Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Swing, Jumper, and Bouncer?

Do I really need all three of these?  I'm trying to finish up my registry before my shower, and I'm just not sure if we need all of these considering we'll only be using them for a short while with baby.  I really lean towards wanting the bouncer, but I'm kind of on the fence about the swing and the jumper.  We're looking at the FP Rainforest series for all three of these items.  Thanks!

Re: Swing, Jumper, and Bouncer?

  • And exersaucer...

We have A papasan Swing (in MBR) , A FP porta Swing (on 3rd floor-goes with us to friends houses too), 3 bouncers (on ein my Bathroom, one in the Family room and one in the rec room), FP Rainforestjumperoo (will replace bouncer in a few months) and BE exersaucer (will replace the papasan swing in our room) and use ALL of it.

  • yes, yes, and yes.

We use both the swing and the bounce everyday... and when she is old enough, the jumper is the best babysitter ever!  If you were going to eliminate any one item, I would say the bouncer.  Babies tend to outgrow that one the fastest.

  • We got the Graco combination swing/bouncer. Maybe you could try that instead?
  • You definitely don't NEED all three, but it is nice.  The bouncer is nice because you can bring it with you wherever you go to set dc down to get something done.  The swing is nice because it is soothing(although ds didn't like it until 4 wks)  The jumper is nice because it has fun toys, they love to bounce, and can be used as they get older.  I only registered for the swing and jumperoo but someone bought us the bouncer.  I'm so glad they did. I think that one is the most useful for us.  I also have the rainforest for all.  Although our house looks like a baby jungle, I've been really happy with the line.
  • I am still kicking myself for buying the bouncer rather than the swing.  We didn't get the swing till DS was 5 wks and I think I would have gotten a lot more sleep those first five weeks if we'd had the swing.
  • Unfortunately - every baby is different.  Here's my experience, though:

Swing - all of my kids LOVED LOVED LOVED it.

Bouncer - had one for the first and third kids- she hated it, he loved his

Jumper - only had one for this baby - she LOVES it.

  • We have all 3 plus and exersaucer and use them all.  The swing is the only place DD will take decent naps (and she still sleeps in it at night sometimes).  The bouncer is great to put in the kitchen when we are eating or cooking and don't have the hands to hold her.  You could wait a little bit for the jumper and exersaucer until baby is older but you will probably want at least one of them.

  • It doesn't hurt.  Do you need them, no, but you may end up wanting them.  My DD loved her bouncer for the first 3 months, after which she kind of outgrew it.  But it was a lifesaver to have a safe place to put her so I could take a shower or grab lunch and worth every penny even for a few months.  The swing I ended up going out and buying at a consignment store when she was about 4 weeks old because she loved motion and being rocked and carried.  She still loves it, although now she associates it with her nap and will only go in it if she is sleepy.  At about 4 months, the jumperoo and exersaucer started to take the place of the bouncer and the swing.  I'm happy to have all 4, they are good for different stages.

  • We have one of each and they are placed strategically all around the house.

    Swing: Hearth/Kitchen
    Bouncer: Master Bath
Exersaucer: Hearth/Kitchen (when she fits in it)
Jumper: Exercise room downstairs (when she fits in it)

You of course don't have to get them all. Your child may also not like all or may perfer one to the other.

  • I would say yes on all three, but you can wait a bit and see.  We used the swing from day one.  It's the only place DS would sleep the first few weeks and he still takes naps in it.  We've used the exersaucer since he was 3 months, but he's starting to get bored with it now.  I broke down and bought a Bungee Baby last week and am so glad I did.  He cries when I take him out of it!
