[Trying to Stay] Fit Mama Monday 1/7

Hey mamas who are trying to stay fit! I know it’s getting harder as babies grow bigger and the weather is getting colder for a lot of us. How are your health and fitness goals going? How are you keeping up and getting it done? What are your biggest challenges now that we are in the third trimester?

Re: [Trying to Stay] Fit Mama Monday 1/7

  • How are your health and fitness goals going: I am continuing to head to gym around 3 times/week and I try do something active every day, but I really need to focus on my flexibility. I feel super stiff. Being my first pregnancy, I didn't know what to expect, but I am mostly happy with where I am at physically.

How are you keeping up and getting it done: I get support from MH to hold me accountable. Keep healthy food and snacks on hand at the house and at work to prevent from eating out or being tempted by food at the office. Force myself to go straight to the gym/yoga mat when I get home from work instead of hitting the couch. Haha.

What are your biggest challenges in 3rd trimester? I mentioned mental health in my last update, but that continues to be a challenge for me. As in, not feeling guilty when all I can manage is a 30 min walk. Or allowing myself to have a guilt-free cookie. Especially now as I get bigger, I can feel myself slowing down and I have to be mindful that I am not too hard on myself and that too much stress is not part of a healthy lifestyle.

  • @lalalauren15 it’s definitely important to give yourself grace as we get later in pregnancy! It can be a hard thing to do, but so important (and something I have to remind myself of all the time).

How are your health and fitness goals going? Meh - last week wasn’t a complete wash, but it wasn’t great either. This week isn’t off to the best start as I just stress ate chocolate... But at least it’s looking like it won’t rain on my work-from-home days, so maybe my walks will actually happen.

How are you keeping up and getting it done? Honestly have really been struggling with this recently. With bad weather and lots of other things on the todo list, I’ve not been great.

What are your biggest challenges now that we are in the third trimester? Hip, low back and pelvic pain are making it difficult to motivate myself to work out.

  • @lelkcot I love how you put that - "give yourself grace". And I have definitely had some stress induced chocolate indulgences myself. Haha.
  • How are your health and fitness goals going? I've been doing better this past week and more active. For some reason we are having a delay in winter, so it feels more like spring here right now. Typically around this time of year we are covered in lots of snow and it's really cold! We did some walking outside over the weekend because of the nice weather. DD1 is also convinced it's summer so she keeps asking to go outside. Last week I also went back to yoga and it felt really good. Besides that just a lot of nesting going on!
How are you keeping up and getting it done? I just keep my long term goals in mind and remember where I started. I want to make sure things go smoothly with delivery and recovery and I know staying fit last time helped so much with that. I've also packed the house with healthy snacks to keep up with my pregnancy munchies.
What are your biggest challenges now that we are in the third trimester? Just slowing down and encountering some complications due to random high blood pressure readings. Some days I cannot do anything but put my feet up, so I've been trying to take advantage of the days I have more energy and feel good.

  • How are your health and fitness goals going: I've been making it to class at the gym 4x a week, but I am hating it more and more each time I step through that door. I usually LOVE taking these classes - I do not recognize the grouch that stares back at me in the mirrors, swearing loudly, as I walk, bike and lift weights.

How are you keeping up and getting it done: Let's be honest. I am forcing it at this point. Period. It hurts, I'm tired.  I don't want to be there. There are fit people all around me when I go, doing things I used to be able to do, doing things I want to be doing and can't. It's basically the fact that I am so stubborn that I refuse to give in this close to the end.

What are your biggest challenges in 3rd trimester? My biggest challenges are just my body giving up on me, and then my attitude based on that. Oh how things have changed since my second trimester "I feel awesome and hardly have a bump yet" posts...  Also, I can't stop eating fruit popsicles (hello, raspberry Solero!) which certainly generates a need to get to the gym!
  • I am really relating to all of these updates this week. I am still getting outside for walks and keeping up with the prenatal yoga, but that’s about it for me these days. I am also trying to find the grace to let it go at this late stage of pregnancy, but it isn’t easy.

It’s happened to me maybe 3 times in the last month that my 3 mile walk brings on contractions to the point that I have to lay down for an hour or two afterwards and I feel like I got hit by a truck. I mentioned it to my midwife and she told me to really dial back the intensity. It made me laugh to think about walking less aggressively 🤣
  • @maggiemadeit the walking portion of the class I take is what gets me, too!  Go figure?!   :D
  • I have done exercise 4x/week for the last 3 weeks, but at my check up last Thursday I had gained 10 lbs since the one 2 weeks prior 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ so that's great for my motivation.

I'm still trying but it's definitely getting harder mentally and physically, because I'm tired and don't want to. Walking the dog up  my driveway leaves me out of breath. My only motivation is hopefully stamina for labor.
  • @maggiemadeit yes! I usually aim for 3 mile walks and it’s taking me longer these days because I find myself having to slow down to adjust for pelvic and hip pain!
  • @maggiemadeit It always surprises me how restrictive I have to be with being active now. I keep saying to myself that I was running 9 miles at the beginning of this pregnancy...now I can barely walk .5! But then again I am weeks away from giving birth at this point, so it's ok to be lazy right now.

  • @BuckeyeNut05 are you still rowing? It’s getting more and more uncomfortable for me with every class. During the tornado today, I legit felt like it was a struggle to breathe (obvi not a good sign) during the 3 min row for distance. Wondering if I should just start using the strider instead...

How are your health and fitness goals going? Last week made it to my group classes 5x, which was essential stress relief. This week, because of an insane work calendar and deadlines, I’ll be lucky to make it to 4, but really hoping I’ll find a way to squeeze an extra couple in. Nutrition-wise, I’m struggling. I generally try to eat healthy but find myself indulging more than normal, especially since the holidays. Gaining weight at a more rapid rate ao def need to get my diet in check.

How are you keeping up and getting it done? I guess the silver lining to being overwhelmed with work is that it forces me in the gym! Haha

What are your biggest challenges now that we are in the third trimester? Modifying and listening to my body. I push myself too hard and then leave workouts begging for baby movement cause I’m worried I created unnecessary risk. And then once I get home, my body is super sore and hating me. Hoping I find the right balance for the remainder of the third tri.

  • @beachbaby0523 I had to stop rowing about two weeks ago. My form was very off since my knees had to go outside of my arms, and every time I went forward I could feel the reflux in my throat from my stomach getting squeezed a little too tight.

I've been subbing the bike for the rower, and so far, so good. I'm impressed you are still rowing!

I had had to skip yesterday because I couldn't fit it into my schedule (not sad I missed a 3 min row for distance) so my next class is Thursday!
  • I am legitimately considering napping instead of working out at lunch today. Third trimester problems 🤣
  • @BuckeyeNut05 my knees are super wide too so I should probably switch it up too. Have fun on Thursday!

@maggiemadeit a nap sounds like a genius idea!
  • @maggiemadeit I didn't replace a workout with a nap yesterday but I did replace a free "work hour" with a nap. I felt so much better afterwards.
