Cold Remedies

HELP! I’m 11w 2d and I started to feel off yesterday (sore throat, just bleh). I woke up this morning with a full on head cold. The only thing I felt safe about using was a little Vick’s vapor rub under my nose. I usually diffuse some essential oils to help my symptoms, but I have no idea what’s safe. And I obviously can’t take cold meds 😭. I’m a teacher and go back to work tomorrow. Anyone have anything that works for them?

There are medications that are perfectly safe to take while pregnant. Call your OB and ask what they recommend as it can vary.

Tylenol, benedryl and sudefed are the usual recommendations. My OB also okay’d mucinex after the others didn't do anything.

My kids have given me all kinds of fun stuff and I've been on multiple antibiotics the last few months due to severe colds and sinus infections.

  • My winter cold/flu season go-to is homemade elderberry syrup. It's fairly simple to make and you can take some every day to build your immunity or every 2-3 hours to shorten the cold or flu. My husband and 2 girls have been fighting coughs and colds for over 2 weeks and I haven't gotten more than a scratchy throat that was gone in a day. I give it to my girls too (just don't use it for infants under one because of the honey). I took it during my last pregnancy also. You can check with your dr but I feel it's perfectly safe! Here's the link if you're interested.  Also, I don't usually add fresh spices, just the powder. Or yoy can totally leave them out since the elderberry and raw honey are the most important ingredients.
