Please share your tips & tricks to help each other navigate the woes of first tri such as: nausea, bloat, heartburn, clothing challenges, food aversions, quitting coffee, etc.
Coffee—1-2 cups a day is still within limits (100-200 mg, depending on who's recommending). See this article with helpful charts for Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, home brews, etc. https://www.thebump.com/a/caffeine-during-pregnancy Decaf is an option, especially if you go with a rich-tasting brand like Lavazza or Illy. Celestial Seasonings Teas makes a delicious caffeine-free black tea called Roastaroma that tastes similar to coffee. There are also chicory-based drinks that taste like coffee (minus the coffee beans), such as Kaffree Roma and Pero.
Nausea—You can ask your doc for medication if the nausea is severe. You can also make your own version of Diclegis to lessen nausea. Many doctors will recommend this (full disclosure: I am NOT a doctor, please talk to yours before trying this). Take 25mg B6 vitamin with 10mg Unisom (Cut a Unisom tab in half). Some like to take the B6 alone (can take up to 75mg/no more than 100 mg/day), adding the Unisom only when absolutely necessary since it can cause drowsiness.
Clothing tip! To help extend the life of your regular jeans (before the maternity pants fit well), use a hair tie and wear a longer top/get a belly band (which is basically like a tube top for your belly).
I diffuse/take internally peppermint essential oil. It’s helped me with my nausea. Just make sure you get a good brand. Lots of brands have chemicals added to them. If it says it can’t be taken internally than don’t use it at all!
Here are some things I've found to help curb MS - room temp water (cold makes makes me even more nauseous) and never letting myself get hungry. MS gets worse when my stomach is empty. Hopefully they helps some of you out there too!
Nausea: Seabands helped me a lot for my first two pregnancies. Heartburn: I carried a bottle of tums with me at all times, lol! Coffee: I wasn't a big coffee drinker with my first two. Currently I drink 16 oz a day. I am slowly cutting that size down. It's hard though because two kids and insomnia.
This isn't a real tip, but just a reminder to go clean all your toilets right now You never know when/if MS is going to hit and a nice, clean toilet makes a surprise puke a whole lot less miserable.
I also leave a bag of cheerios or crackers on my night table so I can munch on a few before getting out of bed to help curb the AM queasies.
The MS hasn't quite hit me full-on yet, but I don't want to be caught off guard! I bought a box of small garbage bags (like the ones you'd use in a bathroom trash can) and I've stored a couple anywhere I frequent where I may not be able to get to a toilet in time: in my nightstand, the glove compartment in my car and in hubby's car, in my desk at work, etc.
A friend swears by Sour Patch Kids for the MS. I found out about it after my 1st pregnancy so I haven't tried it yet. I was only ever queasy last time, but making sure I ate something every couple hours helped keep it at bay. It seems worse/ earlier this time, so we will see.
@themadcamel I took just spoonful when the reflux got so bad I couldn't handle it (maybe do it earlier than that?) and within minutes it was gone. Warning: it did come back as soon as I ate something else but at least I know I have something to go to now!
I spoke with my naturopathic doctor today about my nausea. She’s having me add electrolytes to some of my daily water intake for a couple of weeks. She said nausea is often associated with dehydration in pregnancy. So today before the nausea really hit, I started drinking water (probably 30-40 oz) over an hour, and I felt SO much better! I was completely dehydrated and that was making everything worse! So drink up, and add some electrolytes! Now I’m keeping up with the water intake better throughout the day, and not chugging it all at once! Oh, and I’m sticking with room temperature water so it’s easy on the body😊
Coffee: f that, I'm drinking my coffee. 200 ish mg is fine imo. Nausea: All the ginger. Ginger tea, ginger candies. Preggo pops. Making sure you eat something every couple of hours. b6 + 1/2 unisom was my jam last time. Heatbrun: didn't happen till my 3rd tri last time. When it was horrible, the one thing that made it better was ice cream. Didn't need a lot, just a couple of spoonfuls (but who will really limit that). Bloat: embrace it. Drink a shit ton of water. Waterminder is a great app if you're having a hard time remembering to drink enough. Clothing challenges: leggings are always the answer.
For the last 4 weeks, I cannot stand to look at, cook, smell, or eat any meat. When my food aversion is strong, or when I need protein and a way to curb morning sickness, this ginger scrambled eggs really comes to my rescue. Heat 1-2 tbsp vegetable oil in pan, take 1 thumb sized slice of fresh ginger, crush using back of knife. Fry ginger in oil til light brown. Scramble 3 eggs, seasoned with salt and black pepper. Feel free to add green onions, super YUM. I have this with a side of Japanese dressed salad or with a side of rice.

Nausea: Sucking on sour hard candy helped me. Jolly ranchers especially.
Has anyone tried the ginger peach tea by Pink Stork? It's sitting in my Amazon cart.
Heartburn: I carried a bottle of tums with me at all times, lol!

And I make 2 eggs and scarf them down as soon as I wake up! I am having better days now. Maybe it’s the protein?

I have gotten some relief with the B6+half tab of unisom. Sleepy but at least I can function.
