When did you introduce peanut butter?

I am DESPERATE to give her PB- she's not into meat, and I'm bored of chick peas and black beans!  I unwittingly gave her some of my Pad Thai when she was 7 months and she didn't have a reaction to the peanut sauce, but I thought it was subsequent exposures... were you scared to?

Re: When did you introduce peanut butter?

  • I haven't introduced it yet.  Part of it is because I'm scared and the other part is because it's still on my pedi's "no-no" list.

  • I did at 18 mos. even though my pedi said not until 2 (that was the AAP rec.), but right around 18 mos. I read in Parents magazine that they were not making that recommendation anymore and that they've found no link to waiting until 2 and if the child ends up having an allergy. No problems by the way and my 21 month old loves PB.
  • my MIL gave him a peanut butter cracker the other day, thinking that I had already given my DS peanut butter. We both just watched him for a few hours and he was perfectly fine. He loved it.
  • I introduced it this month (they are 1). ?They have had straight pb, pb in a smoothie, and pb kids cliff bars. ?It is not an everyday staple, but I predict I will start pb&j fairly soon as a lunch option.

  • I gave my foster son peanut butter when he arrived at 14 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics is no longer recommending that parents wait until the child is 2 and even suggest peanut butter as a healthy toddler snack. People don't have an allergic reaction the first time they are exposed. It would most likely show after the 2nd exposure. HTH.
  • I haven't yet but doubt it's an issue as we have no family history.

  • Thanks!   I may work up the nerve to try it soon.  Neither of us has any allergies, so I'm sure she's fine!

  • I haven't yet and I'm not planning on giving it to her until she's at least 2 (as per my pedi's rules), possibly even longer than that.  I'm scared.  There are terrible nut allergies on my side of the family and it's not worth the risk to me.
  • considering the nation wide peanut butter re-call, i am going to avoid it for awhile.
  • Ooh, Sweet Lady, good point!   Maybe I'll hold off and ask at her 15 month appt...

  • Here's the latest thing I've read about it and the AAP opinion

we introduced it to dd by the time she was 16 m/o. ds got some before he was 1 thanks to dd (oh and dh.. yeah, he gave them some shrimp and scallops while I was at work too... I. could. have. killed. him.   ... my mom and granny are highly allergic to shellfish, which sucks since we grew up on the gulf of mexico.)

  • I fed mine some pecan/cashew nut butter around 14m & dd had a very scary allergic reaction to it. ?(The reaction was the 2nd or 3rd time she ate it.) ?I had to take them both to a ped allergist afterwards to be tested. ?She is allergic to cashews & pistachios. ?Now I have an epi pen for her that I carry everywhere. Before giving nuts,?BE SURE that you have children's Benedryl liquid in the house, just in case, & ask your pedi what the recommended dose for your child's weight would be. ?If you notice a skin reaction, give dc Benadryl. ?If he/she is having difficulty breathing, give him/her Benedryl & call 911. ?I asked the allergist what to do about other high allergy potential foods that they hadn't tested positive for, but that I was still nervous about (eggs, peanuts, etc.), & she told me that once I introduce a new food, to just keep giving it to them. ?She said that the absolute worst thing that you can do is to give them a little bit, wait days/weeks, then give it again. ?I am still terrified to give them any more nuts, & have not since dd's reaction!
  • 13 months I think. She has a PB & J sandwich every other day now.
  • Well, we were told over and over again not to introduce it until they were 3, but apparently H listens to the ped as well as he listens to me. He gave them PB cups shortly after Halloween- they were 14m. My mother gave them pistachio salad at TGing-- I said, "woman!! What are you doing!! No nuts until they are 3!!!" H goes, "what? we're really doing that? I gave them reeces cups last month and it didn't kill them...." Angry I was FURIOUS. I won't give them straight PB but they have now had bites of PB cookies, too.

  • Ditto about the AAP's new recommendation not to delay if you don't want. ?J is just now 1, but we will be introducing soon, once his poor drool rash from teething clears up and we can see if he has a reaction. ?We also were told that anaphylactic reactions in children this young are extremely rare with first or second exposure, that we need to watch for rashes or GI problems. ?

  • I gave it to both of my kids at age 1.  We didn't have any food allergies in the family, so I wasn't too worried.  I actually preferred to give it to them at that age- in a controlled environment at home (with benadryl on hand)- so that we weren't caught by surprise at a later date not knowing they were allergic.  My pedi was fine w/them getting it at 1.  My brother, however, snapped at me that in CA they don't give it until they are 3.  Well excuse me!  He was really snotty about it & it pi$$ed me off!  I digress :o)  Use your best judgement & if you want to give it to her, do it!
  • I gave DD almond butter this morning and she loved it.  Pedi said it was a better alternative to peanut butter.
  • My 10 month old has not had it yet and I gave my 2 1/2 year old her first PB&J sandwich this past summer when she was 2.  Needless to say, she doesn't love it but I don't offer it very often since the baby can't eat it yet and they can't have it at school since one of the kids has a peanut allergy so the center is peanut free.  She did have some of my pad thai between her 1st and 2nd b-days though and was always fine.  Come to think of it, my 10 month old may have had some of my pad thai noodles too already.

  • at around 12 mo we started to test the waters a bit. A bite of a pb cookie, a piece of my pb toast etc. No reactions yet. So I think soon we will actually give him a serving.
  • DS started having PB around 1 year.  There was a recent study that showed that avoiding peanuts for 2+ years actually makes a child ten times more likely to develop a peanut allergy.  DS loves peanut butter on toast.
  • our pedi told us we could give dd everything we eat at one... just make sure it's bite size
