Babymoons

Are you planning on taking one? Zika is still ruling out a lot of places I've noticed!

We have a South American trip already planned and paid for in January but probably nixing that now  My husband and I love off-the-beaten path travel and we are a bit of adrenaline junkies, but I am just wanting something easy and relaxing and safe at this point. But being a Texan living in Michigan, I need to gtfo in January or February or I will lose my mind!

Re: Babymoons

  • MH encouraged me to take one solo since we have a 4yo. I might just do something early in the pregnancy to visit friends somewhere  and then do a nice family trip to the mountains closer to due date.

We got married in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the world.

  • @tsa208 that must have been such a cool wedding!
  • We already have trips on the books already for Park City in January, London in March, and Montana in May, so we’ll call one of these a baby moon! MH and I love to travel, so with pediatrician’s blessing, we plan to travel with LO as soon as possible.
  • We were suppose to do a family trip to Peurto Rico in June, thankfully the tickets hadn’t been bought yet.
  • We’re trying to decide where to go for our babymoon. Tax busy season starts end of January through April 15th, so it’ll have to be after than when I’m very pregnant, unfortunately.
  • DH and I were just discussing this yesterday in terms of whether we could afford it and where we would choose to go. Best time would be sometime in Feb-April while I'm second tri and not too big yet. I love the idea of going somewhere warm as winter gets me down. Not sure if Zika is still an issue down in Florida. DH said Hawaii but I feel like that's just too far for me to be comfortable (and also pricey since we live on the east coast).
  • Doubtful.  I found out I was pregnant just over a week before we were scheduled to fly out for a week of cycling in Italy.  I was sick and throwing up the. whole. time. and was most unhappy that I couldn't enjoy all of the wine (even though at the time, the thought of wine was pretty repulsive anyway).  So I'm not sure I'm enthusiastic about spending more money on pregnancy travel.
  • @foodislove Florida is Zika free and a good option. Most of the Carribbean has Zika, except for a few islands like the Bahamas or Grand Cayman. Both outside of my budget.

  • @tsa208 That's great to know, thanks. I was pregnant with our first during the height of the Zika issues in 2016, and DH actually had to get pulled off a project that had him traveling to El Salvador a lot because we didn't want to risk him bringing it back either.
  • My very generous friend is flying me out to Washington state in January and paying for everything. She’s in the olympics so luckily her travel points will cover the tickets. I’m so excited to get away from my kids & husband at this point. Just hoping my morning sickness goes away by then!
  • I like this idea of taking some time for yourself before the baby is born.

  • We combined my 30th birthday with a babymoon when I was pregnant with our first and went to NYC in July at about 20 weeks. We had a wonderful time, but all of the walking nearly did me in! I had some MAJOR swelling in my legs/feet, but no other issues.

This is my second kid and we took a true babymoon the first time to Europe. I was 22 weeks when we left, 24 when we came back. I was fine at the beginning but I swear I could hardly walk towards the end. Maybe 10 mins at a time at the most. Crazy swelling!

We want to take a trip this time because our daughter is 12 months old and I think once we have two under 2, travel will be *really* hard until they get to be a few years older. So it will be our last big trip for quite a while.

  • With our first child we went to Tucson AZ and had fun. Didn’t have to worry about Zika and had fun. It was during the second trimester which I think was the best time to travel. I don’t think we’ll go anywhere this time.
  • @foodislove Hawaii is Zika free. DH & I already have a trip planned there to visit my parents (they live on the Big Island) in February. Should be in my 2nd trimester & as long as I have Dr clearance that will probably be our baby moon too. Will be the only time I see them while pregnant so I hope it doesn’t have to be canceled. Haven’t told them yet either!! Will tell them at the end of this month 😊💕
  • We are going to Mexico in January. We booked it before we knew I was pregnant and meeting friends there. I’m not worried about Zika. The resort has taken precautions to control mosquitoes and I will wear big spray. I’m looking forward to having a real vacation before what will probably be at least a year of no travel.

Yeah I wouldn't worry on a resort near the ocean - mosquitos don't travel far and the ocean breeze keeps them away. It is tough because the Zika warnings are not very specific. Any Zika in any region and the whole country is marked as unsafe. It would be like avoiding NYC because they found Zika in Miami. My trip included Brazil, which is like ground zero for Zika (and a number of other mosquito-borne diseases that I now can't get vaccinated against), so I am nixing it.

  • @tsa208 I’m also in Michigan and we are planning on doing a babymoon again likely in late February. Need a break from these darn winters that just seem to keep getting longer and longer.  :s  We haven’t figured out where yet but likely either the Bahamas, Cayman Islands or Florida.
  • I wish we could go on a babymoon! Or even a trip with the kids to somewhere besides visiting family. That probably won't be happening though... maybe an overnight at Great Wolf Lodge (indoor water park) or something similar that would only be a short trip.
  • So.... literally a week before we found out I was pregnant (birth control baby) we booked our family trip to Jamaica for my cousins wedding 😬   I would be about 25 weeks pregnant, if we cancel
now up until March we just lose our down payment I am at a complete loss because of Zika, I fully plan on discussing with my dr at our appointments in the meantime sweating the $ we will lose
  • You ladies are convincing me I need to quit settling for weekend getaways and just book that trip for Las Vegas. I've never been and I doubt I'll get a chance to go once baby arrives.

Aw that sucks! If you can, book a meeting with a travel medicine specialist. I feel like my OB/GYN would just look at the CDC list and say "Don't go" - he's more concerned with keeping up with the latest on vajajays than on mosquito-borne illnesses  :D whereas a travel medicine specialist (who could also advise on vaccines) may have better information and can talk about the level of risk you are comfortable with.

  • @tsa208 wow, I never knew something like that even existed!! (the travel medicine specialist)
  • @Ashers423, you're situation is similar to mine, and we opted to go. The risk of Zika at an ocean resort is limited. If you were planning a backpacking trip through the jungles of costa rica, I would probably reconsider.   For me, common sense + some bug spray is the way to go.

  • I'm with @hestia14, weekend trips are our go to normally. I'm thinking we'll just stick to the rivers and the lakes that we're used to (bonus points if you get the reference) and save the big trips for later. Grandma and grandpa would love to babysit for two weeks, right?!?
  • We are doing a long weekend getaway in April - DH found a remote cabin in TN that looks absolutely amazing! We are NJ residents NYC commuters so definitely looking forward to a tranquil weekend away just the two of us. Unfortunately, DH has limited days that we will need for the baby so a week away on a beach was out of the question.

  • My sister and parents own a home in Grand Cayman that they use exclusively for airbnb rentals.  I may take over the house for a week.
  • @gbud630 where in NJ are you?  We are in Scotch Plains, but I work in Trenton.

  • Hi @ketomommy ! We are more central in Monroe Township - new to NJ, but we are absolutely loving it! Oh man, a week in Grand Cayman sounds heavenly, you better commandeer that rental

  • @hestia14 Do it! I love Vegas! My MIL lives there, we are going for Christmas, and DH and I love roaming the strip, seeing shows, eating great food while we are there. Let me know if you want any show/food recs.
  • I was in Mexico during my 2nd pregnancy (i was about 10 weeks) so in Jan 2016, right when Zika talk was starting I feel like. I didn’t think twice about not going
I know my cousin has friends and other relatives who are not going to the wedding because they want to conceive within the next few months. I’m just picturing what everyone will say if we chose to go.

Im also starting to overthink being about 26-28 weeks pregnant (depending on what my first us shows)  and something happening while there?? Both of my girls held out to 40 weeks, I’m just being a basket case

My husband was asked to play in a Vegas pool tournament the last week of May.  Of course he wants me to go (for at least a part of it), but I think that sounds insane to be that far along in Vegas.  Plus, I am a teacher and taking off basically one week before school ends is probably not the best time.  He is going to be gone for almost two weeks!   I am not sure how I feel about the whole thing.  I got pretty annoyed the first time he brought it up.
  • @xtinecatherine I know every relationship is different, but geezzzz that would annoy the crap out of me!!! 2 weeks?? Stop it! I'm not sure I could be on board with that....
  • @foodislove Thanks! I might take you up on that! Now the hard part of convincing DH :unamused: I think his discomfort with traveling is that it's expensive and he's not used to it.
  • this is our third, and we don’t have a lot to spend on a babymoon or any vacation this year (too many house projects, things to pay off, etc). we’re talking about just a weekend away, somewhere close by, the hole up in a hotel for a few days, get a massage, etc. it actually sounds amazing and something we’ve really never done since having kids!! sad, but true.
  • Ugh. We really shouldn’t be spending the money or taking the vacation days, but I can’t quit dreaming about Hawaii or maybe just a long San Diego weekend in February.
  • We were tentatively planning Hawaii for my birthday in June but now I’ll be too far along to fly by then. Wondering if we should move the trip earlier and make it a babymoon or just postpone it until after baby. Probably will postpone it.
  • I’m scheduled to go to NOLA for a weekend in March for work, so hubby was already planning to come with me to make it a little getaway. Admittedly, it’s going to be a little weird not being able to drink (barhopping is one of my favorite activities there lol), but I’m really looking forward to it, nonetheless.
