Hypothyroidism and 8 weeks pregnant

I’m 8 weeks and have had thyroid issues for a couple years now. I’m on meds and obviously they need to be increased. Has anyone had a hypothyroid in early pregnancy and everything turned out to be fine? It makes me nervous. I have an apt Thursday with my endo. I had and ultrasound and labs and everything is great. Just nervous about miscarriage and birth defects.

  • @knottie477d33c231cfb109 I've had a friend carry two successful pregnancies with her thyroid removed, so I imagine that things can easily go smoothly. When you're ready, you should join us over at the July 2019 BMB (https://forums.thebump.com/categories/july-2019-moms) and you can also update your screen name at The Knot (then log out/in at the bump to update) or on the Bump App :) Congrats!

  • I have hypo as well and I had no issues. Obviously you just want to make sure they check it and that they check it often as well.
    Congrats!!

Heck, I know someone who had surgery WHILE she was pregnant to have hers removed! Yes, this was a looong time ago (55+ years). They'd never do that today!
  • Lurking and wanted to comment on this. First congrats!!!!!
I had thyroid cancer and all of my thyroid removed plus some surrounding lymph nodes. In my previous pregnancy and during this one (currently 9 weeks), the most important thing my endocrinologist told me was to get my levels checked every 4 to 6 weeks. Being diligent with that would allow him to adjust my meds adequately throughout the pregnancy (which he did due to normal weight gain) to keep the baby and myself healthy and to ensure my TSH levels stayed in an appropriate range. The other thing he was adamant on was ensuring my obgyn received the test results on every level check so they knew what was going on for a collaborative care approach. My best advice is to get those levels frequently checked, take your medication as prescribed if you’re given any and let your doctors know if you feel “off” so they can repeat bloodwork sooner if needed. Good luck at your appointment!
  • This is this is so reassuring!!! My endo I didn’t like him. He told me woes case senerios today. Like no limbs and cerebral palsy. I was like 😳. I’m on meds they just needed to be upped. He also said the damage occurs between 1-6 weeks witch I’m past. I’m getting a second opinion. I have never herd those things before. I’m completely healthy otherwise. It really freaked me out.
  • I had my thyroid irradiated a decade ago and have two perfectly healthy sons now. Make sure you get your levels tested frequently and you should be fine.
