morning all! I've been away for the last few weeks with travel and work craziness, but hope everyone is feeling good and enjoying the second trimester "glow" (I use quotes intentionally...)
Due date/W+D: May 19, 17w2d
Baby is the size of a(n): pomegranate. The Bump also tells me baby's foot is the size of a gummy bear.
Any appointments? Questions?: Not this week. I have been having every-other-week ultrasounds due to a higher risk of cervical issues from a procedure I had to remove high risk cells a few years ago. It wasn't an issue with my first pregnancy and knock wood, hasn't been this time around. But I do appreciate the extra monitoring.
Rants/Raves?: Feeling pretty good. I just told my work last week..I work from home but will be visiting the office next week, and I'm starting to show. So I had to do it. I was so nervous but my team's been really supportive. I work for two women who don't have kids, and always feel a little like the odd one out because they stay late, come in early, etc and I just can't do that right now. They never make me feel bad but it's my own insecurity.
How are you feeling?: Fine. Some RLP and random shooting pains but nothing crazy. Nice to have some of my energy back after feeling like a slug during first tri.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I really love fall, but I actually like all of the seasons in moderation. Winter feels like it started early here (I live outside DC) and with the pregnancy, I might be over winter really soon. But I don't think I could live somewhere without seasons.
@bpietronicco. I'm not feeling my baby yet either. I'm so ready to have that reassurance.
Due date/W+D: 5/16 17+5
Baby is the size of a(n): I think yesterday the app said as tall as a Hershey bar.
Any appointments? Questions?: Not until next week. I'm assuming he will order my anatomy scan at that appointment. I'm really hoping I can get in for that before Christmas.
Rants/Raves?: I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with all the projects on our list to take care of before May. It seems like each project depends on the one before it being completed, and it's all stuff DH has to do, so I just have to wait. And he is about to hit a busy season at work, so between work and projects I feel like I will never see him.
How are you feeling: Pretty good, but I could really use an energy spike, and my glow has not arrived.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I'm a big fan of early fall and late spring. I'm over winter already and technically it hasn't even started.
@bpietronicco@fatmonica I swear I was feeling baby around 15-15 1/2 weeks. Then nothing since then and I had an appointment last monday at 16 1/2 weeks and baby was fine (I'd been kind of nervous).
@bluesky24 I've told my boss and her boss, but with my SCH, feel kind of weird talking about it and got upset when explaining it to my boss's boss. I work from home but go in once every couple weeks on average, more sometimes and less others. I think I didn't go in for almost a month earlier this pregnancy. I decided I'm just going to wear maternity clothes, have seen boss's boss twice since "the incident" and she side-eyed my obvious bump since she told me I could wait longer to tell people if that makes me comfortable. I feel like I just want people to notice without me having to say anything, so that's my plan. I'll see everyone for our all hands and team potluck (50 person team) on Thursday.
Due date/W+D: May 17, 17+4
Baby is the size of a(n): Hershey bar (that seems bigger than a pomegranate which is this week's fruit)
Any appointments? Questions?: A/S at 18 weeks on Friday! I had it at 20 weeks last time but hoping to get off of modified bed rest if the SCH hasn't grown before our flight to visit family for the holidays next week.
Rants/Raves?: I hate flying, especially with a toddler, but I'm excited to go see our families next week. Honestly, much more excited about seeing mine than DH's Our parents live 4 miles apart but my mom works so we get more "us" time and I can cook and eat what I want at my mom's house. Both of our mom's keep the fridge like Jenga but I'm not comfortable at the IL's house or buying groceries for our family to store there. We've been together forever but MIL never let me stay there when I would visit while we were long distance and home for holidays or when we would both come home once DH moved here so we'd stay at my mom's house. Now that we're married, it's expected to be 50/50 but for 10 years she never made me feel welcome there so it WON'T be 50/50 and she gets so upset about it. She's also SO BAD at having other people around. She leaves the TV blasting way too loud b/c she can't hear but then will go putz around the house not watching it while DH or I are trying to work or play with DD. I'm like, if we want to do activities with your parents, that's fine by me, but I'm not going to sit there for 5 out of 10 days just to appease your mother when I could be relaxing or enjoying myself in an empty house down the road where I feel comfortable and welcome. Plus my little sister is home from grad school and will hang out but also keeps to herself sometimes and is super easy going. We'll do Christmas Eve and morning with DH's family while his brother and SIL are up which will be great, but otherwise, it'll be a couple days with them and more free time at my mom's and MIL is going to flip out again. I've also told DH he can take DD over there and I don't have to go all the time. We still BF but she can have whole milk and be totally fine (like she does at daycare). This will probably take some of the pressure off, for this year at least.
How are you feeling?: Good!
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I love summer and fall. I live in the land of no seasons (rainy season for a month or two and not-rainy otherwise) but grew up in New England and can't wait to move back somewhere with seasons in the next 1-2 years.
Baby is the size of a(n): Chipmunk (which seems smaller than a pomegrante?)
Any appointments? Questions?: I had an elective ultrasound yesterday to find out the gender - hooray! My next appointment isn't until early January.
Rants/Raves?: Finding out the gender was super exciting!
How are you feeling?: Overall feeling pretty good. Still a little tired. @fatmonica I'm still waiting on that glow too...all I've gotten are zits...
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I love fall and spring. I live in a place with super hot weather from basically May - October, so I love more temperate climate of fall/spring. I love travelling during those seasons too! Last year we went to Vermont in the fall to see the changing leaves, this year we went to Japan in Spring and saw the blooming cherry blossoms!
Baby is the size of a(n): Weight of a hockey puck, I believe the app said.
Any appointments? Questions?: Nothing until the end of the month.
Rants/Raves?: I’ve been so hungry this week! I need to reign it in...
How are you feeling?: Pretty good. Have got some of my energy back which is good. I wouldn’t say I’m glowing though, haha.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? Haha, @ldt_48 it’s funny you say that. I grew up in Vermont and I have this nostalgic idealized image of fall from my childhood that I love. And now I live in Japan and cherry blossom season is amazing! (Glad you got to see it, it can be tricky to get the timing right.) So, yeah, it’s fall/spring for me, too!
Any appointments? Questions?: I just had my 17 week MFM appointment on Monday. Baby boy is looking great! He's measuring a little big (Thanks, diabetes) but he looks healthy. I just have to get a tighter grip on my blood sugars, so they upped my insulin dosages. But other then that, it was a good appointment!
Rants/Raves?: Nope!
How are you feeling?: Mostly just tired. I cannot sleep well at night because I keep waking up with leg cramps or because I have to pee. It's sooooo annoying.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? Fall for sure! I am a mid-range temperature gal. I HATE summer heat and I don't love winter cold. The only reason fall wins over spring is because there is less mud. lol
@dfirstimer is your doctor worried about your weight gain? I've found that depending on what I'm wearing, how full my bladder is, and time of day, I can get a 2-3lb swing or more. I usually weigh myself every few days, sometimes multiple times a day, to get an idea of what influences it so I don't freak out. Last pregnancy my OB was worried I'd gained 5lbs in 4 weeks when I hadn't gained anything yet but I had a full bladder a bulky sweater, and shoes instead of flip flops on so had only gained 2-3lbs really. Also, some women have to eat to keep the naseau at bay so gain more in the first trimester than those who've barely been able to eat. Plus, if you gain about 4lbs a month for the next 5 months, that only puts your total at 30lbs!
@keighty80 Yay for a good MFM appointment! How big is he measuring? DD always measured big but "within range." She was lined up exactly at our 8w3d appointment, then measured big by 2-3 days at our 12 week ultrasound and by 6 days at our 20 week ultrasound. Yea, she was an 8lb baby when born the day before her due date but that was still pretty normal. My OB actually felt my stomach at my appointment 2 days before she was born and said she thought the baby was almost 8lbs!! This time she said at my first visit we'll keep an eye on this baby's size to potentially induce me if I go over if this baby is bigger so we don't have a c-section due to a 9lb+ baby. Normally I'd balk at that but she was so on the money with DD, I trust her.
@kvh22 thanks for the advice. No, my dr last time when I told him I was concerned of gaining 8 pounds in 1 month told me I am ok and that he thought I was underweight to begin with and that things don’t move the same every month. I am just worried of weight creeping up too fast and putting myself and baby in a risky place especially given I am over 40 and this is my first pregnancy. Just seem to be very hungry all the time.
@ldt_48 Due date buddies! Thanks, I love it, too! Not to say it doesn’t have its problems like any other country, but overall the lifestyle here really suits me. Whereabouts did you and your husband visit?

I was there for work. I took an interim role with my company in Tokyo. I had been there before for work for 7-10 days at a time but spending 6 months there was fantastic and gave me more time to explore a lot more. I just wished I spoke the language.....I had enough basics to get me through but so wished I had learned more before going. Have you been in Japan for long? What took you there?
@dfirstimer Living in a place is so different then just visiting. It’s great that you got to stay for awhile! And the language is a challenge, so putting in the effort to know the basics is awesome. I’ve been here 12 years and still struggle with it sometimes! I originally came over teaching English and somehow just...stayed, haha.

That is amazing. I love Japan and I would have loved to stay. The people, culture and place all so wonderful. My husband wasn’t that keen so I had to decline the permanent offer but it was a wondeful experience. Twelve years!! That is awesome! Such a wonderful country. I loved the safety and how amazing it is that kids so young get to go to school by themselves, taking public transport on their own.
Any appointments? Questions?:NT appt on 26th - dying to see my little girl, feels like it's been forever! Kinda worried about my fluid levels as I don't think I'm drinking enough water as I should.
Rants/Raves?: Worried about not eating/drinking enough. Gained 5 pounds thus far (but alot of inches in my thighs, ugh). The holidays are throwing me off big time.
How are you feeling?: Feeling better, but still get tired easily.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I've always loved summer, cause SoCal summers are nice!
@kipper-2 We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Minakami. I totally agree that living somewhere is SO different than visiting. I lived abroad in Chile for a couple years (teaching ESL too!) and I always felt that people visiting could not possibly get the full experience. Japan was my husband's first international trip as an adult so I was just thrilled that he loved it so much. I love traveling abroad so I'm just happy that he's opened his eyes a bit and is more willing to go abroad...although he seriously just asks if we can go to Japan every year haha.
@dfirstimer Yes, public safety and also the transportation system are definitely major advantages to living here. Too bad you couldn’t stay! But I can understand your husband, too. It’s definitely not for everyone, even if the sushi is amazing.
@ldt_48 Wow, Chile sounds great, too! Was it hard for you to move back to the States? Teaching ESL really is a such a good way to get to live in a foreign country for a couple years. But traveling abroad is pretty good, too. Glad your husband enjoyed it so much!

Any appointments? Questions?: next appt is January 2- waiting for call to schedule my level 2 ultrasound/anatomy scan.
Rants/Raves?: glad I am not having many symptoms but wish I wasn’t in this limbo of not being able to feel baby yet.
How are you feeling?: feeling okay- tired mostly. Overall anxious but trying to stay calm and take this pregnancy day by day.
GTKY: what is your favorite season and why (winter, spring, summer, fall/autumn)? I love early fall- just love changing leaves.
@bpietronicco. I'm not feeling my baby yet either. I'm so ready to have that reassurance.

@kipper-2 lucky you! I moved back from Tokyo in February. Lived there for 6 months. I love Japan and can’t wait to go back.
