Mucinex: Yes or no?

So my nightmare bronchitis has returned. I am desperate for relief. Giant, green, thick snotballs form in my lungs and it takes 10-15 seconds of hard coughing to get them up. Then the wad comes out my throat and triggers my gag reflex, causing me to dry heave for 5-10 minutes. Literally. Sitting at the toilet crying and screaming while my throat and stomach contract involuntarily into a hellish torrent of pain that I can't stop.
My question: Now that I'm 14 weeks (2nd trimester) would it be safe to take Mucinex? Dr. Google had mixed advice so I'm coming to you ladies for help.

Re: Mucinex: Yes or no?

  • I voted call your OB. I will add that I did find out this time around that they are now saying pseudoephedrine is ok once you're in the second tri, which was a big relief to me in my sinus infection a couple weeks ago. IDK if it would be helpful for you, as it's a nasal decongestant primarily, but just throwing it out there!

  • Iโ€™d check with your doctor. ย Mucinex is only recently available in Canada so I can honestly say that I have never used the product, pregnant or not. ย As such, I have also never received any information from my doctor on this particular drug. ย My top google result (from healthline) says itโ€™s safe in second and third trimesters, so Iโ€™d say probably yes but if it was me Iโ€™d check first

  • @wishiwaspreggo Does mucinex help for nasal congestion too? My cold settled in my nose and last week I was blowing my nose 6-7 times an hour and grossing all my coworkers out to the point where they sent me home and made me WFH all week (score). All i have been taking was benedryl at night, so it would be good to have a back up for the day time.ย
  • @chloe97 DH gets allergies so he takes mucinex-D for that (I believe mucinex-D is not pregnancy safe but Mucinex is...my doc has a list she gives at the first appointment but I'm not looking at it so don't quote me). When he gets a cold once every few years, he takes the mucinex still since it's on hand. It thins out your mucus so you don't get stuffed up as much. They actually say when you're TTC that it can help your CM be more "sperm-friendly" since all the mucus becomes thinner (tmi?). Anyways, I've never tried it but that's what I've heard.

  • Internet says yes but I like to clear all medications with my OB, regardless of who else tells me they are safe.

I posted this before, and not sure if it's helpful or not, but many common cough syrups are ok according to my practice. This is from their "so you found out you're knocked up" welcome pack.ย

  • My OB has okโ€™d it just make sure itโ€™s plain Mucinex. ย No DM!!
  • @knarlytaurus I can't help but wonder what defects people think water beds cause (bottom of the page) ๐Ÿค”

@knarlytaurus yea now I'm curious on a bunch of those. I use mineral sunscreen when pregnant and BFing. I actually hate it because I am over the top about sunscreen and it creates a film that gets itchy if I'm using it frequently (like on our Hawaii trip).

  • I've always heard DM is a no-no! I avoid it anyway because suppressing your cough will not do anything to help you get better. You gotta clear that crud out of you, and that means drinking tons of fluids and taking Mucinex to thin it out so it comes out easily. I sleep like the dead anyway thanks to pregnancy so I don't need a cough suppressant ATM. But if you need it to survive a week-long cold at night to help you sleep, I say go for it. As long as you're not abusing cough syrup or something weird.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds improper support for your body? Idk!

  • One of my coworkers told me last week I shouldnโ€™t stand in front of the microwave while I was warming up my lunch. ย Maybe I should show this to her ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • Update: Mucinex works miracles! I took it last night before bed to prevent the thick snot balls and it worked like a charm. No green globs, no triggered gag reflex, no screaming, no tears :) with any luck Iโ€™ll be feeling good enough to work tomorrow.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds @kvh22 @mrskoz428 I never really noticed that! Maybe the baby would get seasick?ย
  • I was too curious and looked it up. Apparently they're heated? So the concern is overheating:

  • @knarlytaurus huh. Interesting. Man, I had a friend in high school who had a waterbed. I really wish I had one. It was so comfortable. Though, I'm trying to picture sleeping in one with my 250lb husband, 5 year old kid and my dog and that picture is way less comfortable ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds lol! My first boyfriend had one, but they were really hard to get out of!
