Re: GTKY: What do you do for a living?

  • Wow! There are some badass woman here! So impressed with everyone.

I am a professional pianist and piano teacher. I'm actually freaking out because I have two weeks of performances right in the middle of when morning sickness is most common. Hoping it doesn't hit in the middle of a performance.
Wow - a professional pianist was always my dream! This is so wonderful to read what all of you do.

I'm an archaeologist and just finishing up my thesis for my MA in historical archaeology. Hoping to finalize/defend before any crazy symptoms really kick in! Would hate to have morning sickness during my defense!

  • I have a part-time real estate photography business ( I swear, it’s a thing) and I stay home with my 14 month old twins. I’m also an ex teacher... tough job, ladies!
  • @knewton785 we just bought a house and can I honestly say that I was shocked we didn’t get into an offer battle. But I think the main reason is that the photos of the house were SO TERRIBLE that people just didn’t even bother. The realtor had zero idea how to use a camera. You do the house buying market a great service, my dear.
  • I'm a 3rd grade teacher!
  • @knewton785 I agree with @cmdesigner I have seen the effects of people who don’t know what they are doing! I love the bathroom mirror pictures. They always give it away if someone isn’t using a professional. 😂
  • @cmdesigner hello from a fellow designer! My brains already on the “what pregnancy related things do I get to design” track hehe

I have a Bachelor's in Archeology & a Master's in Medieval History. I worked in the Archeology field for a bit before I went to St Andrews for my Master's. I have since come back to the States where I met my husband & eventually became a SAHM. I still love doing historical research when I have time.
  •  Such an impressive group here! @cmdesigner @bluepeach565 I am a designer as well. I do shapewear/intimate apparel design for a large company in NYC. A little nervous about how this will all go with commuting on the horrible NYC system and just how unforgiving I feel like my industry is for moms which is especially odd considering the industry is mostly women (at least in my world). Will have to take it step by step and stand up for what I need!

I 100% understand the commute. However, I will raise you one and say I moved back to the Hudson Valley (I grew up here) to get out of the NJ Transit hellscape. Even with MTA in all its disfuctional glory...I still choose this destiny over NJ ;)

Honestly, I feel like the US is just unforgiving to working moms in general. But I do think bring a creative in this climate brings and extra level of concern to me as well. I won’t be able to drop everything after the baby comes for a last minute VIP design project that falls on my team. That creates a bit of a contentious environment.
  • I’m an ultrasound technologist! I love it, aside from finding MMCs, fetal demise and probable cancers
  • I'm a proofreader for school textbooks and assessments.

Awesome! I just finished my FNP program in December and I’m taking boards in a couple weeks 😁
  • I work in personal finance
  • Such interesting jobs/careers!

I'm also a teacher. This is my third year in third grade; I taught first grade before that.
  • I'm a mental health counselor for the department of corrections. It's grown to be a huge passion for me!
  • @cmdesigner @graciehippo19 if you ever need to complain about the mta or the commute - I'm here for you! I just moved to New Orleans after 11+ years living in Brooklyn (though my husband and I are back and forth constantly, we have lots of family in NY). Several of my friends were pleasantly surprised by how many people offered them seats on the subway, at least later on in their pregnancies! May the MTA gods shine on you both :P

  • So many interesting jobs! I’m a pharmacist at a large teaching hospital.
  • This is a smart bunch!
Both DH and I are civil engineers, that's kind of how we met. I'm currently working on a construction site near home and will be for the next 6 months. Not looking forward to MS there that's for sure, but also trying to make extra sure that we're safe.

@cmdesigner Wow so you are commuting from the Hudson valley? That’s impressive! We are hoping to move to that area after baby is born but more like north western CT close to the NY border. I may change careers since I don’t know what I could do up there in terms of fashion but we have both had enough of the city. It’s good to hear you are enjoying living up there!

@bluepeach565 yes! I am that girl tapping people on the shoulder and pointing at the pregnant lady standing in front of them while they play candy crush :D As soon as I start to feel sick I’m going to switch to the ferry but it’s like 3X the price so I’m holding out for as long as possible! I hope you’re enjoying New Orleans I have always wanted to visit there.
  • @hallie619 Good luck on your boards! I'm a FNP too.
  • I'm a research assistant at a urologic research clinic! We primarily do prostate cancer and bladder cancer studies.
  • Such an impressive group of ladies!!! I work in fisheries management for the Federal government.
  • I'm a pediatric occupational therapist.  I will probably stop working after this baby and be a SAHM/do some per diem weekend shifts for a while.  Daycare is just too expensive and I will won't make enough to justify what we would pay for 2 in daycare.
  • I’m a nanny! I currently care for two girls that are 4 years old and 21 mos old. I sort of specialize in infant and toddler care, and am SO looking forward to caring for my own little one now that I’ve honed ALL the skills!
  • I am a Nurse Practitioner. Recently left pediatric private practice for an administrative position as VP of Clinical Ops for a healthcare organization. Big change but I like it!
  • @aca12017 I was a special ed teacher before my first and now do home ABA cases. I’m right there with you on the cost of daycare. It’s insane and I’m lucky I’m able to provide these services in the late afternoon. Doing the home cases allows me to keep my foot in my career and gives me a chance to get out of the house solo!! That’s great that you’re able to do per diem as well!
  • Right before I found out that I was pregnant I was a Contract Specialist for a not for profit that had Head Start and School Age programs for youth ages 5-18...I monitored their food program and made sure that all contractual obligations were being met right up until my Supervisor started joking about how she was going to try and either make a one of the pregnant employees quit or post her position when she went on maternity leave. I was so mentally distraught by the things the management would do and say that I sent a letter to the CEO, HR, and CC'd the Supervisor in on my letter of resignation. Now I'm training to become a city employee with better benefits. B)
  • So many impressive careers here! I’m an inventory analyst for an international retailer.
  • I am a property manager :) It is so hard not telling anyone on my team! Luckily I haven't been sick at work yet.
