Progesterone Suppositories

When I met with my OB during a check up he told me that the minute I get a bfp again to call him and he's going to start me on progesterone along with baby aspirin and  collect quantitative HCG test.  Well fast forward several months...HCG levels rising, I am 600mg of progesterone before bed... is anyone else doing this? I know the reasoning behind it, I'm just wanting to hear how others are doing... we have an ultrasound scheduled tomorrow fingers crossed it goes well.

I have had multiple miscarriages.  My progesterone doesn't appear to be an issue. I have a 5yo, who was born premature.  This is as a preventative measure. I am happy that he is being proactive especially after all the things I went through in prior pregnancies. We have a long drawn out plan if this one sticks.

Re: Progesterone Suppositories

  • @jquellin did they run a progesterone test? I am taking 100mg suppositories nightly but my 7dpo progesterone test from this cycle was a very low end of normal. It is possible to have too much progesterone though so without testing I cannot imagine why they would give you such a high dose.
  • I’d make sure your levels are approproiate for supplementation.  Normally, you can’t have too much, but it’s definitely possible if you have no deficiency to begin with.  Also—600 is a lot to me, but I’m not a doctor.

im on it until 8 weeks, but I also have a luteal phase defect.

  • I am taking 600mg a day and started before we became pregnant. My levels were low in a blood test and are good in subsequent tests.
  • I'm on 200 mg 2x day, also as a preventative because of recurrent miscarriages.  My doctor had me start them 3 days after a +OPK so I've been on them for a few weeks now. My doctor doesn't test progesterone levels because the suppositories don't affect your progesterone blood levels so it wouldn't tell us much, and if my levels were low the solution would be suppositories, which we're already doing.

I hope your ultrasound tomorrow goes well!

  • I too am on suppositories 200mg a day before bed.
  • Can I just say.. I really hate taking these. The melty leaking is super irritating to my skin and disruptive to my sleep :( I just purchased reusable cotton pads so that I didn't have disposable pads rubbing up against my skin and it's only slightly better.
  • I don't mind the night suppository, it seems to mostly get absorbed but I hate the morning one.  I lay back down for at least 30 minutes after putting it in but I still feel like the majority of it leaks out.  I always feel so gross.

  • From my understanding, there's little evidence that progesterone supplementation prevents miscarriage. But the side effects are usually minor and it isn't very expensive, so it's still prescribed.
  • Everything is going great we got to see a little heart beat and measuring right on track!

We didn’t get a progesterone test this time around the prior ones were slightly low...see @coco2787 initial response.

While there aren’t huge studies on progesterone during early pregnancy to prevent miscarriages there aren’t very many studies to disprove it.  Miscarriages are still very much not understood. Anything that can possibly help is okay in my book.
  • I had not heard of having too much, but it’s interesting that you all have different dosages. I am on 200mg 2x/daily.  It’s definitely a nuisance/messy, but it can supposedly help maintain a healthy lining and placenta.  My levels were not tested as being low, so this is just to help in case I need it, as far as I know.
  • @jquellin I'm right there with you as far as doing anything I can to possibly help.  I'm so glad your u/s went well and you got to see the HB!

  • I am starting the suppositories today... 200mg twice a day. Like above posters said...anything that might help is worth it in my books:) We also saw a heartbeat and a little bean measuring right on track today at 7+0. If this helps bean to stay put I'm all in!
  • I too do the 200mg twice a day. The night ones do not bother me, its the waking up an hour early before work to do the morning ones that got me tired lol.  My fertility dr. also has me on Estrace and baby asprin.  I am 8 weeks 2 days and go back on Thursday for another ultra sound.  My levels have been rising so they only draw blood work once a week now instead of twice a week.

  • I had my labs done yesterday and my progesterone is in the 30s! I’m so relieved and feeling a little better about whatever small kick the suppositories are giving to my ute and my blood levels.
  • Starting mine today! I did them last pregnancy and I’m dreading the wet feeling all day! Plus side I get to see baby every 2 weeks until 12 weeks!
  • the messiness of it is the worst!
  • Doctor gave me an option to take it orally or insert in my vag 😂 Definitely took the easier route. But the side effects are killing me. 😭
  • @camilleanneh as gross as you feel doing it vaginally there are very few side effects that way (at least for me)

  • @camilleanneh I agree w/ @coco2787 Taking the suppository is a annoying, but if you take them at night and use a pad then you get direct absorption to where the progesterone needs to go and little to no side effects. The only real downside for me is that it melts, similar to monestat suppositories, and that can feel pretty wet.

I agree - no side effects for me, other than the obvious messy and uncomfortable side of it.  I heard taking it orally has horrible side effects.
  • Am I the only one on a topical cream?
  • How long do y'all stay on the suppositories? I went through IVF so do progesterone shots until 10 weeks. Wondering if it's the same...

  • I think my midwife said 13 weeks
  • I'm on the suppositories until 12-13 weeks. I just refilled my prescription (have to get it at the compounding pharmacy and it is not covered at all by insurance) I have 28 left, so I will go off it at 13W1D.
  • At end of first tri as well, thats when the placenta takes over w/ progesterone. My midwives also said it needs to be a gradual reduction in progesterone so that it doesnt shock your system.
  • @tsa08 my doctor wants me to stay on them until 11 weeks.  By 10 weeks the placenta should have taken over so they just add on extra week just to be safe.

  • Mine were only till 8 weeks.
  • Taking mine until 12-13 weeks I believe!! I must say this time around has been less messy! In the morning I put it in about 2 hrs before I have to get up and I have minimal leakage 😆
  • What is the low end of normal?
  • What is the low end of normal?
It depends on when you are having your levels tested. But mine was a little above 6, 7 days past ovulation. A healthier level at that point is above 10.

Could you update your screen name so that we can get to know you from post to post? The directions are in a pinned post.
  • Today is the first day I am starting to be weened off of my progesterone.  I was taking 200 mg twice a day and now its every other day for a week.  I am 11 weeks and 1 day and I am super nervous about spotting. However, if I do spot by my OB and my fertility dr. let me know I could come right in to do an ultrasound.

Has anyone had any spotting when being taken off their progesterone
  • I am taking progesterone at night and morning 100mg and it is because my levels were border line low! I have had two us already they don’t seem promising but I am hoping they are first one baby heart rate was a little low second heart rate was great but baby not growing as much as they like and have a third on Monday! We will see fingers crossed
  • @mom2b77373 I'm also on 200mg 2× daily. I'm 11+0 today and I'm to stay on them until 12 weeks. My specialist told me to just quit cold turkey at 12 weeks. No weaning. She said there should not be any side effects. I hope you don't spot!
  • I'm 2 days off of my progesterone shots. The doc said I could stop at 10 weeks but I went to 10w5d. I'm still nervous, it feels like I'm taking the training wheels off! So far so good though...

  • @Panaceia I have not had any spotting so far. I think I’ve had more side effects from being on the estrogen than the progesterone. And by side effect I just mean I feel way more emotional lol. Hopefully u do not see any spotting as well.
  • I have brown discharge & blood clot in my unteros. So I got a prescription of 2x 200 mg suppository progesterone every day.
im starting tonight so I have no experience of how it would feel.
    i keep everyone posted
  • I’m so tired of taking these. It’s been 5 weeks and all I want is my sleep back instead of feeling like I’m peeing myself with every little movement. Tapering was supposed to begin at the end of next week but I’m going to see if I can move it up to my 10week marker on Friday.
  • Tomorrow is my last day taking them as I get to stop at 12 weeks. Yay! I'm just going to double check with my OB tomorrow but I'm pretty sure that will be it:)
  • Congrats @Panaceia !!

I tried to get out of taking mine after 10w but my midwife told me that starting at 10w I can get away with dropping a day if I really need the sleep  but to wait until 11w to start phasing them out with every other day.
  • @panaceia that is awesome! My appointment is on Thursday to figure out my schedule 😁
