Calories

I was in the middle of losing weight when I found out I was pregnant. Are any of you tracking calories? If so, how many are you eating a day. I plan on asking my doctor at my first appointment but am curious in the mean time.

I think you only add 300 a day. But I'm new at this!

You typically don’t add calories until the second trimester. I think if you are eating a healthy balanced diet then you can continue with how you were eating before pregnancy even if it means you lose a few pounds, but your ob or midwife can definitely comment on that. I was so nauseated during my 1st tri last pregnancy that I lost 6-7 lbs so a little bit like that shouldn’t be problematic.

I was in the middle of my weight loss journey as well. Just recently lost almost 70 pounds. Everyone says add 300 calories in the second trimester but I’m so used to being in a calorie deficit that I’m not even sure how much to really eat. My first doctors appt is January 9th. But I’m just sticking to what I know for now because I’m terrified of gaining that 70+ pounds back.

I was counting my calories and I think I was having 1900 per day. I don’t think you add anything just yet. I always thought it was okay to lose some weight, especially if you’re having morning sickness.

I don't track calories at all but eat whatever I can manage as there are days when I can't keep anything down. Baby will take what they need from you. Just try to eat healthy and you should fine.

I was also working towards losing weight, and while I'm no longer cutting back my calories (I was on 1200/day), I'm working to stay around 1600 as that's average and I don't want to risk low blood sugar/dizziness/etc., which was a problem for me going into second trimester last time around.

There's losing weight due to morning sickness, which is not too concerning, versus losing weight because you are choosing not to eat enough calories. I'm of the mind that I really do not want to put on the same amount of weight as I did last time, especially since I didn't lose it all, but don't get too worried about it and try to remember that taking care of you and baby and getting those nutrients/vitamins is more important.

With my first I ate 2000 calories a day the entire pregnancy, and that was my normal pre-pregnancy calorie need.  I gained 20 when regnant and lost 50 pounds immediately after giving birth.

i was slightly overweight and doc had no concerns. I nursed for two years.  Listening to body is key, and just keeping the convo with the doc going.  I’ll do the same this pregnancy.

My doc said no additional calories are needed the first trimester, add 250 or so a day the second trimester, and 300-500 a day the last trimester. A lot of moms have morning sickness and lose weight the first trimester and the pregnancy is fine. I myself had terrible nausea the first 14 weeks and didn't want to eat anything!

I am working withe a metabolic specialist and a very baby friendly nutritionist in addition to my OB.  I was told to stick to my 1200-1400 kcal a day, with under 40 net carbs until the second trimester.  In the second trimester we will up it to 80 net carbs and 1400-1500 kcal a day. In the third trimester we will keep the 80 net carbs (or less if I have GD) and around 1700 kcal a day.

I am definitely going to start tracking calories again because I am eating like a horse already. I think I had kept it at 17-1800 calories the first trimester then did 2000ish
