Re: Week 1 check-in - 12/24

  • Due date: 3/9

Appointments/questions: 3 hour glucose test on Friday and regular appointment/growth scan on 1/2/18

Rants/raves: Rave: I love Christmas and it was awesome to celebrate the last 3 days with family. We have one more on Saturday with my family I’m excited about that. DS was very sweet when we opened gifts. He even gave me and DH hugs while we opened gifts. It was very cute.

How are you feeling: I’m doing well considering we are in the third trimester. I have my fair share of aches and pains. BH have seemed to slow down some this week but my back pain is picking up. I have also had some period type cramping off and on this past week. I have been chalking up to stretching cramps. I also have an increase of discharge where I need to where a liner or change my underwear up to 3-4 times per day.

I’m also a bit anxious about the growth scan and our LO measuring ahead hopefully it’s nothing.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why?

I think this this is a neat question. We have a cabinet that my brother made us when we got married as a wedding gift, DS has a changing table/dresser that DH dad built, and we have the candy dish that was my grandmas growing up.

  • @mayoduck thanks for that! I know I asked in the questions about it too! I had a lot of complications with DS but he always measured right on track (was only 6 lbs. 12 oz 21 in) I never had any symptoms of the issues I had, and I only gained 7 lbs the whole pregnancy (because I lost so much in the first trimester). I may have GD again I have the 3 hr test on Friday but I haven’t gained an excessive amount this pregnancy either (only up 5 lbs total). I was a big baby over 9 lbs but only 18 in long lol. DH was small was like DS was. I can already tell that this LO is long I can feel him moving up by ribs and way down in my pelvis at the same time and I have a long waist as it is.
  • I'm surprised everyone seems to be getting a growth scan. Is it routine for your particular clinical practices or is everyone being recommended extra monitoring? My scan at week 32 was recommended only because LO has been measuring so big and because I have just enough fluid to be labeled 'polyhydramnios' so they wan to make sure that doesn't get worse too.
  • @mayoduck I didn't think I would be getting an ultrasound after 20 weeks but my midwife asked me last week if I wanted to schedule a growth scan which surprised me. She said it was totally optional and there was no real medical reason to do it because everything has been healthy with this pregnancy. I asked her if insurance would cover it and she told me yes, except for a few 'persnickety' providers and my insurance is pretty good. She wasn't pushing it by any means, but I got excited to see the kid again one more time before birth so I scheduled one. I never would have asked for it and feel a little silly because there's no medical reason to do it but I couldn't turn it down after it was offered!

    Due: March 2.

    Appointments/questions: regular prenatal next week.

Rants/raves: it was a good Christmas! Lots of people over, good food.

Feeling: large, achy at times. Just uncomfortable quite a bit. Some of the achiness at least is due to doing a lot over the holidays. Looking forward to being done being pregnant for awhile!

Favorite piece of decor: right now, it's these silver wire balls I bought years ago for Christmas decor. They're so beautiful and I love them. Also, my colored Christmas lights. We never had colored lights growing up, and I love them. Sometimes, right before bed, I'll turn off the lights and have them on and my contacts out, and I'll just stare at the fuzzy balls of colored light in my windows. Non-Christmas, probably the wall hanging my grandmother made. I've sort of themed all my colors for home decor around it.

ETA: No growth scans here. The only reason extra ultrasounds (beyond dating scan and anatomy scan) would be recommended/required/offered at my practice are if the baby is measuring 3+ weeks more or less than they should or if they can't tell by feel what the baby's position is late in the pregnancy (they wouldn't do it in early 30 weeks because there's still time for the baby to move.)
  • Due date: 3/7

    Appointments/questions: Next appointment on 1/3.

Rants/raves: My family and MH are just amazing people and I feel so thankful. I had a close friend get very bad news yesterday, and it just really put things into perspective. Holidays can be really stressful, but there's definitely been a lot more good than bad this year. That being said, I am kind of glad all the chaos is over.

How are you feeling: Emotional. Tired. Aches and pains. The crazy pregnancy dreams have picked back up this week. Nothing unexpected or too miserable, so I am counting myself lucky. However, I do feel like I could eat nonstop and still not be full. Haha.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? MH and I are slowly graduating to better décor, but most of our stuff we bought early on when we moved in together and were just starting out in the "real" world. So nothing too special. I do love this decorative sailboat we bought this year on our 1st anniversary on a trip to Annapolis. It was soon after we found out I was pregnant. Just a great and special day.
  • Due date: 3/6

Appointments/questions: regular appointment 1/3, and continuing at every other week until 2/11 where it becomes weekly. No other ultrasounds here as far as I know

Rants/raves: DH set up the crib and helped me plan out the rest of the nursery this weekend (and by that I mean bought some storage for his electronics in the nursery closet, and agreed to where I had already decided where I wanted to put things, lol). And my best friend is coming over this weekend to help me turn the shared office/'I don't know how to organize this, so let's put it here for now' room on Saturday! Hoping to get that done with her so that I can relax and not do big cleaning and reorganizing for the last 10 weeks of this pregnancy. Also, I posted this in random yesterday, I got a part time work from home job with flexible hours yesterday! It will be 20 hrs per week (with room for more if I want) on contract, but opportunity to become an employee and train people to do the same job after 6 months. My training starts this afternoon and will be 1-2 weeks depending on me and how much I put in at once (I'm going to try to do it in one week, since I don't have any patients booked in my regular job until 1/4).

How are you feeling: I am definitely waddling now, and either super hungry or way too full. It's hard to be comfortable on the couch, or to get up, or sleep deeply (so.... Pregnant!) but I have tried to stay consistently active. I set a goal of 4 days of workouts per week until baby, in hopes that it makes labor easier (if you guys read the trying to stay fit thread, I have subscription to prenatal friendly workouts through goodfortheswole.com $15/month for 5 workouts/week). I reached it last week, and have done 1 so far this week so I have time.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? I made about 90% of the art in our house (art major in college) so maybe a painting I made for DH on our first anniversary of one of our wedding photos. That, or our ketubah (which is basically a traditional Jewish wedding contract and one of a few things that I didn't make).
  • Due date: 3/1

Appointments/questions: Had my 3 hour glucose today. Feel exhausted and gross. Then I have my regular appointment tomorrow morning. I’m both hoping they say I need at ultrasound (cause let’s be real I want one) and also hoping they don’t because it’s so expensive

Rants/raves: We had a great holiday. My 4yo lost his mind leading up to Christmas, but now seems to be calming down. I just feel like a terrible mom because we are having a movie day today. I’m too tired to function and DH is having some diabetes struggles so the grown ups are needing a day of rest.

How are you feeling: Exhausted. I still cant keep down food after 4pm or I’m up all night sick, which is frustrating over the holidays.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? We have an ikea print of boathouse row on the Schuykill river that I love. My husband nicknames it a Grandma picture but I love Philly lol
  • Due date: 3/3

Appointments/questions: Appointment on Friday. Anxious about what my bp reading will be, I’ve been struggling.

Rants/raves: Christmas was ok. I partly blame myself for it not being great. I can’t do a whole lot or I get headaches or contractions. So I was personally bummed. But we did finish DD1’s new room this past weekend and now I have time to put the nursery together!

How are you feeling: Huge, frequent headaches, Braxton Hicks, tired and up about every two hours at night to go to the bathroom. I am also walking/waddling sooo slowly these days. I’ve had a couple doozy of contractions recently as well. OB said no more than 3 an hour or to call because I was having them multiple times a day. It was two last night but they were more than the usual tightening so I was slightly concerned but haven’t had any since.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? I would say our collection of pictures on our walls. DH and I have taken all of the pics that hang in our house and I love that they are pictures you can’t just find at a store.

  • Due date: March 5 / March 11

Appointments/questions: 1hr GD screen and regular appointment 12/31

Rants/raves: Rant: I got the worst cold over the holiday and we had to leave my MIL’s house before Xmas because I was feeling so terrible. I feel like I ruined Christmas, even though everyone said they understood. Rave: I am finally starting to get over it, and even though I felt awful, it was kind of nice to have a Christmas day of movies and napping at home with my own little family.

How are you feeling: Completely exhausted. Between the awful third trimester heartburn and this cold I have barely been sleeping. Desperately hoping for a few hours of consecutive sleep tonight to recharge my batteries.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? A giant painting of oysters by a very talented former roommate, and this huge claw-foot oak dining table from my MIL.
  • @mayoduck My OB is scheduling me for a growth scan between 32-34 weeks because baby measured small at my anatomy scan. She said it’s likely nothing to worry about but wants to check in on baby again to see if she’s catching up, staying on her current curve/trajectory or dropping lower on the curve.
I didn’t have a growth scan with my first DD, as she always measured right on track. She certainly wasn’t small, as she weighed 8lbs 8oz!
I think that, given my first baby was a good size, and this baby is measuring below the 20th percentile, my OB just wants to see what’s going on in there. I don’t mind as I can’t wait to see baby again, would like some reassurance regarding her size, and am curious about her positioning!
  • @mayoduck My LO has been in the 99th percentile throughout my pregnancy, my fundal height has me 4 weeks ahead, and I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes so my doctor is doing extra screenings at every appointment just to make sure we are prepared for everything we can be. I love getting to see him and it helps give me peace of mind that he is ok so I’m all about the extra screenings!
  • Due date: March 1

    Appointments: Tomorrow

Rants/raves: Rant: Sorry in advance, but I have more than one. We got a letter from our town last week stating that the town water did not meet state limits due to TTHM average levels being too high over the course of the year. They said not to worry unless pregnant or have a young child. I have a 19 month old and I’m pregnant. My biggest issue with all of this is that the town waited until the last minute to alert people, for political reasons that are too extensive to type out. I also learned that they are only required to report publicly once per year but they test the water quarterly. They only have to report on yearly average. I learned that the levels were extremely high this summer after doing my own research yet the town didn’t bother to tell anyone. My midwife has advised me to schedule 3 ultrasounds (32, 36, 40) to make sure fetal development is normal. I’m just so angry that this is happening.

We also will be investing multiple thousands into a reverse osmosis water system since it seems that the water here has never been great. And, on an unrelated note, I have a huge cold sore after getting back to back colds.

    How are you feeling: Exhausted.

GTKY: What is your favorite piece of home decor you have and why? My favorite is my wall of wedding photos. Photography is an investment I will never regret.

  • @chocolatelemons Wow, that is so infuriating and irresponsible of your town! Definitely not stress anyone needs on top of being pregnant.

I hope everyone with the extra scans gets positive news! I feel like mine is unnecessary and wouldn't even be happening if my placenta weren't lower than they liked at the 20-week scan, causing a chain reaction of scans and I feel like having to get more scans is causing me additional stress but hopefully for others, it's giving you peace of mind!
  • @chocolatelemons I’m sorry, that’s terrible! If it helps at all I had a similar situation while I was pregnant with my first. Somewhere around 25 weeks we got a flyer in the mail telling us that our water had unacceptable lead levels for pregnant women and children. I was beside myself. Obviously we switched to bottled water, and I am happy to report that my daughter is now 3 and super smart and healthy. I hope it will turn out the same for you.
  • @chocolatelemons I have nothing else to add other than I’m sorry you are dealing with that and that it is very frustrating! Definitely not something anyone want to deal with in pregnancy.
  • @chocolatelemons That's very frustrating but not surprising they didn't tell anyone. We have the whole PFAS thing going on in our region. Luckily it is not within our city limits but you never know. DD1 had higher than normal lead levels when she was checked as an infant, we never figured out why or what the source was, but she is almost 5 and is fine. Hopefully all your scans are normal and baby has no issues.

  • @chocolatelemons I agree with what's been said that the situation sounds super frustrating and irresponsible of the town ti wait!!

As for the cold sore, they are so uncomfortable!! In Chinese medicine you can use watermelon to help heal them (if you can find any watermelon right now!!) eat a couple slices and then use the white/rind as a cool compress! I would be willing to guess that cantaloupe would work, too, if you can't find a watermelon now.
  • @chocolatelemons I'm so sorry to hear that! I'd be so mad!

Due Date: March 2 but I was informed that they don't want me going past 39 weeks (chronic hypertension).

Appointments: I have a regular prenatal appointment on Jan. 4th. I start once a week appointments after that.

Rant/Raves: I have really enjoyed spending time with family for Christmas, however, I am looking forward to some alone time. We have literally been with family for 6 days now!

Feeling? All of this Christmas food has me SOOO swollen. I feel like I look 15lbs. heavier! I am also pretty emotional, have Braxton Hicks, and the swamp crotch is REAL!

GTKY: I love all of the wall decor in our house. I have a rustic feel and I love it!

Thank you for all the supportive words. Fortunately, she has been measuring exactly
how she should be at my prenatals, so hopefully I’m worrying over nothing. Regardless, I’m glad my midwife is taking the extra precaution of scheduling additional scans.

@purplepirate09 I hear you on the family time. It’s so nice to see everyone, but it’s also relaxing to spend some alone time.

@abbykwail Thank you and I will definitely try the watermelon! I get a cold sore in the same spot pretty much every time I get sick.
  • Had my appointment this afternoon and she said my blood pressure it still "trending upward". At this point it is not high enough to really do anything but monitor symptoms. Trying to lay low and hope I can keep it steady, but we are preparing for a repeat of last time.

  • @novelblessings I’m sorry to hear that. I hope it stays in range and you can keep that baby cooking as long as possible!
  • @maggiemadeit Thanks! I’m optimistic we will make it close to full term. Somewhere around 38/39 weeks. DD1 was preemie size at 39 weeks but had no issues or NICU stay. I’m hopeful for a similar outcome.

    Due date: 3/1

Appts/questions: two appts  this week, fri is normal 2 week appt Thursday is growth scan. That leads to my question,  I am on #5, never had more than 3 scans- dating, nuchal (sp) and anatomy.  This pregnancy  I had several at the beginning because of their mistake then 2 normal ones and have since had another which they said was because they couldn't see profile  but they didn't even get profile shot only measured baby( was at like 35 percental I think) and am currently scheduled for another this Thursday.  Idk why,  they haven't said anything about problems,  high risk etc. I am 32 no health problems other than kidney stones that they plan to remove sometime after delivery.  Any  Similar experience?

Rant/rave rave: Christmas was great, easy going  kids had fun we didn't go as over budget as normal and they were still happy and there was no fighting and we even passed out goodies to the neighbors.
Rant: boss informed me I need to open my availability, while I understand this, the fact that there are teenage  workers with no availability is ticking me off.  I reduced my hours due to constant pain from stones and my internship/hours/family etc . And they followed suit and reduced theirs 🙄 anyway...

How are you feeling: tired and lots of pressure in pelvis and back, grumpy and tired some more

GTKY Favorite home decor: the shells my family and I have collected from trips and the hall way with their artwork hung along the length

  • @novelblessings That’s disappointing that your BP is increasing. Hopefully, it will steady out. Have you had any other symptoms besides the higher readings?
  • @chocolatelemons thanks. I just started to get headaches recently and have been out of breathe easily for a while now, along with random racing heart. I also gained a significant amount of weight in the past month. With my last pregnancy I had the same symptoms without the protein in my urine, except I had gained significantly more weight by this point.
Last time they just kept blowing me off despite my rising blood pressure and it ended up getting up over 160/90 before they took it seriously. They seem to be on it this time and taking it more seriously. But between feeling awful and providers not taking my symptoms seriously last time it still makes me nervous.

  • @novelblessings I can understand feeling nervous! I had HBP last time too and although I had no symptoms of it I was thankful they were taking all the precautions to keep me and LO as healthy as possible. I’m sorry you are dealing with it again. I hated that I felt like I had no control over it other than trying to watch my sodium. Hopefully yours will steady itself out.
  • @ashley14598 thanks! It is a frustrating thing to do deal with. I was doing so well with eating healthy and exercising this time, I was really hoping we would avoid it but you can’t really prevent it. I can’t do much but lie around right now so I’m super bummed I can’t be more active. At least we are nearing the end.

  • @novelblessings Ugh, sorry you are dealing with that. I’m glad your practitioner is taking you more seriously this time. Keep advocating for yourself!
  • Had an appointment today and my giant baby bump is measuring a full 4 weeks ahead. I knew I was growing another big baby, but damn!
  • @maggiemadeit Wow, 4 weeks ahead?! That’s crazy! I measured two weeks ahead with DD and she ended up being 8lbs 8oz with a giant head. How big was your first? Would they push to induce you early due to measuring so far ahead?
  • @laur84ns My first was 10.5 pounds, but I had no idea she was that big ahead of time. I didn’t have GD, wasn’t measuring ahead, and we only had the one ultrasound at 20 weeks, so it was a total surprise. She ended up being a c-section baby after an induction at 41 weeks and several days of labor.

My midwife wasn’t worried about measuring that far ahead, and said it was kind of expected given how big my first was. I am trying to VBAC this time, so my preference is not to be induced. But I have to meet with an OB at the practice in a few weeks to discuss the risks of VBAC vs RCS, and I have a feeling they will take a look at the size of this baby and try to push me to RCS or an early induction. I will hear them out, but I don’t think there is good evidence for interventions like that based on predicted size. So we shall see...
  • @maggiemadeit Makes sense! Good luck at the appointment with the OB - here’s hoping he/she doesn’t try to push you into something you don’t want. You’re so right about the measurements and how they can be off - my sister had GD and was pushed into a RCS because baby was estimated to be large....he was 7lbs 2oz, so
definitely not large. She was a bit disappointed she didn’t push for a VBAC.
