I am thinking my color theme is going to be grey and pink since those are my favorite colors, and not so extremely girly. Was gonna go with a cloud theme, but then i switched to elephants to honor my Grandmother. She passed in September and elephants were her absolute favorite thing, plus my sister is a Delta and thats the sorority animal so she is way inclined to pitch in with decorations LOL. Found some gray cribs and zero-ing in on which one i want. I have seen a lot of elephant decor on the home decorating websites, like Home Goods and Michaels, so i will probably take advantage of sales over the next few months on that, and Target has a lot of elephant/gray/pink stuff that I have put on our registry.
@zionsmama85 elephants is a great theme! There are so many options for decorations!
Before finding out the sex, DH and I had already decided on a rainforest theme for LO's nursery. Colors will be dark brown and shades of green. We have a dark brown crib and brown curtains like tree trunks and I know LO will get an abundance of stuffed animals as gifts but between DH and I from our childhood collections, we have tiger, leopard, scarlet macaw, and multiple monkey stuffed animals. DH and I are also big plant people so we will also probably have shelves of plants in the room.
For DD1 we did a casual music theme, mostly because we wanted to put up all the band posters we have. 2 of the concerts she attended in utero; Bob Dylan and Jamestown Revival, as well as Toots and the Maytals but we didn't get a poster at that one. Colors were grey, teal, black and white.
For this one we won't paint or anything. Mostly I'm moving her crib into the nook in our bedroom. I got a silvery foot stool/pouf I need to finish stuffing with spare towels or something. We'll be moving a few months later, so there's not much point in decorating it now. Depending on our bedroom situation in our next home, we'll probably either have the girls share a room or have a little nursery.

So, we have two bedrooms on the second floor and two on the first floor. I don’t want to be on a separate from my my kids yet, so we won’t be making a separate space. She’ll sleep in our room for the first year and we’ll keep her clothes in my son’s room for now.
We plan on renovating a room downstairs a year after she’s born into our new master and giving her our bedroom.
We are just recycling DD's room and she is moving to the bedroom we used for an office previously. The room has very light pink walls and one darker pink accent wall. I put teal accents in there for decor but will be changing those out for purple this time. Our crib is a mocha color with matching changing table/dresser. With DD my "theme" was kind of fairytale-like and I painted a Cinderella quote on canvas for over her crib/bed. I plan to do the same with DD2, just haven't picked a quote yet. DD is now into unicorns and butterflies...so I'm more focused on her new room that needs to be finished soon!
Lo will be in our room. Its up in the air whether we'll be staying here or moving when our lease is up and lo will only be 3 months. The dresser/ changer combo is in our room and the recliner for nursing in our office. We'll see what happens come closer to that time. Depends on DW's job.
The previous owners of our house had a baby, so LO’s room already has 3 light gray walls and an accent wall that is dark gray, light gray, and white striped. I think we will accent with navy blue and have some touches of rustic wood. I really like some of the nursery decor that has mountains or quotes about adventure. We both love to travel so those little references seem appropriate. 🙂
Those of you looking for nursery decor don’t forget to check Hobby Lobby they have some cute things for nursery in lots of different themes.
For DS we did a grey, white, and yellow theme with some animals. The main feature was his name on the wall above his crib with different colors and shape letters. We also have a giraffe stuffed head on the wall and an elephant decal. I love his room.
This is one will be in our room most of the time. We are working on converting half of the office into his “room”. Mainly we are just going to move the rocker in there, we have a dresser with a changing table, we’ll get a hamper, and we have a bookcase in there. Other than that we aren’t doing much. We plan to get a sign or 2 for his wall.
We are also looking to move within 6 months of this LO being born. So hopefully after we find our more long term house we will get this one all set up with his own space/room.
We’re basically recycling DS nursery. We moved him into his big boy room about a year ago and left the nursery pretty much untouched. We didn’t really do a theme for DS. The room was navy and white with gray and light blue accents, two pictures with sweet elephants and book quotes. The nursery has light blue walls (which DH has already declined to repaint 🙄), navy and cream black out curtains, cream rocker and dark wood crib, dresser, and book shelf. Since this lo is a girl I’m planning to do coral and navy so it will tie in to what is already there. My sister handed down some coral changing pad covers she had made for my first niece. But I still need to find bedding I can get DH on board with, a hamper, and new pictures for her wall.
We are doing a navy and green nursery with some gray accents (hoping to get some gray furniture). It will be a dinosaur theme and we'll be getting a lot of items from Hobby Lobby. We have bought ZERO items so far lol
@mayoduck I think we already talked about this but we picked a very similar theme. Woodland with dark brown furniture and green accents to look like trees. We have grey toned wood floors and painted the walls tan. We have it painted and the furniture and curtains up and we love it. We bought a light green rug and are really loving the color. We decided to add a few light pink accents now that it’s a boy/girl nursery and it worked out great... we should have pictures soon!

We are doing grey, white and blush. I've already made a mini flower wall type deal for above the crib, now just waiting on her name sign to come in so can paint and add to it. MH is obsessed with Elephants, so we have a couple of those floating around as well. I agree, Hobby Lobby had some great finds! I was able to find an elephant picture that wasn't too baby looking that she can have for a long time and some cute cloud shelves for books, etc.

We’re doing sky blue, white, and grey. I ordered some reusable construction/road work decals for his walls and am scouting for a short bookcase and glider we like. DH was obsessed with equipment when he was little and we thought this would transition really well from infant through toddlerhood, when he can have a say in what his room looks like.
@blueberry0326 I have a DaVinci Glider that I got from Target. The store I went to had a few of them on display that I was able to sit in and try. I like it because it's multidirectional, so I can turn it to face whichever direction without struggling with it. It also reclines, which has come in handy a couple times when dealing with a sick baby in the middle of the night. It doesn't really rock when it's reclined though, so this time around I found a foot stool to go with it, even though it has a foot rest that pops out when reclined. It's nice to sit and rock while comfortably nursing. With DD1 I would just prop my legs up on her toy box.
DD1: June '16 DD2: March ‘19 :::: Married since 2011 :::: USN Wife ::::
@blueberry0326 you’ll likely spend a decent bit of time in your nursery chair, especially if you’re nursing, so I’d highly recommend going and sitting in whatever chair you’re considering. We got a Pottery Barn rocker and footstool for DS. It’s really comfortable and has held up really well (3 years of regular use before he moved to his big boy room). However, unlike a glider it takes a little more effort on your part to rock, especially if you have carpet. Definitely an area of the nursery to research a bit and try to test out the chair in person. Thin cushions or a chair that isn’t comfortable for you and your SO will literally be a pain the butt!
@blueberry0326 We have a Dutailer (sp?) glider and ottoman, and it was the best investment we've made! Yes, it was pricey, but I spent countless hours in it day and night nursing our son or holding him during naps. It's still in great shape so we'll move it to the new nursery (we've been using it for bedtime stories). Totally recommend! And I'm usually the cheap one in our house, and bought all the big ticket items used (we didn't even have a registry since we had no family or friends nearby), apart from the glider! It's a long term investment and you'll use it even after the kids are grown.
I just finished the first coat of paint in the nursery!! A pale yellow called lemon frost (planning second coat today) and I want to do a blue/green mural on one wall (planning to get paint in blue, white and black and mix my own colors, but I'm not sure if I want to mix in the base yellow for green layers, or just leave it in blues... Any suggestions? I was an art major and I enjoy mixing paints and colors but I want it to look nice and not overwhelming).
We picked out furniture but don't have it yet, the crib and changing table/dresser thing are white. Not sure if we want to get a smaller white book shelf or do those cute attached to the wall things I have seen on pintrest - - probably the bookshelf because it will last longer. My husband and dad are making me a glider out of Doug fir (it's really pretty, but I have doubts about them finishing in time because my dad is also working on rebuilding his deck!)
I registered for white light blocking curtains with dinosaurs on it, and my friend sent me a DIY hanging mobile with grey/yellow/white animals (it's a monkey, elephant and Hippo, I think). I'd like to do a floating shelf with a plant on it, preferably one that is hard to kill - - any suggestions?
It all looks so cute in my mind, I can't wait until it starts to come together more!
@abbykwail Not the prettiest plant but snake plants (aka mother-in-law's tongue) actually do best when somewhat neglected. They are also on NASA's list of air purifying plants and they produce more oxygen at night than during the day, making them a great bedroom plant. It can be toxic if eaten but as long as the shelf you have it on isn't within reach of baby or any pets, should be fine.
Our nursery for our daughter was painted an aqua/turquoise color as we didn't know if we were expecting a boy or girl. We decorated with some watercolors of her initials, and some sheers with grey embroidery, but that's about it. We will be moving her into our guestroom, so we will be painting and decorating the guestroom. The nursery we will change out the grey embroidered sheers with navy curtains. I don't have the most creative decorating juices, but I'm trying. I would love to get our daughter's room with the bottom three colors of this palette (spoiler because huge) with wainscoting. But I'll probably have to pump the brakes on that, especially since our master is a, sorry for the rhyme, disaster.
I am thinking we will have to get a new crib, especially since my mom just texted me and said our daughter climbed out of the pack and play they use at their house for nap time. She hasn't yet climbed out of her crib, so I am thinking that can go with her to the guestroom. I'm trying to keep my eyes open for crib deals, and will look at local Goodwills, etc. We got a steal with my daughter's crib; a couple separated, then reconciled, and they were selling brand new items cheeeeeeeap. The crib was $75, selling for $375-$425 at the local Babies R Us.
My parents wanted to gift us with a great rocker, so we shopped around. We have a La-Z-Boy swivel/rocker/glider that I love. I use it every night to rock our daughter even if it's just a minute or two. It's a smaller rocker that allows for rocking and reclining, or using the lever to recline and prop. I'm thinking of moving it to a "neutral zone" so that our daughter doesn't think the baby "stole" it from her. I am planning on squishing it in our room somehow.
I second a snake plant. We have a couple that I regularly forget to water for months on end and neither of them has died or dried up yet. And they don't need much light.
DD1: June '16 DD2: March ‘19 :::: Married since 2011 :::: USN Wife ::::
DD's room/nursery is classically girlie, with a floral accent wall, blush pink walls, and green accents around the room. We got a really comfortable green glider/ottoman combo that is so nice! We skipped the changing table since her room is pretty small. We also skipped a dresser, and made some storage drawers in her closet with an IKEA Kallax. DH put the same wallpaper from the accent wall on the back of the Kallax, too, so it also had a decorative function.
We have one bedroom in our house left to use, and it's the larger of the two regular bedrooms.Ideally, we would like the two kids to share a room for awhile in a couple of years to give them companionship and a centralized location for the toys.
Right now, we are thinking a very subtle Harry Potter room with gray walls, lots of black and white, and geometric Harry Potter art (Hallows, wands, etc.). The crib will go in there once DD is done with it and we make the switch to a toddler bed. DS will probably bunk in our room with us in a pack and play for most of the first year like his sister did. I refused to buy another crib!
I third the snake plant. I have one that i do neglect LOL. forgetful plant mom, and it is still thriving and growing. I like the idea of putting them in the room so i may get some more. They are beautiful and sturdy, and i found a pretty small one at Trader Joes surprisingly.
Maybe this isn't the best advice because I'm sure everyone wants to be set up in advance, but my advice would be to not spend tons of money until after the baby is born.
My mom swore by a glider rocker. She loved it so much, and that's where she'd sit to nurse. I was given a second hand one, and I don't use it much. Sometimes to rock my baby in, but less than once a day. I don't like nursing in anything with arms. I feel restricted and worry about honking their head. Arms just aren't the right height (too high) to have the arm under their head on. I sit on the couch with the foot that's on the side they're nursing on on the couch, so my thigh helps support their head.
So I'd say try to find something with very low arms and/or a very wide seat. Or wait if possible.
@swanbrooner I would love a thread where we shared pictures of our nurseries or pictures of decor ideas! HGTV is my jam, so I love all things home decorating. 😆
@lovesclimbing one thing about the glider arms: the model I have has very thick padded arms (with pockets outside!!!). They are too soft to cause any harm if the baby's head touches them. But I definitely advise to try them all before settling on one. And have DH try them as well - mine also spent time in the glider holding our sleeping son. I've seen many brands and models at Buy Buy Baby (ours was from BRU, I miss that store so much!).
We skipped the glider and got a futon and are just planning on lots of pillows and footstools. My husband cannot comfortably sit in most of the chairs and with twins, it didn’t seem practical anyway. Since we aren’t planning on sleeping the twins in our room at all, I felt like a futon was more important so one of us can crash in their as needed.

I'm sure that would help! Mine just has wooden arms. But even if it did have padded arms, it's not a comfortable position to be in for me. The arms on any chair, including the padded ones on our couch, just aren't the right height for me, and I'm pretty average height. But that's personal preference, of course.
We will not have a nursery. Our house is tiny and my husband will be using the second "bedroom" for his office since he works from home and will need somewhere to work besides the living room once the baby is born. We plan on having the crib in our bedroom and we have a rocking chair in the living room. I might add a decoration on the wall above the crib, but we aren't planning on any theme for the bedding. Honestly, I'm hoping we purchase as many second hand items as we can and avoid buying any unnecessary things.
Bumping to ask for dresser recommendations. So many kids dressers (that aren’t super expensive) are particle boardish and those have never held up that great for more than a few years. Do any of you have a great dresser you like that wasn’t really expensive?
@catlady2015 We ended up with one from Westwood. I like it because 1) it's a double dresser so fits a lot 2) it has soft close drawers so not as worried about LO slamming her fingers in it when she's little. You can find the brand at Buy Buy Baby. We ended up finding the dresser itself in clearance at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Didn't seem to have anything wrong with it besides a drawer that needed to be tightened. So def look out for deals! Buy Buy Baby will also let you use their 20% off coupon

We are doing light green walls, white furniture, and gray accents. I am debating the wall decor but thinking animals, either jungle or forest. We inherited a jungle themed mobile, which I kind of like right now.
I love this thread! We will not be making a nursery for this little guy, as the two bedrooms in our apartment are already spoken for, but we are buying a house and will be moving shortly after he is born, so I am soaking up all the ideas for his room once we get there!
@maggiemadeit is buying a house a new development? I didn’t realize that you were in the process of buying, Congrats! We did that last time as we moved from a 2bedroom to a 4bed when DD1 was 2 months old. It was kind of nice to be able to think on how I actually wanted her room to function, instead of how I thought I needed it to function. We’re kind of doing the same thing now and DDs will likely share a room after we move this summer, sleeping habits depending.

@meggyme Thanks! Yes! We just signed the purchase agreement yesterday, but the owner won’t be done with the last renovations until April. So we will be moving when this little guy is a month or two old. Any tips for moving with a new baby?
