Re: Pregnancy Comfort Thread

  • Hi ladies, I didn’t want this to get lost in randoms, and I’m sure I’m not the only one with questions about this stuff, so here’s a thread! Sorry if it’s cluttery

My question is in regards to sleep and pillows. I’ve been having an issue being comfortable at night with my hips and legs. After awhile
of laying on my side my hip and knees start to ache, and it spreads out from there. So I roll onto my back while asleep, but that stretches out and makes the RLP way worse, and obviously at some point I won’t be able to do that anyways. Is there a way I can use pillows to fix this? I have two regular sized sleeping ones and a couple throw pillows. I don’t want to have to buy a giant pillow if I don’t have to. Also, if anyone knows, I’ve always heard it’s bad to sleep with a pillow between your knees, but that’s the only suggestion I can find online. What gives? Is that suddenly not a problem in pregnancy?

I never liked pregnancy pillows because all of the ones I’ve seen, there’s a part for you to put your head on too. And I’m very particular about my pillows for my head, hah. My solution with my son as I got farther along in pregnancy and super uncomfortable: king size pillow between my legs so it supported all the way down my legs, pillow behind my back for support, and thin pillow under my bump. And of course one for my head. I basically took up the whole bed with my nest but that’s about all that worked! All I need currently is the pillow between my legs otherwise my hips get super sore, but I’m sure the nest will return as I get bigger! Just curious because I’ve never heard that, why is a pillow between your knees bad??
  • @tuxielove93 I ended up just getting a maternity pillow because the pillow between my legs would always get moved because I must shift a bit while I was sleeping. The maternity pillow is the only thing that just holds it all in place and supports my legs, hips and back. Sorry I know that’s not really what you asked. I got the Pharmedoc maternity pillow and it has been amazing. I even put it in its own suitcase and flew it with me on vacation this week. Ha. I think the reason it helps though is that it gives me something to hug so it keeps my shoulders even with my hips being supported by the pillow. Then the pillow behind keeps me from turning over and the head portion keeps my spine in complete alignment with everything. So if you are going to do it with pillows maybe make sure you try to use all the same types so they kee everything on the same plane. Hope that helps a bit
  • You forgot cookies. I'm finding comfort in cookies. ;D

Seriously though, I find putting one pillow between my knees and another between my ankles to be comfortable. the pillows shouldn't be too thick. You may be able to replicate the position with a comforter too.

I am ok sleeping for the most part. It's walking up the hill and up the stairs that's taking my breath away already...not sure there's a remedy for that, though.
  • @pbtoast   Something about hip alignment? Truthfully now that I’m thinking about it, I think I heard it from my grandmother, so maybe she’s wrong, or it’s outdated. I’m gonna give the pillow between my legs a shot and see if it helps

@chrssyms I’m just being cheap and don’t want to buy a $60 pillow to use for a couple months 😂 I think the problem is how much wider my hips are in comparison to my small (for now) waist and then the weight of my leg over the other leg with the difference in how my hips are now. Maybe I just need to go a chiro for adjustment really. I’m gonna try the Pillow between my knees first and go from there

@marijaa333 lol I did forget cookies. I’m currently obsessed with chocolate covered pretzels. I’m melting the chocolate in the microwave and putting the pretzels in and eating it all immediately with a fork so it’s hot and melty and OMG. I can’t stop. Totally gonna try the folded blanket thing if the pillows are too thick ( which they might be because I like fat ones. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I am beyond restless at night sometimes. I am not in pain I am just annoyingly restless. Lay on left with pillow between legs and a body pillow behind  me... get restless roll onto back. Wake up on back get mad i am on back try right side with pillow under belly and preggo pillow behind back... then cat comes and decides it needs to be all up in my business... laying on my shoulder burying its head into my face or neck... grrr this is a new thing in the last few weeks. Its either that or laying partially on my belly and the pillow. I am also feeling claustrophobic by the pillows surrounding me.
  • I'm also just terribly restless. I'm averaging a full night of sleep every 3-4 days. I think just out of our exhaustion. I don't remember having so much trouble this early last time.
I am a big fan of the chiropractor though. I've never been when not pregnant but it saved me a lot of pain last time.
I've been debating about a pregnancy pillow this time because I'm so uncomfortable but I also am cheap and plan this to be my last pregnancy. So we will see.

Also I slept on my back my whole pregnancy last time. At about 33 weeks DH would wake me up and tell me to roll on my side. I almost killed him.
  • Rather rather than a pregnancy pillow (I didn’t love mine last time) I’m planning to get an old fashioned body pillow this time. Tuck it under my belly then between my knees and ankles. I definitely have never heard anything bad about a pillow between the knees. I sleep with one a lot even non pregnant. The idea is trying to keep your hip alignment neutral. But even “abducted” or knees wider than hips is usually ok too as long as it’s not too much!
  • Not feeling discomfort yet, but a pillow wedge for lumbar support saved my back my first two pregnancies. I used it in the car or home whenever I had to sit down for more than a few minutes. Definitely did the pillow between the legs at night. I also found a warmer bath before bed alleviated some of the aches and RLS. Being tired but not able to get comfortable and relax or sleep was the worst :/

  • I have knee issues on good days and having a pillow between actually makes it worse than not. I think the restriction of moving around doesnt help. I have found i can tolerate a thinner pillow between in hopes of keeping me on my side.  I might give up and sleep on an angle sitting up (sorta). So bloody annoying...
  • @tuxielove93 if it changes your mind, I ordered mine on Amazon and it was $39. So cheaper than $60. 😉 they have a c and u-shaped pillow.
  • I have been using DH as a body pillow lol, or I sleep with my leg bent resting on his back. I noticed having my legs spread with a pillow or DH as a rest (sorry it sound kind of perverse lol) helps.
  • I did get a leachco sleeper keeper last time and I still have it, but I didn't really use it until third tri to support my belly
  • I have a body pillow for now so I can easily roll side to side overnight. I still have a smaller pregnancy pillow that I used towards the end of my last pregnancy. I’m sure it’ll come out at some point. I used it behind my back mostly and still used the body pillow.

my pregnancy pillow has a detachable section and if I were to do it over, I would get a solid u shaped one. In at my mom’s for the holidays, and picked up a cheap body pillow, and a regular one between my knees, I’ve been way more comfortable than expected
  • @pigglesworth I have a U-shaped one ("Queen Rose", husband got it for me off Amazon) and it's amazing! I'm sleeping much better now - the pregnancy insomnia isn't 100% gone but I think it's helped. Would highly recommend!!
  • FIL agave DH and I a new mattress for Christmas. Ladies. The Lucid mattress has saved our sleep. My back hurts way less and I sleep like a brick.
