Silly Vent... Called "Worst Parent Ever"

I totally know it's a joke, especially considering the source, but I posted on FB that I just can't bring myself to let Faith watch Sesame Street (I TRIED today!!). She said "You are the worst parent ever". (and coming from someone who doesn't have kids herself makes me feel like she stepped over a line)

I must be overly sensitive today because that reply has me near tears.

*deep breathing*

Re: Silly Vent... Called "Worst Parent Ever"

  • Wow. That's a little harsh, but considering the source, are you surprised?
  • Loading the player...
  • I'd probably chalk it up to one of those jokes that doesn't come across well in type, ya know like how you can't read emotion through emails.  I'm sure she was trying to be funny.

  • Aw, I'm sorry she hurt your feelings.  I'm sure that was not the intent at all and she thought she was just being funny.  {{{HUGS}}}

You might be a little over sensitive but then this is coming from the chick sent into tears over her friend saying J had a bowl cut so... take that w/a grain of salt.  ;)

Good thing I didn't reply because I just saw that and was going to give you a bad time too. Do you have on demand? Ryan loves Little Einsteins and is starting to pick up following a pattern and beat from watching it.

We watch On Demand all the time. I much prefer toys/characters that aren't so heavily marketed. I stay away from Dora/Diego, Sesame Street (mainly Elmo. I don't mind the rest of them!), and Disney princesses for now. I feel like once that ell is rung, you can't unring it! And that's a whole lot of Gimmie Gimmies at stores to deal with.

Should I reply to her and DD her post? I wanted to say something like :

"wow. Thanks for that. Just so you know, no one ever likes being called the worst parent ever, no matter the context or attempt at a joke. "

  • imageMrsJulieT:
Katie fwiw I totally took it as a joke when I read it.

thanks. and thanks for not replying to the status in a similar manner. :)

I let Zayden watch the Noggin channel because of that same reason, but you know as she grows up it will be harder to keep her away from all the marketed characters! But I see how/why you are trying to keep her away for now!

I don't think you should reply to her. Just DD it and don't you think she would "get it" if you did that?

OMG sol! Sorry I kind of LOL'd at when you wrote this, because Z's hairdo always goes into a "bowl cut style" at the end of the day because it gets too long and hangs down...im always swiping his hair to the side so it doesn't look like that! I'm sorry she made you cry though! biotch!

  • I know it's a losing battle, but as long as I can put it off, I am going to! :) Thomas the Tank is the most marketed thing we have and even that, she only has 2 Thomas books and 1 engine. She thinks all trains are "Thomas", which I like.
  • I'm sorry she hurt your feelings.  :-(  I hate it when people get all judgy judgy about parenting - even when it's a joke.

On a random side note, how can I can't see your status updates???

  • I didn't see it and I am sorry it hurt you!  I would chalk it up as a bad joke and not say anything.  Blame the pregnancy hormones for the tears!

Sheila I couldn't either, so I deleted her as a friend and then asked Katie to send me another friend request.  It works now.

  • Well I don't know who said it but no matter who it comes from, the words "worst parent ever" always strike a chord b/c we're all trying our hardest to do the best we can do and we're all a bit insecure about what we do (well, I am at least). So take a deep breath and let it go. Take it from someone who is still mortified a year later that in her pregnant hormonal state she started a battle with one of her football fantasy league mates over what was intended to be a joke and good-natured ribbing...just let it go.
  • I DDed her original reply and she just re-replied "Sesame Street is EDUCATIONAL", like I am depriving Faith of some cornerstone of her educational career.

She's never even met my kid. How would she know what kind of things would "teach" Faith what she needs to know? I think I have done a darn good job of teaching her, thus far!

  • Another random thought about characters.  Carter never watches any TV at all.  Yet somehow, he has still succumbed to marketing.  My mom had this 80s Mickey Mouse toy at her house that he fell in love with, and now he is obsessed with all things Mickey Mouse.  We were at Costco the other day and they had a huge jug of Winnie the Pooh animal crackers.  The back of the jug had a small Mickey Mouse that he saw and kept pointing to, wanting to hold the jug.  He does the same thing with his Huggies diapers that have the Mickey character on them.

We just got an invitation to a Dora themed birthday party with Dora and Diego on the invite.  Again, he's never seen this show.  Yet he loved the invite and walked around holding it all afternoon, pointing to Dora and Diego the entire time.

I don't get it, but damn, that marketing to kids thing using characters works!

Oh, and don't even get me started on character band aids!

  • (((HUGS))) I also am sure it was meant as a joke, bu still.  :(  I have been known for s'times typing things that are taken wrong, since sarcasm often doesn't come across in writing.  BUT- I also understand the sting you would feel.  I would too.

I also have never been able to see your Status updates.  :(  Should I also delete you and add you again?

On a total side note that I have been meaning to mention- your FIL keeps coming up as my "People You May Know" list.  Funny!  Usually it is nesties or old high school people that show up there.

  • Yeah, her re-reply was annoying, no doubt.  Like a kid can't get a great education w/o TV?!??

yes, I'll DD you and request an add again. It'll fix it. I dunno how that happened.

  • The first one sounds like a joke that didn't come over well and doesn't seem THAT bad....

However... The second one was more annoying than the first like she's trying to sort of 'justify' her first comment.

I think the second one made me more annoyed than the first. heh.

Especially because it made it sound like she knew what was better for my kid than I do. I couldn't help but reply to that one.... The thing is... she's never met Faith and doesn't know what she can and can't do.

    Me too.

  • They must have been joking?!? Seriously! Whoa!?

Nothing could be further from the truth so don't believe her for a second! You're a great mom, ignore her and have some fun with Faith :)
