storm for a sleepy mama.

Appointments? I haven't even called the midwife yet!! I think I'll call to make my annual well woman visit (and confirmation of pregnancy appt) on Monday assuming everything is still going well.

Questions? Inspired by above posts: HOW IN THE WORLD CAN ANYONE SURVIVE THIRD TIME MOTHERHOOD WITHOUT COFFEE? I am not even trying at this point. I am drinking a full 12 ounce cup every morning, caffeine or no. I'm going to buy some decaf to try to trick myself into stopping, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • @wintersong I don’t know how anyone can do motherhood period without coffee!

I will probably tell my kids right around Easter (about 8 weeks) because I want to tell them before other people.

  • Rants/Raves/Dear Diary? My 3.5 year old is driving me bonkers. Not listening, constantly tackling/pushing/kicking his brother, regression to having accidents (he is totally potty trained and has been for a good 8 months at least), fake crying. The only time he seems to be fine is when he's watching tv, but I can't have that all the time. I know he's only three and every blog, book, doctor etc who I consult just reminds me he's little and figuring it all out. But this is a very bright child. He was speaking full sentences (shockingly to us) before the age of two and his memory is super sharp, which is why I KNOW he knows better. He is capable of behaving. He just won't.

Questions? Any advice for my above rant?? Or do I just have wait until he turns 4? People tell me at 4 they magically mature.

Did he just start school? When my son was 3.5 he did many of the same things, like starting to wet the bed, and I am sure it was from the stress of being in preschool (aka daycare) all day for the first time. He is much better now at 4, I'd say things improved when he was about a month younger than 4. I'd avoid shaming for accidents even if its a behavioral thing instead of an emotional or physical one. Also sometimes kids get constipated, it makes it harder to hold pee, and it can affect behavior too because they are vaguely uncomfortable.

I think a lot of people wait because 9 months is a heck of a long time for a kid to wait for a brother or sister. So even though I'm not waiting, I get it.

I’ll be telling mine ASAP! We’ve been here and done this and there is no waiting to tell them. My 1st appt is 2.14 and we’re struggling to wait til then. I brushed my 10 yr olds hair yesterday & she kissed my belly and said “I love your baby belly!” And my 4 yr old yelled at my stomach later in the day “I love you baby, hurry up and grow so you can come out!” We haven’t said a word! I guess all the vomiting has tipped them off. I’m just surprised they haven’t come out and asked me. I really wanted to surprise them on Valentine’s Day ❤️
  • Hey STM+ mamas. I need advice because I'm super stressing over here right now and I know it's not good but I need to rant too.

Just got a call from my mom who was picking up DS (almost 4.5 y/o) from "preschool" (it's an early childhood education class for kids through our local city) and DS was very naughty today. Last year, we had to start volunteering in his class because DS would have massive breakdowns during the day for various reasons (most often related to sharing toys) and he would scream/cry/throw tantrums that the teachers were unwilling to kind of put up with (they aren't trained teachers, they are "recreation specialists"). He's been doing better but this is getting so frustrating because I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? We started reading a book called "Billy Bully" on the nights before he has class and I try to point out to him the not-so-nice behaviors and ask him if when the character isn't sharing if he's being a nice boy or a naughty boy, and he knows what the good boy behaviors are. I think that when he gets upset, he reacts without thinking and can't control himself. He's so frigging smart (like can recite 'Pete the Cat and his white shoes' by heart), I don't get it.

    Any suggestions??  :'(:'(:|:#:s

That’s exactly why I don’t want to tell them until much later on 🙈 but mine are just turned 4 and not even 2, so they’re pretty oblivious to what’s going on *phew*

they’ve been a boss baby kick, though, so who knows. Maybe they know and just don’t have the words? I dunno.

  • @stephanie123456 I might not be the best person to give advice considering my kid is being such a "butthead" right now. But I will say when I broached the topic of empathy with our pediatrician she suggested watching shows like Daniel Tiger, where the child can imagine himself as the characters. It works in real life half the time I would say--when DS1 lashes out sometimes I say "What would Daniel Tiger do?" and he sings the answer. Done enough times it does kind of sink in. Books with a similar message is a great idea, too. Another idea is that maybe he needs a school with more structure. We are in a wonderful, loving, full-time daycare, which has been amazing, but I am moving him to a real pre-K in September. I kind of think he's too comfortable where he is now and he runs the show with his current caretakers. I'm so sorry though. I feel for you.
  • @junebabyh Part of me wants to move him somewhere else. But we are really limited for finances so this place within our budget (I guess you get what you pay for). He's really only got until September, because at that point he will be going into TK (transitional kindergarten) which will help a lot since it's "real school" with teachers who will know how to assist better. But I like your ideas about the Daniel Tiger.  <3

  • Hi all! I am new to the O19 group.

    Due Date/W+D:10/20, 3w6d

    Other kiddos/ages: DS age 2 1/2

Nails/Fails: We've had such cold snowy weather lately. My big fail lately has been letting DS watch WAY too much tv when we're cooped up at home. He's just not into independent play lately so the only way I can get anything done around the house or get a minute to myself is to let him watch tons of Curious George or the Lion King over and over. But my biggest nail is that I've taken him out to do pretty good indoor activities when I can to give him some more fun and excitement. Last night we took him to Dave & Buster's. He's too young to really play the games but he just ran around checking everything out and had a blast. Tomorrow we're doing a bouncy house place.

Rants/Raves/Dear Diary? My best pair of jeans (and pretty much the only non-leggings pants I have that fit) have just ripped a hole in the thigh. But it seems dumb to buy new jeans when I'll be needing maternity clothes in a few months anyway, so I'm just going to roll with the iron-on patches for as long as I can.

    Appointments? Not yet.

    Questions? Not yet.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being a parent? Just the love you receive from your kids. DS is a toddler and he loves so openly and freely at this age. I know he'll be more buttoned-up as he gets older. But at this stage it's nice to just soak up all the hugs and snuggles and the feeling of being needed.
  • I found out yesterday that our current daycare center is now full for infants until winter 2021! These babies will be 15/16 months old by then. It’s just so crazy to me! I basically had to secure our spot the moment I got my bfp to make sure we had one when needed, and we snagged the last one 😳😬

  • Had my first holy crap moment last night. I think DS (newly 2 years old) might have had his first bad dream. He started crying out about 2 hours after his beftime, which he never does so I went to check on him. I could tell he was super scared for some reason and it just broke my heart! I rocked and cuddled him in the glider for a while and it hit me like a ton of bricks that if we do get to have this baby my heart will literally be in two seperate pieces then! That thought just scared the crap out of me. Its hard enough caring so much about one tiny human when you only have so much control over things that will happen to them. Adding a second just feels like it will be emotional chaos. I have never wanted something so badly but also been terrified to actually get it.

  • Daniel Tiger is AMAZING. I haven't been able to get DD2 into him as much as DD1 but the tunes are still sung a lot around the house and I honestly love him, too. FFFC?

I'm not telling my kids they're getting a sibling until I tell work. Because damn it, DD1 will yell it the second she steps foot into her DC and no thank you to that.

As for DC, fortunately this baby will get a sibling spot in our current DC. In Germany kids over 12 months are guaranteed a DC spot but that just means that the city needs to offer a spot in a DC within city limits, not in a DC close to home or work. Since our DC is part of our research institute we got lucky - other parents in our town have to do the BFP pee stick race to register.

It’s hard to imagine, but your heart doesn’t separate, it doubles in size. The moment your second child is laid on your chest you immediately have room for both in your heart. And your relationship with your oldest does change, but in amazing ways. You will still get to rock DS1 in the glider in the middle of the night sometimes. I did last night and my oldest is almost four now!  BTW, it is chaos, haha, but not emotional chaos. It’s a regular circus in my house most days! But I promise there is room in your heart for both.
This. There are nights I need to go cuddle DS1 in the middle of the night. There’s room for two ☺️

    Other kiddos: 2DD and 1DS ages 6,4, and 3.

Nails/Fails. I’m much more exhausted and cranky right now and I feel bad for my kiddos that I have less patience. However the last two months we have spent so much more quality family time which has been amazing.

Rants/Raves/Dear Diary: I know that most of our friends and family aren’t going to understand why we wanted more children and I am very sad about it. Even though they all knew we wanted more I know they won’t be as excited as I would hope.

Appointments: My first appointment is March 18th

GTKY: My favorite part of being a parent is watching my children be the kind people that I hoped they would be. I also love all of the snuggles.

  • Due Date/W+D:
    10/14... 5w+0d

    Other kiddos/ages:
DS is a little over 15 months

    Nails/Fails:
Have been struggling with DS STTN consistently. Come to find out it's due to our scheduling which we originally thought was awesome. I'm home on Mondays with him and then Tuesdays he alternates between grandparents, but they often take him Monday night and have him sleep over. Just found out recently that he's been walking in the middle of the night at both sets of grandparents, and both have just been taking him into the bed with them. He wakes because at home he sleeps in a crib, but in Pack'n'Plays at the g-rents. Of course, now if he wakes at home, he just wants to come to bed with us. By the end of the week we get him to mostly self soothe again, but all of a sudden our sleep training struggle is making more sense. We just haven't hit upon a solution yet. Definitely fail.

    Rants/Raves/Dear Diary?
This little man has been hitting so many of his marks early, it's just so wonderful to watch. He's smart, sweet, thoughtful and funny (on purpose!) Though SO and I of course assume that means the second will be pure struggle. We just don't feel we could possibly be that lucky twice.

    Appointments?
Olive Garden. Like now. Oh, and I guess I see the doctor for confirmation tomorrow.

    Questions?
    None right now.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being a parent?
The full squeeze hugs, the open mouth slobbery kisses (lol, he still hasn't figured out to close it) the precious baby laughter. And so much the watching him learn. My brain explodes at least twice a week over the "I can't believe he's doing/ saying/ trying/ succeeding at that".

  • Hello hello!

    Due Date/W+D: edd is 10/09/19.  5w3d

    Other kiddos/ages: Daughter, 5.

Nails/Fails: Maintaining a decent exercise activity level.  I'm proud of that.  Fails... I just feel behind in adulting right now lol.  Our house is a mess and 2019 may shape up to be a big transition year - pregnancy, hopefully new home.

Rants/Raves/Dear Diary? A sinkfull of dirty dishes I get to tackle when I get home since someone (cough cough DH) can't manage to clean up as they go.

Appointments? First u/s is Friday AM.  I'm really nervous and hope all is well.

Questions? None for now, but I honestly can't remember feeling this uncomfortable (crampy, bloated, tired).

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being a parent?
  • @christis8 when I told the MW last time that I was crampier than I remembered, her comment was that I was going to cramp more and harder than I remembered with my first 🤷🏼‍♀️
