Re: Product Spotlight: Diapers and Wipes

• Disposable Diapers: We buy Luvs at Target because it’s the most economical brick and mortar store in the area, and because the Target brand (up & up) seems to leak more. I like the Huggies stripe that changes color when wet, but it’s not really necessary once you can look at or feel the diaper and tell the difference. I’m pretty sure I should get the Cartwheel card at Target and that it would give me a discount.

Disposable Wipes: I got a bunch of samples of Huggies travel packs - rubberized, refillable packages of wipes. I love the reusable aspect, but I prefer having Seventh Generation wipes - which are the right balance: thin but not flimsy, sturdy enough to wipe poop but not so thick you can’t feel what you’re doing, damp enough to clean but not sopping. And they don’t dry out too quickly. Walmart brand is too thick and wet. Target has 4-packs of Seventh Gen wipes, which cuts the cost a bit.

Cloth Diapers: we loooove Green Mountain Diapers workhorses (snapped) - easy for DH to understand since it looks like a disposable and doesn’t require Snappis or Boingos to secure, easy to pull out of the dryer and put away since there aren’t any pockets to stuff. I want to switch back for DD now that we’ve got better access to laundry again, and I want more fleece and wool (Disana brand) pants to keep the diapers from soaking through. We don’t love Gerber all in ones - very leaky. I also love Fluff Love University for learning, and Fluff Love BST and GMD Mama BST groups on Facebook for purchasing used.

Cloth wipes: flannel is good enough for us. Easy to make 6”x6” squares, easier to buy at like ~$0.65/each. Impossible to destroy.

Because we will all need them.

Disposable Diapers: We used Honest for the first year or so because I was lazy but then I discovered something I want to share with you all. AMAZON WAREHOUSE DEALS. Whatever brand you end up using (we ended up settling on Seventh Generation for daytime and Pampers baby dry over night. I liked Seventh Generation because the weird diaper smell from a lot of diapers bugged me) search for them in Amazon Warehouse deals and you can get them hella cheap. The box might be damaged or returned but 1) The diapers are still in plastic bags and 2) your kid is going to pee and poop in them soooo save some money. Plus they're usually still prime so they're cheap!

Disposable Wipes: My favorite brand are the Amazon Elements Unscented (the blue pack). Plus - Subscribe and Save - you're going to be using them so if you get a bit backed up and have extra have no fear. Pampers were also OK. Honests are really nice but too pricy. I did NOT like Huggies or BJs brand.

Cloth Diapers: We're CDing this time so I'll follow for that - I've mostly purchased second hand Bum Genius pockets. Also maybe we can do another CD thread for us beginners sometime??

Cloth wipes: I love my disposable wipes too much to go this far I think.

• We only used disposable.

I liked Huggies best. Tried Pampers cause it’s what the hospital sent us home with but they have this mesh in the bottom that I always felt turned poop into a bigger mess. We used some Luvs our neighbor gave us when they potty trained their last kid and they were okay but kinda thin imo. I never tried Honest or Seventh Generation, they always seemed much more expensive. Amazon has actually come out with their own brand called Mama Bear that I’m eager to try.

Wipes: Amazon Elements!!! The perfect balance of moistness/thickness/strength. I think we used the sensitive ones. Also unlike Pampers, the sensitive from Amazon weren’t more expensive for the same amount or you got less for the same amount of money. That always bugged me when I went to the store. There was always like 50+less in the sensitive box but it was the same price or more expensive then they other versions.

Also yes yes to open box deals on Amazon and subscribe and save. I have gotten some really awesome open box deals. The subscribe and save show up automatically, you get a discount, and you can easily change when you need to size up. Win win. I loved it.
this is my backup acct.

• Disposable Diapers: We used Pampers Swaddlers. DS1 tried Huggies but had too many blowouts or woke up with wet jammies the next morning. Also tried store brand with DS1 and got a rash. For DS2 we used Pampers Swaddlers again but were able to use store brand. My niece used Honest diapers and never had a problem. So really not much help here in terms of what to get. Every kid can be different. I wish we had just started with CD though considering we would have spent so much less on diapers by this point.

Also another suggestion would be for any poopy diapers to just throw them in the trash outside. We initially used the disposable pail but the house would stink. I don’t think it matters how great a pail you get, it will inevitably stink up the house.

Disposable wipes: Pampers Sensitive. Again DS1 broke out with Huggies so we’ve just avoided them. We also use Target brand and they’ve been great.

• We only use disposable so that's what I can speak too.

Disposable Diapers: For sizes N-2 we use Pampers Swaddlers. We tried Huggies and she peed out of them. We will start out with Pampers this time and see what works for him. Once we hit size 3, we switch to Target brand during the day but stay with Pampers Overnights for bedtime. We found we didn't have to change her overnight once we made that switch. Cheapest will be the off brand (like Target) but I highly recommend either Amazon or Target. I combine the debit redcard, cartwheel deals and manufacturer coupons and you can usually get good deals, I will also wait until it's a deal like spend $100 and get a $25 gift card, save the gift cards and eventually use them on one of those deals and I don't have to spend any money out of our pocket.

Disposable Wipes: what brand do you use and why? I actually prefer thin wipes as I feel like it cleans out the crevices better. We stick with the unscented Target brand (I think it's the blue box). You're wiping your kids' dirty, stinky butt with them. I wouldn't spend much money. You can usually include wipes with the Target deals.
• @MRDCle I second a cloth diaper thread! I have so many questions about them!
We purchased some used Bum Genius and received a bunch of hand me downs from my sister. I will be getting them stripped soon. I love that I spend like $50 total on diapers!
• @MRDCle- How do I find wearhouse deals on diapers? I just searched Wearhouse deals diapers and nothing came up :/
• @bankssl1 I would google Amazon Warehouse deals and click the link. Then the top searchbar would say "Amazon Warehouse" and I would type in "Seventh Generation size 4" or whatever I was looking for!

• @MRDCle - figured it out! thank you!!
• Disposable Diapers: We used Pamper Swaddlers for the newborn stage since that is what was provided at the hospital. I particularly liked the pee indicator, belly button cutout features. After that we switched to Seventh Gen diapers. I like that they didn't have any additives and they were pretty effective (no leaks and fit both my kiddos pretty well). Target had the best price at the time.

Disposable Wipes: Costco's Kirkland wipes, hands down. Cheap and effective.

Cloth Diapers: We used generic pocket diapers with bamboo inserts. They were pretty simple to wash since the inserts came out on their own in the washing machine. And being able to separate the waterproof shell (line dry) from the absorbent insert (tumble dry) cut down on drying time. We also invested in disposable/flushable liners after LO started solids to make poop clean up even easier.

Cloth wipes: purchase or make your own? Never used cloth wipes.

• Disposable Diapers & Wipes: We tried everything, but Aldi was cheaper than anything other than the Costco brand on sale. I thought they were comparable in quality, too. Some friends have said they leak, but we have a little string bean and it hasn't been an issue for us.
• Disposable Diapers:
We use target brand. Work great and don't irritate my boy's sensitive skin.

Disposable wipes:
Costco store brand fragrance free.

Cloth diapers:
Generic pocket diapers with bamboo inserts. We used these for a year then stopped because no matter what we tried they stunk! We seriously tried everything short of buying a top loading washer.

Cloth wipes:
We used cloth wipes for a while and found them to be a total pain, both using them and laundry/putting them away.

Our plan this time around is to use disposable diapers and wipes.
• Disposable Diapers: What brand do you use and why? Honest- I love the cute design and that they are chemical free for babies sensitive skin. Whenever we deviate we get rashes.

Disposable Wipes: happy with pampers sensitive they get a decent rating from EWG and haven’t had any sensitivities...

Cloth etc I can’t comment on as I have no experience.... I just can’t do more laundry!

• Disposable Diapers: I usually get the cheap parents house at Walmart or up and up brand. We don’t use that many.

Disposable Wipes: my favorite were the ones the hospital gave us. Haven’t found any like them. Might try Costco next.

Cloth Diapers: we have a big stash from dd. Blend of styles. I really like the flip hybrid which are a cover as they are reusable of baby didn’t over pee if you replace the liner. Helps for cloth out and about. We also do all in one and pocket because they were cheap and at night we do a fitted with a cover because it absorbs way more. They stink though so I need to deep clean everything before baby comes. I chose cloth because our water/electricity ate included in our rent and therefore it didn’t add to any costs to wash (outside of detergent.) so with kid one we spent probably close to $700 on the diapers but with kid 2 we will probably spend maybe $100 to get a few boy diapers to replace the extra girly ones and a few just because the others wear out over time. I tend to buy used or gently used because it’s sooo much cheaper than new.

Cloth wipes: we make them. I also sew diaper liners. We have a bug so I don’t think we need more for this baby.

Hubs likes the savings in cloth diapering. I like that and that I’m not contributing as much to landfill. I also use mama cloth (cloth pads) and need to get some post partum ones sorted out. I tend to get terrible infected hairs or pimples when I use disposable for very long so I will probably only use the ones the hospital gives me and then switch to cloth because it is so much more comfortable.

With cloth the biggest thing for hubs was having the diapers fully prepped for wearing. Because he struggled to decide what went with what and we get leaks if he builds the diaper. But that’s fine by me and helps keep the diapering area neater. He was super willing to change diapers once I started pre-stuffing them.
• @kbirchtree, I've been interested in switching to cloth pads for myself since (especially with pregnancy here) I've been using disposable liners daily due to leakage. I'm just hesitant to add that much bulk to my underwear since I work in a gym and generally wear tight yoga pants/shorts. Any suggestions or recommendations? I've also thought about the period underwear, but not sure I want to invest in those, hah. I could probably make my own liners if I got a better sewing machine....

I used Pampers Swaddlers with both babies. I had too many blowouts with Huggies and Luvs leaked a lot. I tried a generic store brand once and DD had a horrible reaction to it
My sister loved the Sams Club brand with her son.

Disposable Wipes: what brand do you use and why? What don’t you like and why? How do you save $$?
Pampers sensitive just because of my kids sensitive skin. I never liked Huggies wipes and generic brands seemed to dry out fast.

Auto ship on amazon prime is the way to go for the best price on wipes. Open box or auto ship on prime for diapers. Sometimes Target has deals if you buy more than one box of diapers then you get anywhere from $20-$50 gift card

Give us the pros and cons of what you have, or ask about what you want.

The liners aren’t that bulky. They do light period days too. You. Can get China cheapies online that are sufficent. They snap on. I wear leggings and haven’t noticed anything annoying with bulk. (I’m also a bit more round in stature) I find them so much more comfortable and forget I am using one most of the time. They are not hard to make. I’d find a momma cloth support group on Facebook and get knowledge from there for making them. I make heavy pads and medium. Not sure my machine will handle ppd pads so I may buy a set of those.
• Disposables for us. We learned that Sam’s Club brand and pampers give DD a rash. So we use target brand and love them.

We use huggies natural care, and switched to the tougher one and done kind later.
• Diapers: only used disposable. Tried huggies (didn't fit well) and luvs (no indicator strip). Ended up with Pampers swaddlers during the day and pampers overnights at night. but Pampers made changes recently so we will start with them again and try others if they fail.

We buy from target when u get the gift card for 2+ boxes, plus cartwheel coupons.

Wipes: huggies! We buy cases of them from kroger's during dollar days.

• We only used disposable. We started out with pampers sensitive diapers and wipes but now we use amazon's brand mama bear and the amazon elements wipes. Nothing wrong with pampers but the amazon brand are cheaper and work just as well IMO. For overnight we use huggies overnights - these are an absolute must with my son and have been since about 6 months (when he started STTN consistently). In the beginning I really liked the wetness indicator but now that we change him less often it's not that necessary and when his diaper is wet it's so heavy that it's really obvious.

• Update: Luvs was out so I got the Target brand (size 4). Wetness indicator is not very reliable; I don’t love the Velcro tabs (no contrasting color makes it minimally harder to set up a change, they don’t pull off cleanly so when DD is testing whether she’ll be allowed to run around commando the diaper frays); slightly more likely to leave gel drops when diaper is over full from overnight (ie from the liner layer not completely containing the urine-absorbing chemical). DD has a bit of a rash/possibly eczema/possibly just winter humidity levels that may or may not be attributable to these diapers. Verdict: $3 savings/box makes these a viable alternative but not preferred over Luvs.

With my previous babies I have exclusively used Pampers swaddlers and cruisers for diapers and Huggies one and done for wipes. Target is usually the cheapest place to get diapers between gift card deals, coupons, and cartwheel. Kroger during their buy 5 save 5 sales is usually the cheapest place for wipes.
