Diclegis opinions

Back story, both of my previous pregnancies have resulted in severe morning sickness or hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). I was on a mixture of Zofran, Reglan, and Phengran (sorry about spelling) to even keep down food. They didn’t help with nausea at all.

Now, when I mentioned to my OB how bad my nausea already is at 6 weeks and I’ve been fighting it since week 3, they decided to put me on dicgleis. Has anyone tried this? It’s not working for crap and I’m on day three. I’ve read mixed reviews. I haven’t ate a real meal in weeks and I’m starving! Even the thought of food makes me sick. Please tell me this takes a bit to kick in. I really don’t want to go back to Phenegran Suppositories.

Re: Diclegis opinions

  • Hey dude, there is a whole thread dedicated to symptoms. This would fit there perfectly. Also please read the pinned organization thread!

  • I don't have any problem with you starting a thread on this. I am sure there are moms that don't read the symptoms thread every time they have a question about a medication. I have used diclegis, as did my sister who had HG. I had the most luck when I took it in the evening. Then it has time to get in your system for the following day. When are you taking it?  It will definitely make you constipated, so make sure you are adding a mild stool softener.

  • @ameliabedelia-2 That’s why I didn’t post in there because I just wanted opinions on this medicine in particular. My OB told me they no longer prescribe anything else for morning sickness so maybe this will help for someone else in the same situation.

I have been taking it at night, two pills. It helps a little but nothing like I feel it should. And thanks for the tip on constipation! I had no idea and that explains a lot.
  • @mizzmeg, keep on it! I do remember it taking a few days to really manage things. Good luck, this stage definitely blows big time.

I’ve been taking unisom and B6 for a week, and I’ve noticed some improvement. I’m waiting to pickup my Diclegis prescription and hope that it works better! I will say, I don’t feel completely better but the unisom (same active ingredient) has helped me to function enough to go to work. I’m still gagging, dry heaving, and nauseous at times, but it’s a little less sucky!

My OB said you could take it up to four pills per day. Have you tried that?
  • Does unisom make you extremely tired??
  • @rgn12 they gave me samples so definitely not enough to do 4 a day! I will ask for a full script and see about 4 a day. Thank you.

  • Yes, it is the same active ingredient, but Diclegis is specifically formulated for MS and is also delayed released so it should last longer. I haven’t actually picked mine up yet, and have just been doing the OTC thing.

@bartonolivia it did make me extremely tired in the mornings at first, but I think I’ve adjusted since taking it for a week. I’ve also been really tired in general, so it’s kind of hard to distinguish...  However, last night it didn’t work (or either the banana I ate messed with my stomach) and I was up all night. Ugh!
  • @rgn12 I took unisom for the first time last night and I was up all night! So weird. My nasuea was settled and yesterday was the first day ive only thrown up once, compared to throwing up 10+ times a day I’d say that’s an accomplishment.
  • @bartonolivia oh yes, definitely an accomplishment. Yesterday I was feeling super irritable and on edge, so I’m thinking that my hormones are out of whack or there was a surge of something and maybe that’s why. I’m praying I can get this under control, I can’t afford to keep missing work (today is day 2).
  • My insurance wouldn't cover Diclegis, so I take 25mg Unisom tab at night (along with a prenatal that has 10mg B6). Then I'll take half a 100mg b6 tablet in the morning.
B6 by itself seemed useless, but adding Unisom helped a ton.
  • So my rx was sent in Monday evening and my insurance is still “processing” it. I have a feeling it’s going to be rejected. What is wrong with these insurance companies??? 🤬
  • Glad this was brought up. I’m trying the Unisom B6 today, along with every other home remedy trying to avoid Rx
  • I’m glad this didn’t get buried in the symptoms thread. I don’t even read that one. It’s too broad when I come and skim.

I took diclegis four times a day (combined with Zofran) with my first. I can’t say it helped with my nausea much. But that combo did help so I could keep down some bland food and I would only throw up once or twice a day. So, it was decent.

  • @rgn12 if your insurance doesn’t cover it go to www.dickegis.com and as long as you have private insurance you can get a great coupon. For those that don’t have insurance at all they have a different coupon.
