Inconclusive blood test for Down Syndrome

Hi. My name is Heather. I am 20 weeks,1 day pregnant with my baby boy. I had the quad screen done a while back and it showed a positive screen for down syndrome. My odds were 1-69. I then went to have a level 2 ultrasound done last Friday that showed echogenic bowels and cyst on the brain but from my understanding, this can also happen to normal babies. I then was told they weren't for sure so they wanted me to have more blood drawn to know for sure....well,the results came back today and she said there wasn't enough DNA in my baby's blood to confirm anything and that doesn't mean anything to her the first time but if it happens again, then she said the baby more than likely does have down syndrome. She said getting an inconclusive result isn't common but it's not unheard of. Has anyone had this happen and end up having a healthy baby? I'm just a mess right now. Thank you all.

Re: Inconclusive blood test for Down Syndrome

  • With my second, she did have a cyst on her brain at 20 weeks. She was perfectly healthy as a newborn and is now a very bright 12 year old. I can’t speak to the other results, but hang in there. The scariest part is the not knowing and letting your mind go to all the possibility scenarios. Now that I’ve been a mom for 14 years, I will say they all come with certain issues. Sometimes you find out right away, sometimes years later, and sometimes you worry for no reason. Just wait for the next round of results and take it from there. You’ve got this.

  • No similar experience, just hope you can rest in the unknown of the next few months and grow your little person. It happens occasionally that the fetal diagnosis are wrong and they are also right much of the time. Build your support and lean in. <3

  • Sending you lots of love. My nephew was born with Down syndrome 5 years ago and he is a sweet loveable funny little dude. I know it must be so difficult right now and I can’t really understand what you are feeling, but we are all here to support you on whatever ways you need!
